We, the wayward daughters,

born to mothers who prayed

with clasped hands and hearts,

-in earnest-

for us to be anything

other than everything we were.

We were hell and we were haunted eyes.

 

We, the bringers of light and fire.

We were sharp tongues and sharper smiles,

and eyes full of cut-and-run.

We were burnt bridges, and scorched earth,

and we’d sooner reduce a kingdom to ash

than offer compliance

for the sake of itself.

 

We were fire and we were freedom.

We, the brave and the brazen.

We, who refused

-in solemn defiance-

to wear shame or silence

as an heirloom.

 

We were wild and we were warriors.

We, the breakers of curses,

for the sake of our daughters,

for the sake of ourselves.

for the sake of our mothers who pray

in earnest.
