Notre Dame Cathedral is burning down

So damn sad when seeing this, but it will be rebuilt for sur, the most important is that no one got injured in this horrible fire.

Yeah, 850 years standing and earlier they were saying is the renovators/decorators equipment that has burnt down the main section of it.   Visits to Paris won't be quite the same with room and spire collapsed, items inside destroyed and the walls etc never quite the same and of course stain class broke or melted. 

Sad to see.

It happened on the anniversaries of the Boston Marathon Bombing and the sinking of the Titanic. April 15th seems to be a crazy day. 

Lincoln died on the 15th too

Since there are only 365 days a year, is it not more than likely that multiple tragedies will have happened on any given day throughout the years? 

Yeah it was a sad sight to be especially during Holy Week with Good Friday and Easter around the corner. 

Well... Lets look at it

There are 365 days a year and only one April 15.. Unless I have forgotten how to do probability that is 1/365 or about 0.2%

The titanic sank in 1912.. 2019-1912 is 107 years. 107 X 365= 39,055 days roughly because no leap years calculated 

Since we are looking for two days in particular April 15 1912 and April 15 2019 that gives us two favorable outcomes to 39,055 possible outcomes. 2/39,055 is 0.00005120983 or 0.005%

So if I remembered how to do probability correctly the chances of the Titanic sinking and the Notre Dame Cathedral starting on fire on the same calendar day are less than 1%. Technically too, if you wanted to go nuts with the math.. You would actually want to take the year the Cathedral was built and use that amount years because it could have started on fire then also.. Making it a possible outcome. 

So mathematically speaking (again if I am doing it right) it is highly unlikely that disaster and tragedies would happen on the same calendar day. 

I would like to see someone's take on this who is better at math or actually remembers the proper way to do this. 

It sucks that such a historical place was damaged like that but at least nobody was hurt. 

There have been more than two tragedies in between the Titanic sinking and the current one. You could pick and choose any tragedy you like. The probability of these two specific ones happening on the same day is low, but if it happened any other day it would have been this one and another one. The Titanic (and Lincoln being shot since it was also mentioned) are hardly the only events that have happened.  

I am aware of that.. I was calculating the probability of those two events in particular as a basis.

If you'd like to compile a list of all of the things that have happened on April 15 over the beginning of human history... Then take the number of things that happened and divide by the number of years in days.. I feel like your number is not going be much if at all higher..

The argument was what are the chances of these things happening on April 15, a particular day. Not what are the odds of bad things happening on any day.  

Let's start with the day that "lives in infamy" 

December 7th 1941, Pearl Harbor attack

December 7th 1946 - Deadliest hotel fire in US history, killing 119

December 7th 1983 - Two airplanes crash on the runway in Madrid, killing 93

December 7th 1987, Pacific Southwest crashes in CA, killing 43

December 7th 1988, Armenian earthquake kills roughly 40,000

All in a much shorter time span. 

I am Catholic and this is horrible, not just for the history, but for what it stands for in the Church. However, to pick out certain events to try to say that it is crazy that untied events happen on the same day in various years is a bit of a farce. 

Having been to Notre Dame on numerous occasions, I am both sadden and blessed. Blessed of course to have been privileged enough to see this great wonder, a cathedral that is enriched by so much history, that is unquestionably symbolic in the Catholic faith. However, extremely saddened to see the fire which occurred yesterday, the cathedral itself was a sight to behold, breathtaking architecture, I am just so sad to hear about this honestly. 

Ok.. All I was saying was the mathematical improbability of these things happening on the same day. You gave 5 December 7th events over the course of 47 years or 17,755 days.. It still comes out to less than one percent that those 5 things should have happened on the same day. 

However you are correct... They did happen.

I am not saying it's crazy or anything. You used the phrase "more than likely" and all I was doing was actually seeing how likely it is mathematically and it would be unreasonable to think that things won't happen on the same day. Essentially left up to random chance. 

I never said your argument was unreasonable. All I am saying is... again mathematically speaking... That any series of events you can list over a period of time will still probably result in a "less than likely" percent outcome. However these these things happen regardless of the math. 

However, I think we've gone on long enough over this so I am done.
