What is important to you in this life. Started by: Robert_McCall on Jul 06, '10 07:07

McCall pulls up to the HQ in his Custom Swallow Sidecar Jaguar SS1. He'd only just had the car shipped from England and Tyrion had generously allowed his own mechanic to work on the car, raising its speed by almost 35%. McCall was pleased with the finished product, and reminded himself to personally thank the Boss and his mechanic. Turning away from the HQ McCall walked a short distance down to the street corner and looked around for a suitable place to speak.

Friends, I'm here today to ask the question, 'What is truely important to you in this life?' What is the one thing which constantly inspires you drives you to succeed? I look around and I see different people playing their roles in different ways. There are those for whom money is the be all and end all, for others it is fame or infamy, for others it is Honour or Omerta. I myself am driven by a desire to make a difference, to be remembered for some reason after I'm dead, for people to come up to my descendants and say 'Aren't you so and so's son or grandson, or wasn't your Ancestor so and so's RHM.

So what is it that you want from this life? The best gun, the most Bodyguards, to be Godfather of a City?

Rocco listens to the speech, usually tempted to hold his tongue he decided against it this time. The topic of discussion that this man had brought about intrigued Rocco. He lights up a cigarette and begins to think of his next words, choosing them carefully.

In this thing of ours a lot of people set out for personal gain, I however am not here for anything like that. I'm a simple business man who's business is deemed "unlawful" according to the police, I want nothing more than to make a living for myself, make my Family stronger, and make a name for myself for future bloodline to take over the Family business I leave behind.

Rocco thinks about what has just been said and decides to summarize and recap his main point.

I guess what I'm after, Mr McCall, is nothing more than respect. Earned respect, mind you, for my efforts in helping the Family out.

Rocco wraps up his speech and takes another drag off of his cigarette.

Sylvestro Carollo steps away from the lamp post he is always leaning against and walks over to the jag with the impossibly long hood. Must be a 20 under there. I got a Deuce coupe in storage, just an 8 though. Nice car. Sam lights up. So anyway, you wondered what was important to me and what I want out of this thing. Let me preface my comments with an observation. I like your answer, that idea of being remembered, it's what we all want and is why I think the following is important. It is important for me to fill my role once its found, or evolved, but not to try and define it. I look for that spark of camaraderie or the flame of controversy. I want anyone who comes into contact with me for more than a passing moments to come away with strong feelings about who I am be they positive or negative. I think that is the surest way to be remembered by a few and that may be the best I can hope for. In my view, only by circumstance and then hard work could anyone rise and leave an actual legacy.

Sam walks back over to his lamp post.

Hearing sams talk Luigi laughs to himself and then slaps him friendly on the back while he is standing by his lamp post.

Well mate i see you achive that goal on a daily basis, and i dare say also that you have left a legacy with many young man from The Easy Outfit.

Luigi walks close to the people discussing the matter,

I think having goals is a really good thing that is needed to achive big things in life. But its been said that a good battleplan never survives the first bullit of the enemy and i think it also applies to life in this thing of ours. To ride the wave and not drunk one needs to be able to follow the ebb and flow of of it and certainly also posses a good bit of luck. So longtime goals ability to adapt to the constant changes is what brings succes.

Luigi having a sip of a bottle he get out of his pocket seems to thing for abit then continiues, but to answer your question directly, succes to me is having people know im around. See and know my name, shooter, moneymaker or gf those are all means to an end. What matters is the immortality that lies in being kept alive in other peoples minds...

Hmmm McCall, I know its your question but I don't really feel you've answered it yourself - ie. by saying that you were attracted to the mafia life because you wanted to make a difference. After all, that applies to almost anything. People want to make a difference in everything they do, but thats not what attracts them to their roles in the first place, unless its a role in the peace corps. Anyway for me its the ladies.

McCall looks at Fyodor_ trying to comprehend what he means. His words are so strange and alien and are unlike anything he has heard of before. Almost an oxymoron.

