Could you clarify some of your points for me? I have a few questions/comments.
Can you explain how having a small number of predetermined days in the year where I can't get killed takes away from the time and dedication that others put it? Is it just not being able to kill me whenever you want? If that's the case, then why can't you just shoot me on December 23rd? You still have that ability. Or the 22nd. Or the 21st. The only way you'd wait until the 24th/25th would be to use the fact that I have plans with my family/friends as a shield to hide behind, which is the element I'd like to see removed from the game.
This suggestion would not change this. No one is suggesting character revival or multiple lives.
Can you explain this to me? I guess you might be accurate in one sense: this would disincentivize people from attacking on a holiday perceived as more popular, since there'd be a fear that too many high priority targets would be unable to be killed. But disincentivizing a holiday attack is why I'm making this suggestion in the first place. Outside of holidays/popular days where people have advanced plans with friends/family, I don't see how wars would really be affected here, as long as you avoid that small handful of days (which, again, is the point of this suggestion). For the 98% of the year that is made up of'normal' days, how would this change careful planning and execution of wars at all, nevermind 'entirely'? If it's one person's random birthday and they're safe for the day, you prepare for the war exactly the same and you execute it exactly the same... there's just one target that you discover you can't hit. And so you proceed the exact same way you would if one of your hitters wackbacked. You'd wipe out everyone around the missed target, and if they return before they're pro is up they get a chance to return fire as you hunt them down and (most likely) kill them. If they don't return when their pro is up, you just shoot at them again. In short, I think this would really mess up planning a war on a holiday (which is the point), but barely affect it on other times.
I have a fundamental disagreement with this statement, because I'm worried that holiday attacks have the potential to become an even bigger pattern than they already are. If you say "If I want to sacrifice my Christmas to play MR I should be allowed to do so", then you have my 100% agreement. Do your thing and live your life however you see fit. But what that statement also means is that you want the right to sacrifice your Christmas and the Christmas of dozens/hundreds of other people to start a war, probably because you're hoping the chaos of peoples' holiday plans gives you a tactical advantage. Everyone who has been in the situation of a holiday war has had to choose between the game they play and their holidays/families. If wars happened every few weeks, this wouldn't matter. But they happen so rarely now that you have people building accounts for months and put in a position where every damn holiday they're on their phone trying to coordinate pro shots and making strategic decisions. If this develops into a pattern, as seems to be the case, a lot of people are going to decide that the game isn't worth it. After all, why would you invest money and/or time into a game where you know other people are just going to repeatedly ruin your holidays? Some people might not care about that and find it fun, but I think the majority of people would be really turned off from the game as it kept happening.
True, but we are not criminals. We're people playing a game. Many mafia members are horrible, brutal, ruthless people. Is that the goal here for the player community? To make us brutal and ruthless lawbreakers in our real lives? Yes, it's fine to make character/game decisions as a horrible, brutal, ruthless person. Go for it. Kill everyone. Slaughter your rivals and laugh at them in the streets. But how one plays the game should not have a consistent negative impact on the real lives of the players.
You're entitled to your opinion here; I have no problem with you professing your preference for how you'd like to play. If the option of dying or killing during only 98% of the year as opposed to 100% ruins things for you, that's your prerogative.
People can die at any moment. Crises can happen on holidays. People die on Christmas. I've had family members die or get hospitalized during family gatherings. As you said, that's life. But in this case, I think we can improve on life and make a game that is supposed to be fun and engaging a more rewarding experience for the player community.
This isn't an argument; this is you saying what you enjoy the most about the game and telling people that their own preferences are wrong. I wouldn't equate babysitting with making sure a handful of days every year aren't derailed by some asshole intentionally starting a war on a holiday. Is it more 'adult' to say that you're willing to potentially sacrifice any day, all year with family and friends to play MR?
