Only five years old and amaranth knew how you treated those who thought they could push you around. You tree stumped them in the face, this particular target though she could not do that she would have to find another way, a bit less direct yet with the same message as a tree stumping would send.
Not only was William three years older he outweighed her as well he could sit on her and squash her like a pancake. They grew up in the same neighborhood, his house at the end of a cal-ed-sac,while her house was at the beginning of the cul-de-sac. He had harassed her verbally, she could ignore that did as a matter of fact. It was the physical bulling she would not stand for. He pulled her hair, pushed her down made her made her skin her knees once and drew blood that was the extent of the abuse the little girl with a little curl in the middle of her forehead could take.
The bully always walked as far away from the begonias that grew along the outside of the eight foot wooden fence that guarded her play yard. This made her curious so she went to his mother and asked her why he did that, stating she thought it was so silly they were flowers afterall. The bullies mother explained to the innocent five year old that her son was severely allergic to them. This made ideas start to swim in her mind like a school of hungry fish in a feeding frenzy.
One Sunday afternoon the young child went out in the yard the sun was shining the birds were singing . The wind carried sounds of horns honking and tires screeching from the highway not far from their homes. As the sun shone on her face she started humming Jimmy Crack Corn and I Don't Care as she picked a dozen begonias from the bushes outside her fence. Smiling sweetly she held her prize in her little hand tightly as she skipped still whistling the tune towards the back of the cul-de-sac She approached the house at the corner in the back still whistling her tune as she knocked on the door and then rang the doorbell ding ding diiiiing. She held that last one just in-case they did not hear the first two. She slid her right hand containing the begonias behind her back as she heard the door start to open. She smiled sweetly with a mischievous glint in her eyes as she saw William behind his mother. Her smile grew wide and her eyes brighter as she produced the flowers to his mother joyously saying, “ I thought you might need a smile today.” She held the flowers as as the mother stared at her blankly and placed a hand on sons chest as if pushing him away." I am sorry hon I can't take those William is allergic.” Stating it plainly hoping the five year would understand. The young girl dropped the flowers on the front porch and ran off, had the mother seen the look in her young eyes she would have known that the begonias were no mistake. The bully was sick for nearly a week his mother kept him locked away in the house, ironically he never bothered picking on the little girl after that. |