Sorry Fyodor, what is a Peace Corps? I'm afraid its a term I'm not familiar with. However I thought I answered my own statement quite well. I want to be remembered. When I arrived here after the death of my Father, people asked me if one of my ancestors had served with Donna Mercedes many years ago. Reading through my Great grandfather's diary I see that Flying Pig remembered yet another of my ancestors, and asked if Grandpappy Tiscalli was related to him. The work i did for the government before joining a life of crime was clandestine, and although I'm sure in many instances I helped make the world a safer place, you will not have known of me or my work. If you did I wouldn't have being the job right. So when I retired I wanted to make a difference, to help people, to stand out from the regular joes and be remembered beyond my time.

Now can you honestly say that saying you joined for the women is an honest answer? you are only here to get laid and nothing else? I suppose each to their own.

Anselmo looks at McCall with a hint of envy on his face

Don Tyrion gives you Jaguars to drive around in? Must be nice. All I ever go from Godfather SpaceMountain was this.

Anselmo holds up a bologna and cheese sandwich and makes an expression that resembles a colon and a backslash

Goddam thing even has a bite taken out of it already too

This is a great topic you've chosen to address, Mr. McCall. The answer, frighteningly enough, is that many Friends of Ours don't know what they want from this life. Or, they have a vague concept of what they think they want from this life, but can't even provide an explanation as to why they want it. They simply go through the motions until the day comes when somebody whispers in their ear and blows their brains out, leaving them with nothing more than a frustrated and bitter next of kin and a namesake that will most likely be forgotten. It's one of the greatest tragedies of Our World.

I'd be willing to bet that if you took a poll from a pool of random mobsters what they are looking for from this life of crime, 9 times out of 10 the answer will be "auth". The remaining one percent will most likely give you a generic reply such as "I live to serve my Godfather and my city!" The latter response is generally insincere and usually issued because the person thinks that is the answer their leaders want to hear. That answer isn't fooling anyone, most likely not even the person saying it.

Auth is probably the most popular answer. But why? If given the opportunity, what would you do with it? Why do you want it so badly? Auth is a lofty and worthy goal, but if the goal ends with simply getting to wear a bold suit I don't see the point in working so hard to obtain it.

My opinion is that people should aim to be an impact player. Before I'm misdiagnosed as suffering from OOC'itis, the term "impact player" is a term that could be applied to the business world, sports, and even Cosa Nostra. There's various ways to go about being one. Some choose to do it with the pen while others the sword. Either way ,to echo what Mr. McCall is saying I believe that making an impact and leaving some sort of mark should be what every mobster aspires to achieve. Even if an impact isn't made (through street speeches, helping others, violence, etc.), at least you can die knowing that you tried. It's a great feeling to have an ancestor remembered for something he or she did in the past generations later.

Given te nature of your question Robert, it wouldn't suprise me if you don't get an overwhelming response to this, as people's motives are often personal. But I think that this is a question that all mobsters should think about, whether they choose to answer it publically or not.

Alf looks over towards Anselmo with a piece of cheese hanging form his bologna stained mouth

What man i was hungry.

Anselmo as usual you set out it perfectly, still to this day all of my familly line have struggled to come to terms with this very subject.even upon taking my decision to enter this life i had sat myself down(on the toilet) and tried in vain to set out my goals and ask my self questions,

what do i want to achieve?

what will i be this time round?

what impact can i make?

These were amoungst many others, which yet i still can not answer? However what i will choose to say is that i am as i now my sons before me will be, i  am proud of what i have achived here, when sitting on the toilet that glourious day i did not for one minute think i would still be here at this point in my life or would i have made the contributions i have towards my familly both with my earnings and with my knowledge but to name a few.

So  i would like to say that i didnt know what i wanted but i have done myself proud, much better than i thought i would,so to put it on the flip side i feel it worked out a lot better for me not knowing those initial question's.Granted i have a basic idea of how to get on in this world, but i feel i have made my own luck here.Plus i could sit on the "bog" all day and fantasise all day about being the greatest gf this land has ever seen bit i took a more realistic approach. Dont get me wrong there is nothing wrong with aiming high but one can become ignorant and that can breed contempt and bring suicide to alot of mobster's who didnt make the grade or at least thier ambitions of gf.

So for me playing it on a daily basis worked.

with that alf licks his lips turns towards anselmo with a look of hunger in his eyes picks up his knife and runs at anselmo.
