Preface
It takes a certain character to let go of the past. A certain space within the mental clatter, and clutter, to be present to the truth. A degree of soul, if you would. Because no matter how many times they shun me because of the colour of my skin, I forgive them. I have to, if I am to become like them. The one's weilding the power. So I can then feel what it's like to be equal. If only in my mind, in that same space, where I find the courage to rub shoulders with them. The suits. The hats. The ties. The outer identity of a gangster. But who am I? But a black man trying to make it in this world. A simple shoe shiner. I ply my trade and bide my time. And polish my character as I shine their shoes. For when opportunity meets a ready and willing soul, well, I long for that moment. To prove to myself I am like them. That I can walk in their shoes. The same one's I've attended to all these years. Some day. Some day...
Jules is an Afircan-American twenty something with ambitions beyond the limits of social acceptance. He knows that all are equal, regardless of the tint of skin. And just to prove it, he will become like the men and women that really run these towns, these cities. The one's who live and die by their own rules.
