It hadn't taken long for William to figure out a basic plan after he had awoken in the crypt. Still unable to recall most of his memories, and still none-the-wise as to how long he had been unconscious, William had set out after a short nap to check out the local scene. He heard a rustling nearby, and smiled. Most of his memories were a blur, but there was plenty that he still did remember, and the scent of human blood was one of those things. Stalking what he deduced to be the groundskeeper for the cemetery, William came to the realization that he wasn't even sure which city it was that he'd intended on checking out. All he knew was that he felt the hum of a big city nearby within the ground, and that checking out the city making such a hum would be worth his time. Creeping into the row adjacent to the row of headstones that the middle-aged man had been tending to, William lit a cigarette quietly before speaking loud enough to be heard. "Ello chap! Lovely evenin' innit?" The grounds-keeper whipped his head around, immediately wincing and clutching at his chest. As he looked William over incredulously, the man's breathing leveled out. He reached behind his head with one hand to massage the area of his neck that he'd whip-lashed in the moment of surprise. Speaking with a shaky voice, "Mary Mother of God, lad! This cemetery is off-limits after dark! And what are you doing creeping up on an old man like that, almost enough to give me a heart attack!" Color crept back into the man's face slowly, though his voice cracked repeatedly. William tried to avoid rolling his eyes. Like he could be bothered with respecting areas that were off-limits. "Terribly sorry, kind sir. My most sincere apologies; you see, my mode of transportation has broken down. I've been walking the back roads for quite some time now, and have become rather disoriented," William said with a charming voice. He kept one hand busy with the cigarette, the other held at his side; palm up and opened, a very non-threatening stance. He paused for a moment, taking a long pull from his cigarette. "I spotted this cemetery and dearly hoped someone would be working the graveyard shift! Again, I apologize for the startle. Do you think yourself capable of forgiving me?" As William spoke, the man became notably less defensive, the remainder of the color in his face had returned. He nodded a few times, slowly, believing William's story. "Of course, of course. The nerves aren't what they used to be, sonny, I tell you that... I can't afford to leave the grounds though, so I'm not sure of how much use I'd be to you unfortunately..." William took one more drag from his cigarette before crushing it out on his boot. The man's blood alone would have helped William significantly, but he had information to gather, and the man could be of use in the future should William choose to make the nearby crypt his regular resting spot. "I only require the name of the nearest city, and a point in the right direction. You wouldn't have to abandon your post at all and this information would be quite appreciated." William said, with a noticeable curtness in his voice. The man smiled, seemingly content to help so long as he didn't have to leave the cemetery. Raising his hand up he pointed slightly over William's left shoulder with a nod and a raised eyebrow. "You're kidding? The closest city is New York... just how long were you out walking?!" He gave a chuckle before continuing, "In that general direction a bit, follow the signs once you make it back to a main road. Now, if you don't mind, I have work to attend to." "Highly appreciated, old chap, highly appreciated," William grunted, turning quickly and walking off in the direction he'd been pointed. New York turned out to be very near indeed. It felt like merely seconds to him before William had arrived at the edge of the city. He spent the first few hours surveying the layout of the roads, marking the areas that seemed extra populated in his mind, and listening in as many conversations as he could manage to overhear. The time passed by quicker than anticipated, it was already rapidly approaching 03:00. The details of his memories still eluded him, but William still knew that daylight would be fatal for him. He knew that he should return to the crypt soon, but the thirst for knowledge overwhelmed him. He needed more time in the city. Across the street from where he stood, William saw a wealthy looking man drunkenly stumbling his way down the sidewalk. He smirked, a plan forming in his mind in an instant. Crossing the road in a few strides, William crept behind the drunk for half a block before reaching in carefully and relieving the man of his wallet. He recalled seeing a run-down all night cafe with a sign indicating they had rooms for rent, not too far off from there. Circling the surrounding area, William's face broke into a grin as he turned a corner and saw the building he'd been thinking of. Walking up to the building he pulled the door open and stepped inside, proceeding right to the bar. The gentleman he spoke with grunted and thrust a room key across the counter-top, holding his hand out for payment. William fished out the recently acquired wallet and pressed a few bills into the barkeep's hand. Judging by the brief, but genuine look of shock that flashed across his face, William had overpaid significantly. With a shrug, William turned and sat at one of the tables located farthest from the door. William sat there for a couple hours, occasionally ordering a few drinks to appease the barkeep, thinking through all the different areas of the city he'd seen. It certainly was an intriguing city; seemingly never-sleeping and overpopulated beyond belief. In the brief time he'd spent thus far in the city, William had no doubt that the city had a thriving criminal presence. He had seen several drug deals taking place, including one where the person buying appeared to be a cop. Plenty of the blocks he walked had obvious prostitutes on their corners, and thuggish looking gents stood guarding some of the entrances to local businesses - bulges in their jackets indicative of a gun. There was no way all of these criminals operated in the same city without complete mayhem, William thought with a scowl. How were they doing it? Then it hit him, out nowhere. The key to an entire city being controlled and influenced by those outside the law, seemingly very well at that... was organization. Making his way to the room he'd rented, William came to a conclusion. He would set out the next evening and find himself a local crew to associate himself with. From there, he couldn't be sure what the future held. |