"We've always done it this way before" is a shit argument. Just because something is a tradition doesn't mean it's good. If this argument was true, the game wouldn't have any changes at all. It seems like your basic point is that the ability to die at literally any moment is more satisfying and fulfilling than the idea of people being able to protect themselves for 2% of the year where they have really important holiday plans with family/friends, weddings, or whatever else is essential to them. If that's how you feel, you have a right to your opinion. I believe differently, and I'm exercising my right to advocate for that change. Squishy, if this is being seriously considered by the administration, then you of course have the right to implement it yourself if you decide it would benefit the game. If you're unsure, however, I would suggest surveying the game population on whether this is something they'd like to see- perhaps an announcement poll that appears on login or a mail with a link to a survey? If this idea were to get rejected by the game's population, then I withdraw the suggestion. But it's my earnest belief that this minor change would benefit and be approved by the community as a whole. |

I just want to throw in my two cents in the idea GavinByrne presented. I believe it to be a very positive thing for the game as a whole if players had a peace of mind that they could turn their attention away from war for 24 hours twice a year. |

Sure, let me break this down for you. It is true that I might view this game very differently than many, and that's okay in every respect whether you agree or disagree with me. I just saw this suggestion and compelled to put my two cents in. If people don't like it such as yourself, that's totally fair. You even answered some of my points for me. I meant not disrespect in my post. We are two adults disagreeing on a game topic. Nothing malicious.
As you said yourself this is a tactical decision. I have lead many wars. I sometimes purposefully choose to begin a confrontation on a holiday because I know that people are likely more busy. A lot of people before me used this method as well. Why? Because it's smart. I make sure that my peoples are free at X time and we go. This isn't because I hate holidays. It's only because this is the most strategically sound way to operate. Why take that away? It just doesn't make sense to me. War planners since the dawn of time have used this to their advantage. I will always be against any suggestion that takes away any level of strategy. To me, it's one of the free form and beautiful parts of this game and always has been. I personally value reason, logic, and strategy above all else. That's just me.
The point above and this are one in the same to me. It would take away from planning and point of doing it on a holiday. As for non-holiday "safehouse" protections I think it takes away from a grand strategy. When I'm lining someone up to kill them I'll often try to find out when their birthday is, when they are going on vacation, when they are planning to be away in general. If they could just safehouse themselves for a week while they are gone that strategy is gone entirely. Am I am monster? Yeah, 100%. I've been called worse. That's winning to me. Many of the best players to ever grace this game have used this time and time again. Part of the beauty of MafiaReturns is outsmarting people. That's politics and war at it's highest level. The Great Game as many call it.
I am going to have to couple this in with a few of your other points. I'll do my best to be concise. I am not asking anyone to sacrifice their holiday for a war. It is as much their choice what they do on a holiday as it is mine. If I launch a war on Christmas that's my call. Whether they log in and defend themselves is totally up to them. I could see why a lot wouldn't see it as worth it, and that's 100% okay, just as much as it is mine if I want to spend 16 hours on Christmas Eve murdering people. We all have tough choices to make. I don't see why we would limit the tough choices people have to make here. At the end of the day it comes down to how you value your time. If you value your account more than Christmas, great. If you don't, great. That's just how it goes.
I really thought with you being such an avid Role Player that you would understand where I was coming from. We are criminals speaking from an in game sense. Everything suggested would effect how the game is played on the grand scale as I've stated above, where you play a character, a mafioso at that. Not calling you out or anything. I just thought if any of my points would have transcended our very large differences in opinion, this would be the one.
This pertains directly to the safehouses idea. I have a really off the wall concept that not everyone will understand with things seemingly being very PC. You don't want to get shot on your birthday? Don't tell everyone your birthday. Don't want to get shot on vacation because your on vacation? Don't tell everyone your going on vacation. That's your best defense. Why add in a feature that physically protects people when they can't even protect themselves? How many times could you use a safehouse per account? Per year? These are muddy waters to me. I know that I can be viewed as eccentric, maybe even mean. This is just how I see this game and what I feel brings life to the game. We can 100% differ on opinion. I just have some major issues. As Dalora has said once these things start going into the game it's hard to find where it stops. Ramadan lasts for an entire month and is celebrated by 1.8 billion people. I can name many different holidays that might not immediatly come to mind that would have to be implemented for it to be fair across the board. Are we going to turn off shooting for 30 days out of respect for those players of the Muslim faith? |

Just to be clear I don't want this to sound like me throwing my hands up and stomping my feet, saying if this goes in "I quit". It's never like that. If Squishy decided to implement any and all of these changes I would of course roll with the changes just like everyone else. I am not such a child to where I would just walk away because I disagree with changes or concepts. |

My guess, seeing the length of your reply and not having yet read it, is that we're probably going to continue our fundamental disagreement on this issue, which is obviously fine. However, I agree with this 100%. I think the whole point of the suggestions forum is to have a spirited debate on suggestions, and I'm quite content to say my piece as best as I can and let the people/administrators decide. I'll try to respond to some of your points, but I think we've both had multiple opportunities to make our case and I don't want to repeat myself too much, so unless you have any specific comments/questions I'll probably let things lie.
