First job. Started by: Shini on Apr 08, '17 08:54

Shini stood against the wall. He had noticed that Conall was a little green behind the ears. So he had contacted the said male and invited him to join him in some fun. He told Conall where and when to meet so here he was, waiting for the other associate.

Conall was sitting around his apartment. Not much of an apartment mind you, he had very little cash when he arrived in LA so this disgusting poorly maintained place was all he could afford. He had been sitting here waiting for a call from work, he had been offered a job from Gracie to come work for her. That had turned into we'll contact you with odd jobs as they become available. Not exactly a regular job he noted, but it was better then nothing at all. He'd see what he could do to make himself a valuable addition to her staff and hopefully get himself more and more jobs. As he was sitting here wondering what his first job would be, he heard his phone ring. He rushed over and picked it up hoping it was Gracie offering him an odd job to test his abilities. It wasn't her, but it was indeed one of her associates offering to help him out. At this point he'd take any help he could get, especially if it paid cash. He listened to Shini's directions, made some mental notes on where to go and then said he'd meet him there right away. Since he had to walk, it took him a good 20 minutes to arrive at the location. When he did though, he looked eager and ready to work, although a bit curious as to what kind of work they would be doing.

"There you are. Thought you got lost their for a minute. How have you been?" Shini asked, motioning for him to follow as they talked. While they chatted he kept an eye on the people around them, looking for the perfect target. "So why have yoy come to LA?" He asked, wanting to hear it from him.

Report Post Tip

"Sorry Sir, I'm a bit strapped for cash so I couldn't afford the taxi fair. Had to walk on over here" Conall saw Shini's motion and got in step with him as they walked down the sidewalk. He listened to his question and then formulated a reply, "I came here looking for work. Do to the depression I lost my job at the factory back in New York. And there doesn't seem to be any jobs available there. I heard of work out here in LA so I sold pretty much everything I own to make the trip." Acknowledging just how poor and slightly vulnerable he was feeling at the moment he looked down at his feet feeling somewhat dejected about his rough lot in life.

Report Post Tip

Shini noticed the dejected look. "But for right now you have a roof over your head and food on the table, right? You're off to a better start than I was. My roof was a card board box in Chicago or whatever I could live in out in the woods when I got tired of the city. So don't get so down in the dumps. You might be in a bad spot but they're always be someone more worse off than you. And the hard times eventually pass. So what are you willing to do to get your hands on some money?"

Report Post Tip

Conall nods his head understanding that Shini is trying to cheer him up, he also takes some encouragement from the fact that Shini was once homeless and managed to work himself back into a respectable condition with his current employers. That bodes well for his own chances at making it out here in LA. He ponders the question Shini posed at him as they walk down the sidewalks, ponders it so deeply he doesn't notice the heaved sidewalk and trips on it. Managing to catch himself before falling he smiles sheepishly over at Shini and then shrugs. "I don't know what you have to do to make it for our company, but I am eager to do whatever it takes to be an asset here." he says to Shini after composing himself from the near fall he just had.

Report Post Tip

"Easy there." Shini told him when he stumbled. "Don't want to hurt yourself before your first job do you? Of course you don't." He said n stopping to lean against a wall to let the other get his bearing. When he did, he spotted the perfect target. "That's what I wanted to hear. See the old lady behind you? The one with the walker?"

Report Post Tip

Conall looks around and after a second spots the old lady Shini has indicated he nods his head. After watching her hobble along the sidewalk a few paces he looks back at Shin wondering what he is supposed to do. Is he supposed to help her along to her destination or? "What about her?" he decides to ask Shini what his job has to do with the little old lady hobbling along towards them.

Report Post Tip

"That lady there is going to make you your first dollar. I'm going to distract her and when you see an opening, I want you to snatch her purse and run as if a pack of hell hounds is nipping at your heels. Think you can manage that?" Shini asked,  now looking him in the eye as if daring him to back out on his word.

Report Post Tip

"I...." Conall struggles with his words as he looks back and forth between Shini and the poor old lady. He had no clue this was the type of work he was getting into, and wasn't sure he really wanted to go down this path. He did however need the money, and surely the little old lady wouldn't be too put out by just losing the dollars in her purse. Hopefully she had more money in a bank account somewhere and would be ok. Conall looked back at Shini swallowed hard and nodded his head in accent. "I'll do it." he said quietly, but loud enough for Shini to hear. He had to steal himself for what he was about to do, his parents would not be proud of him for becoming a thief. Times are rough though, and rough times call for a change in behavior to make it through. He'd do what he had to do to make sure he and his family survived the depression.

