Gaetano "Tommy" Franco was raised on the streets of south Philadelphia to Angelo and Carmella Franco. His family had immigrated from Ottavanio, a small village in Naples. Originally having left to escape a vendetta placed on them by the Camorra, they soon began to see their exile as a chance to change their lives for the better. Unfortunately, Tommy was a wild child who was constantly getting himself into trouble, even associating with the local mobsters within his neighborhood and doing odd-jobs for them. As he got older and continued to get more and more involved in the world of the gangsters around him, Tommy's parents had finally had enough and kicked him out of the house in disgrace. Seeing his predicament, one of the local mafioso slipped him some cash and gave him the names of some people on the west coast who might be able to help him find more work, chief among them: Francesca "Frankie" Messina. After doing some work for the Messina family and impressing them with his oh-so great banking skills, he was given the nickname "Rusty" by Don Francesca's right-hand man, Sully Black.
