She entered her office and headed straight for her chair. Pulling out a notebook and pen she started writing down the list of things that she was going to have to get done, or at least get started on before she could head home for the night if you could still call it that. A glance out the window confirmed that the sun was starting to rise. With a sigh, she started writing her list of things she needed to get done. 1.) Order supplies to make a cast for Shini's hand. 2.) Call around local police stations to see if anyone had reported a child missing. 3.) Find out child's name, if possible. 4.) Find new clothes for the child. She glanced over the list, nothing overly complicated, but she knew it was going to be time-consuming. Picking up the phone she called the medical distribution center and was promptly put on hold. "Really?" she asked the music in her ear dryly, "Many people calling to order band-aids at this time of night?" she added with a shake of her head. She slouched down in her chair and put her feet up on her desk, humming along to the song. Once she got through she quickly ordered plaster and the other things she would need to set Shini's hand when he came to see her in the next day or so. She reached for a medical book on broken bones and checked the table of contents to read about hand injuries. She skimmed over the pages briefly before bookmarking the chapter and setting it to the side to read tomorrow morning when her brain was more awake. After crossing number one off her list she picked up the phone again and called one of the local police stations. After a few rings, a tired voice picked up, "Hello, my name is Grace Angeletti," she introduced herself, "I'm calling to inquire about any missing children reports that may have been filed in the last few months." she explained on the phone. The voice on the phone questioned her motives and reasoning, and Gracie bit her lower lip wondering just how much information she wanted to give this man. "A friend of mine found a small boy, around five or six, he'd been injured and brought him to my office." she told him, "He's currently sleeping and I've not yet had a chance to ask his name, but I was hoping it there are any reports out there, once I find his name assuming he'll give it to me, we can get this rolling so this poor kid can get back to his family." she nodded her head as the voice on the other end spoke. "Oh, I see." she said, "And do you think any other precinct is going to have any?" she asked him, and then jotted down a few numbers that the officer had rattled off. "No, I know. Missing children cases are rare around these parts, which is why I figured I would call and ask." she paused for a moment, listening, "Right, absolutely. Well yes. Thank you for your help, and have a good night." she told the voice before hanging up. She glanced down at the list of numbers she had been given, she was no closer to finding out who the boy was. She picked up the phone and started to dial again, as an idea had taken root in her head, and she wasn't sure she was willing to explore the idea right now. Maybe once she had exhausted all of her other options and reached a complete dead end, but right now, sleep deprived and emotionally exhausted, was not the time to make life changing choices. When the phone was answered at the second police station she took a deep breath, pushed the thought from her mind and started explaining to the new person exactly who she was and why she was calling. |