"Good. Now watch." Shini said before taking a deep breath. It wasn't that he was nervous. He was putting on a mask that would allow the people to see him as they thought he was. Not to be seen as a man but as a child. Shortly after, the look of complete innocence appeared on his face. Something he hadn't had for a very long time. He then put on a face of childish concern before approaching the old woman. "Ma'am, do you have a nickle to spare? My little sister's real sick and I'm only missing a nickle to be able to buy her the medicine she needs. Mama says she'll die without it and she's not even been in this world for a year yet. Will you spare me a nickle?" As expected, the old woman stopped and told him how sorry she was to hear that his sister was so sick and let go of her walker to get into her purse.

Conall watched as Shini put on an innocent face. That much he could readily do, he had never committed a crime in his life so he had the face of an angel already. The hard part was begging, he was in a rather rough spot, but he was still somewhat prideful. He'd beg if he had to, but he far preferred other methods to earning money. Like actual work, while he was thinking along these lines he noticed that the lady had taken her hand off her walked. That very hand was also the hand that belonged to the shoulder with her purse. Remembering what he was supposed to do Conall realized this was his window to grab the purse and run like hell as he was instructed. Not wanting to mess things up with his new employer he took his chance and ran with it. He hurried up snatched the purse just as the lady was starting to look into it and bolted like the wind. After a block or two he ran down an alleyway and stopped about halfway down stooping behind a dumpster to catch his breath. He hoped he had done the deed right by Shini's standards.

Report Post Tip

When Shini saw Conall snatch the person, he was right behind him. The woman screamed for help as they always do but it was already too late. The only thing left was to keep up with the taller man and find a hiding spot. When he saw Conall duck into an alley way, he followed. He moved out of sight of the entrance before he sat down to catch his breath. "Congratulations.... You just made.... Your first dollar.... Welcome to the new chapter of your life." He said, finally catching his breath.

Report Post Tip

Conall was sitting there catching his breath, wondering what he had just done and if he would get caught. When he noticed Shini was right there with him, congratulating him on the new chapter of his life. "Was this really his new life?" he thought to himself. "Am I really turning into a good for nothing thief?" After a bit more reflection he realized he didn't care as much as he thought he would, after all he had people that where relying on him to survive. And he'd do anything to make sure they did, even if it was stealing old ladies purses. He decided though if he was going to lead a life of crime, there have got to be better jobs then this to do. As he rummaged through the old ladies purse looking for her money he realized she only had a few dollars on her. This was going to be enough to put food in his own belly and a drink at the pub to wash it down with, that was about it. He'd have to get in on bigger crimes if he wanted to take care of his family. He made up his mind and turned to Shini, "Do we do anything bigger then this?" He looked at Shini expectantly hoping his new found friend in crime would have some higher paying work to do.

Report Post Tip

Shini couldn't help but chuckle at his question.  "There's a lot more than this. You just have to find your place." He said before standing. "Ditch the purse and let's get going. The longer we stay here, the more likely we'll be caught."

Report Post Tip

Conall pockets the cash and tosses the purse into the dumpster next to him. Afterwards he starts heading further down the alley figuring that going back the way he came was probably a bad idea. As he leaves the alley he looks back to Shini and asks, "Are we going back to the company or heading our separate ways?

Report Post Tip

"We can do either one of those or celebrate. You're choice." Shini said,  shrugging. He didn't have anything particular to do at the moment since the one task he had was now taken care of. "You did good though and you'll fit in just fine."

Report Post Tip

Conall smiles at Shini and then makes up his mind. "Let's go back to your bar and celebrate," he says to Shini and then hails a cab for them to use.

Report Post Tip

"Sounds good to me." Shini said, before the taxi stopped. He then let Conall get in first.

Report Post Tip

Conall hops in the taxi and slides over to the other side. As Shini gets into the taxi Conall gives the driver directions back to the pub. The 2 sit quietly in the cab, neither wanting to talk about their business in the presence of someone that was outside of it.
