The Srebrenica Massacre was the July 1995 killing of at least 8,000 Bosniak males, ranging in age from teenagers to the elderly, in the region of Srebrenica in Bosnia and Herzegovina by the Army of (the so called) Republika Srpska under the command of general Ratko Mladic. In addition to the Army of (the so called) Republika Srpska, special state security forces of Serbia known as the "Scorpions" participated in the massacre. The United Nations had previously declared Srebrenica a UN protected "safe area" and 400 armed Dutch peacekeepers were present at the time, but they did not prevent the massacre. The massacre included several instances where preteen children and women were also killed. While the exact number killed will never be known, the list of people missing or killed in Srebrenica compiled by the Federal Commission of Missing Persons so far includes 8,373 names.

Hrm, on second thought, my reply seems overly pithy without further explanation -- I personally believe that an important aspect of remembrance for such tragedies is properly recalling all the people and organizations that had the power to intervene and chose not to.

I know Bosnia pretty much had a genocide on muslims around then. Was this part of that?

I was wondering that since the UN isn't really recognizing the size of this event...would you have any links to any pages or literature of some sort to this event. I wouldn't mind reading something about this event, as its not the most 'public' event.

Tragedies... massacres... is part of this world. Everyone wants power and that is where all hell breaks loose. There may be hope... who knows. This is very sad indeed and i share the compassion. May all the lost sauls rest in peace!
