Sal had just finished wrapping presents and filled stockings for his nieces and nephews who would be visiting this year. The man was tired, but excited to see his family and take a load off, to take his mind off of business. A nearby clock chimes. It was Christmas. For a moment, Sal reflects on the masterpiece... a fine clock, constructed many years ago, it was a gift handed by his father. He says to himself. 'Lately, many people take credit for what their fathers and mothers have accomplished. How can this be? Yes, this clock is a fine and masterfully constructed piece, but surely the son or daughter of the smith cannot take credit for it's existence.' Sal was certain the neigbhors could hear him, but he spoke loudly on purpose. 'Yes, we should be proud of our heritage, we should be proud of what our ancestors accomplished, we should reflect on their diaries, but... we, ourselves should strive to do better. It's a twofold process, To reflect on the lessons learnt and Improve and Innovate. We can't get stuck on Step A. Marveling over the pass gets us nowhere, but looking at the failures and areas of that needed improve, will assist and motivate us to succeed and to stride... perhaps tenfold. Too often, "Do you know my father? He did this... he did that?" Honestly, I don't care what he did or didn't do. He did bad, perhaps you can do good, he did good, well perhaps you can do better. Too often, we are caught up on these nitty gritty, these fine details, yet today these deeds mean nothing and they have nothing to show for them, this ancestral pride holds us back and we fall into stagnancy, we become fat and lazy on the wealth of our parents... Being proud and remembering the past is a good thing, but to bath ourselves day and night in the past is setting oneself up for disaster.' Sal pours himself a glass of eggnog and kicks back by the roosting fire. |

The Captain's gonna have to go ahead and agree with you on this one. A person can be proud about what their ancestors did, but why in the hell would the rest of us care? Shamelessly whoring their accolades in the streets, in hopes of bolstering your own status makes you look like a jackass. Stand up and do something yourself if you want praise. Personally, The Captain only cares about what he does, not what his parents and further back did, and not what anybody else does. The Captain's going to outdo anything his father before him did, and anything his children could ever hope to do. He doesn't want his snot-nosed kids trying to live off of all of his accomplishments. The Captain hopes somebody shoots them, if they attempt it. |

I guess my main concern is: Captain, what in the hell are you doing in Sal's house? Let him drink his egg nog man! These children today, they're spoiled. I hate to say it, but I am already spoiling my little ones (especially after my most recent take). We try to show them love, introduce them to "the guys", and teach them how to be proper men and/or women. But when we pass from this world, gods that we were to them, they feel alone and perhaps lost. Maybe they are searching for a connection, albeit a small one, so that they may carve out their piece of the pie. Maybe I'm in the holiday spirit, or perhaps there was too much rum in my own egg nog, but I am in the mood to forgive a little name-dropping here or there. Is that so bad? |
