Renton's father grew up with aspirations to make it well off as an athlete in football (soccer), and he had a good start. He did well in L.A and went to Texas after being offered a position there. However, fate would have him injure himself and be left to find another job elsewhere. Living in Texas at the time when the great depression and famines hit, it only exasperated him. He moved over to Las Angeles seeking better opportunities despite his wife's wishes to move closer to Mexico, her homeland.
There was constant pressure for his three sons to be successful. The eldest pleased his father at first, but after getting into some dicey business, the middle brother, Gideon, ratted him out to his father. Being thrown out, Matthew felt he had no where else to go. He ended up getting involved in crime. He moved over to Mexico and is currently involved with cartels there. On the other hand, Gideon is on his way to become a successful film director and is a model citizen.
Renton has found himself caught between the two ways of life his brothers chose. At first, he followed his father's footsteps into soccer, but he found himself unsatisfied. He was hit hard when his elder brother was thrown out of the house and still corresponded with him behind the rest of his family's back.
Now, he really didn't have an interest in crime itself. In fact, he thought he would become some broke singer and had a passion for entertainment similar to Gideon, but then he encountered his first relationship. Unbeknownst to him, the girl had ties to the mafia and her relationship with him was faked to just get access to his brother in Mexico. Betrayed, Renton tried to leave the relationship, but his ties with the family wasn't so easily broken and they were his gateway to addictive substances... He genuinely wanted it all to work out, but he found himself starting to get involved in things far out of his control or comfort zone.
Eventually, he was caught by the middle brother, Gideon. He was practically dragged out and lived with his brother for some time recovering from all that had happened. He lied to brother about how involved he was not wanting to feel ashamed or be thrown out like the eldest. They saw him more of a victim then he had actually been. Again, he tried to cut all ties with crime, but eventually, he felt useless in every other job -- tainted one could even say. He was so ashamed that he could never enjoy time with Gideon because he felt that his brother wasn't really spending time with the real him. He wondered if he could go with Matthew, but he told him it was too dangerous for him to join. Renton was dismayed.
Eventually, the double life proved too much for him plus his ex continued to mess with him and Gideon. He ran away with nothing since he had depended on Gideon for all this time. He didn't want to feel ashamed any longer or confused about where he should be. If he was going to follow the footsteps of his brother, Matthew, then so be it. He would get strong enough to reunite with Matthew and find a place that made sense for him.
