Arya wasn’t a big fan of paperwork, but it always seemed to find its way to her desk. There were leases to sign off on, shipments to authorize, money to move, it was endless. It was quickly becoming evident that things needed a second pair of eyes. She barely even had time to pick a pocket or take a kill these days, it was all just paperwork. She laid down her pen and sighed, rubbing her hands over her face as she looked at the papers around her. Everything was in place, she just needed the right person to take the job.
The location was perfect for a Headquarters, it had the proper security and stashes, a good entrance and exit. All it lacked was someone to run the operation. With a second home in the district, Bella Vista had the potential to blossom. She picked up her pen, grabbing a fresh note and scrawling a message across the paper. She sealed it with wax, stamping the seal of the direwolf across the page. She rang a bell on her desk, and in a moment, her courier appeared at the door.
“Raven, I want you to deliver this letter to Epiphany,” she said, passing the letter to her courier before leaning back in her chair. She took a small moment to smile to herself before she leaned forward with a sigh, turning back to her never-ending pile of paperwork as she waited for her message to arrive.
…
“Epiphany,
Come to my office. We have things to discuss.
Don Arya_Stark”
…
This was not the kind of message that lent itself to a sense of security. In the mafia, a letter like this could mean a variety of things, but it was not the kind of summons that one ignored. It did not take long for Epiphany to arrive at Arya’s office, and he was quickly shown into her office. Arya was seated at her desk, the papers now arranged into neat piles, and in the center sat a single unmarked folder. She gestured to the chair across from her, indicating that Epiphany was to sit.
She let a long moment of silence lapse before she picked up the central folder, extending it towards him.
“I have an assignment for you,” she said, fixing her dark brown gaze on him. “You have been a faithful and integral part of my caporegime, and I need someone to step alongside me here in the district. There is a lot of work associated in running this district, and with you handling a portion of the area, it will allow me some much needed… freedom. I have arranged for a Headquarters here in Bella Vista so that you can grow and improve this thing of ours.”
“Now, what will the newest family of Bella Vista be named?” |

Epiphany was about to hop in his car to start his day when he noticed an envelope sealed with wax under one of his windshield wipers. "This was a first," he thought. He looked around to see if anyone was nearby or for any clues as to who might have left the envelope. Not noticing anyone, he lifted the wiper and grabbed the envelope. After examining it a bit closer, he noticed the wax seal was engraved with his family's crest. Questions immediately flowed through his head, he hadn't received a letter from his boss like this since he was accepted into the family in the first place. After opening it up his heart felt like it might have stopped for a second after reading the very short and to the point letter.
“Epiphany,
Come to my office. We have things to discuss.
Don Arya_Stark”
"This could be good or bad," he said to himself. He wasted no time and hopped into his car and drove straight to the HQ. He knew what his boss needed him for was very important, but not too urgent, otherwise, he was sure it wouldn't have been a letter that invited him to speak with her. As he pulled up to the HQ he was still sifting through his memory trying to find any reason why he was summoned to see her. A bit nervous on the inside and composed on the outside, he let a breath of air out and walked through the HQ doors. As he walked inside, he was redirected straight to Don Arya_Stark's office. When he got to her office he knocked on the door frame, as the door was wide open. Arya looked up at him, her face stern as she motioned him to sit down. Still composing himself, Epiphany felt beads of sweat start to form on his forehead and sat down. With the paperwork literally piling up on Arya's desk, he didn't notice the folder lying on the center of her desk until she handed it over to him. Epiphany was relieved to know that he hasn't done anything wrong, in fact, he was being commended. He felt honored at the fact that Arya trusted him with a task like this, to set up and run a family of his own, under her wing and the ultimate supervision of the big boss Spaceman. She had asked him what he wanted to name his new crew. After giving it a bit of thought, he had the perfect name. "The Midnight Society," he said to her. He and a couple of his childhood friends would sneak off into the woods just after all of their parents went to sleep and sat around a campfire telling scary stories and they called themselves The Midnight Society and he thought it would be a great fit and it had a nice ring to it. |

Arya let a small smile cross her face when Epiphany told her the name of his new family.
“The Midnight Society… I like it,” she said, her smile broadening as she straightened another stack of papers. “I think it will fit right in with the ambiance of the district, don’t you think?” she said, pushing her chair out from behind her desk, rising from her seat. Even though she only just passed five feet tall, she carried herself in a way that made her seem larger than life at times.
“Now, I’m sure you will have some business to attend to later, but I think we’ve deserved to celebrate this evening,” she said, stepping around her desk and opening the door, heading downstairs to the main room of the Hall of Faces. It would be good to get Epiphany his own space, her hall was getting a little crowded. Most of the family was milling about the hall, eating or drinking, the smoke from their cigarettes wafting up into the stone arches. She made her way to the front of the room, pouring herself a glass of wine before clearing her throat. A hush fell over the crew, and the eyes of the room fixed upon her.
“Faceless Men and Women, it is my pleasure and privilege to announce that this evening, Epiphany will be stepping up alongside me as captain here in Bella Vista. Please, give him your warmest wishes and congratulations, and make sure he has far too much to drink tonight,” she said, raising her glass to her new captain, taking a hearty swig as the room erupted into clapping and hooting. |
