The name pretty much says it all. I think it would not only be a nifty addition, but a realistic one to allow us to read our mail while in jail. As it is, we can already be made aware that we have mail, and some of the nagging 10 minute sentences we are sometimes stuck for drive me right up the wall when I know I have a mail waiting...

The realism part - in real life(Not sure about in the 30's,) but now-a-days anyway, you have access to your mail. Thus it makes sense that on here we can, too.


Pros - Would help some people from going insane.

-Probably fairly easy to code.

Cons - Can not think of any.

The only problem is, you could send mail to someone, getting there attention you bust you out. Which in that case most already use IRC for, it would truly be a realistic addition to the game.

Even if we weren't able to send mail back, it would be nice to be able to read it. I do see where you're coming from, though. I must agree, most people do use IRC for this already.

Yeah, i guess this suggestion makes the game more realistic, but if you write something like bust me out and mail it, i think the guards first check it. So, i think you should just be able to read mails and not send them.

I don't see any reason to not implement this idea. In fact I was just about to suggest the same idea, and then my Internet fucked up (excuse the language). I'm glad someone else had the same idea as me and posted :)

During the eary part of the 20th centuary a prisoner had four rights: food, clothing, shelter, and medical care (You may also have the right to be ass raped in the showers but I don't see this as a Right per se). Everything else was a privilege that had to be earned. Some privileges a prisoner could earn included working, corresponding with and having visits from family members, access to the prison library, and recreational activities such as painting and music. See the amazingly superb Shawshank Redemption for more evidence of this.

During most of the history of the United States, prisoners had no legal right to humane conditions of confinement that could be judicially enforced. This view was so strong that one much-cited case even described a suing prisoner as a "slave of the state".

The hands-off doctrine precluded judges from determining what rights survived incarceration. Judges refused to intervene on the ground that their function was only to free those inmates illegally confined, not to superintend the treatment and discipline of prisoners in penitentiaries.

The hands-off doctrine formally ended with two decisions from the Supreme Court in the early 1970s. In the first decision, Justice Byron White explicitly sounded the death knell for the hands-off doctrine in a single line: "[T]here is no Iron Curtain between the Constitution and the prisons of this country". At about the same time, Justice Lewis A. Powell, writing for the Court, stressed that when a prison regulation or practice offends a fundamental Constitutional guarantee the federal courts will exercise their duty to protect those rights.

Sorry guys, in my humble opinion being able to read your mail in jail is not realistic. Prision is a punishment, albeit a harsh one, and should you have to serve out the full term of your sentence as I have done on a billion occasions in the past, then so be it.

here is my take, i d not think you should be able to SEND mail while in jail, you should be able to READ mail while in jail. i also agree that it could help you not go insane and if you see your mail thinkg go off right as you get busted it can be a huge annoyence. being able to read but not reply would make this better while not allowing you to get someone attention to pull you out.
