Lead Counsel for the Back Seat Drivers

~ Formerly a subcrew of ~

The Corktown Couch Club

Full Name: Michael Haller

Alias: “The Halftime Lawyer” / “Backseat Barrister”
Affiliation: Independent legal fixer, sometimes representing wise guys, working girls, neighbourhood hustlers, guys who "didn’t see anything"
Role: Lawyer, Negotiator, Deal-Maker, Consigliere
Era / Locale: Late 1950s–1960s LA (Downtown, Bunker Hill, Little Tokyo, Boyle Heights, Chavez Ravine, Lincoln Heights)

🕴️ Background

Michael Haller didn’t start in the streets, but the streets adopted him anyway.

His father was a well-respected defence lawyer who believed the law was a cathedral: sacred, structured, eternal. Michael grew up in courtrooms, watching justice happen, and watching people fall through the cracks when justice didn’t care about them.

After his father died, Michael discovered something:
the law isn’t holy. The law is a business.

And business is everywhere.

Michael Haller was Los Angeles, palm trees, neon, courthouse corridors, silent deals in parking lots.
But Los Angeles can turn on you fast.

A case went bad.
A client he saved died in the street five days later.
The blame didn’t fall on the shooter, it fell on him.

Word spread:

Haller protects the wrong people.

It wasn’t true, but it didn’t matter. Truth has never been the coin of the realm.

So, he packed what fit into the trunk of his car, mailed his law license for transfer, and drove east, following a map of old favours and family ties.

He rented a cheap upstairs room above a bakery that smells like yeast and cigarettes.
He parks outside the old Tiger Stadium and runs consultations from the back seat.

Same work. Different city.
Same wolves. Different teeth.

He’s known not because he’s the best lawyer, but because he’s the one who answers the phone.

Even at 3:17am.

🧠 Personality & Approach

Soft-spoken. Observant.
He doesn’t push. He lets people talk themselves into deals.

Never promises freedom.
Only promises he’ll fight harder than the state will.

Knows a guy for everything:

  • A mechanic who erases bullet holes from doors

  • A doctor who doesn’t report stabbings

  • A bail bondsman who owes him a favour

  • A priest who keeps secrets because he has to

Michael Haller survives on favours owed, not money.

The mob doesn’t own him, but they use him.
Police don’t trust him, but they need him to keep things calm.
Citizens don’t like him, but they call him when there’s no one else.

He is the man who knows where “the bodies are buried”, figuratively, but often not figuratively enough.

📍 Notable Incidents

The Cassaro Bar Standoff
Two cops had a bartender pinned for “resisting.” Michael walked in, said one sentence, and both officers backed down. Nobody knows what he said. They all remember the silence afterward.

The Rivera Kid Case
A 16-year-old accused of killing a loan collector. Everyone expected prison. Michael got him probation and quietly arranged to relocate him. Word is, someone else paid the price later.

The Motel Bible Deal
A bookie owed the wrong people. Michael negotiated the debt down to a single promise:
The bookie goes to church every Sunday.
He’s still alive. Still attends.

The Corktown Bar Mediation
Two Irish crews nearly turned a wake into a bloodbath. Michael convinced both sides the dead man would be ashamed of the noise. The guns went away. The whiskey stayed.

The Ambassador Bridge Job
A mule got snagged on the border. Michael didn’t argue innocence, he argued procedural misconduct so elegantly that the prosecution apologized on record.

The Cass Corridor Apartment Fire
A heroin runner facing arson charges walked free after Michael exposed fire code violations by the building owner. Nobody talked. Everybody remembered.

🧥 Appearance

  • Dark, worn suit, not cheap, just used hard.

  • Tie always slightly loosened.

  • Hair slicked back, but never perfectly.

  • Hands rougher than a lawyer’s should be.

  • Eyes that say he’s seen too much, but still cares, against his better judgment.

He looks like a man who:

  • sleeps in his car sometimes,

  • smokes only when he loses a case,

  • and spends more time thinking than talking.

⚖️ Reputation

Among criminals: The lawyer who won’t rat and won’t preach.
Among cops: “Haller again? Christ, just give him the files.”
Among civilians: Suspicious but weirdly respected.
Among judges: Knows the procedure better than most public defenders.

He’s not corrupt.
He’s not clean.
He’s necessary.

Tagline:

“Everybody’s guilty of something. My job is to make sure the wrong sin doesn’t decide your sentence.”