Earlier in this post, someone questioned why the community didn't just solve this issue ourselves and set a standard of not attacking on holidays; this is why. Because I agree with you that this is absolutely a smart tactical decision. You get your side together and everyone knows it's coming. You fire off your first volley, and the other side has to scramble even more than usual because people have plans. This is also the fault line for our disagreement here, and why I don't think there's any common ground. Attacking on a holiday is the smart thing to do, because you're forcing the people on your side to choose between the game and their real life. For everyone on the opposing side who says "I just can't log in right now, this other stuff is too important to me", you benefit. Personally, I think it's the right strategic move to attack on the holidays, but a bad business decision for the game itself and something that frustrates/drives away players. Why would I spend 6 months building a monster account so I can killed in the middle of Thanksgiving dinner? And then I get killed 30 days later during Christmas? I'm not saying that we should schedule wars for times where they're convenient. Wake everyone up at 5 AM and launch a sneak attack. Murder everyone in their sleep. That's fair, and that's how the game is played. But I think when something is good strategy but bad for the community, the admins should address it.
Again, I think this is just our fundamental disagreement. My diagnosis of something that's wrong with the game is "People are trying to spend time with their families on Christmas, and players are intentionally forcing the player base into a difficult, potentially detrimental decision- and you're saying "Yea that's the point!" Are you going to be "winning" less if you shoot people on a random Tuesday?
No, when you attack on a holiday, you're asking people to either sacrifice their holiday or sacrifice their account/crew to you. And again, that's tactically sound. I just don't think it's a good look for the game when one of condition of playing "The Great Game" is to force a choice where during Christmas dinner you're sitting on her toilet pretending to have food poisoning so you can organize pro shots for you and a couple other people. And oh yea, Grandma dies two months later. And at the funeral you're wondering why your mind was never really present during that Christmas dinner. Cheap emotional ploy, yes. Bad pathos argument... fine. But it's possible. You're doing the smart tactical thing by forcing people to choose between family/holiday plans and the game. I'm saying a game that consistently forces its user base to make those shitty decisions is going to have a lot of people leave it. Or maybe they play, but they just don't invest/engage as much because screw it I just got killed 3 holidays in a row. I'd argue both of those things are bad for the game.
If the majority of the site really says "this game is worth more to me than Christmas or my family" on a very small number of preselected days, then I'd be shocked. This is a game; it's something we're supposed to be doing for fun. Putting people in shitty real life scenarios isn't fun.
Honestly? I'd mostly agree with you here. I've made some leadership decisions based on how my character would see things. But game decisions are made based on the world of the game. The different here if you attack me trying to use Christmas as a shield, you're not just messing with Gavin Byrne and his family; you're missing with Keats and his family. The game style/setting shouldn't apply to the impact on RL, which is what you're doing when you choose to attack on a holiday.
Honestly? This might surprise you but I agree with you 100% here. I think this is strategy, which is why my original proposal only covered certain days. I've logged into MR on vacation to make it seem like I'm active, and I've sure as shit never told anyone my birthday unless I knew I'd be around that particular night. But here's the thing: we don't get to choose Christmas/Christmas Eve. Or Thanksgiving. Or Easter. Or Independence Day. If you wanted my two cents? I'd probably just disable wack for those five days because you can't choose them. They just happen, and since everyone knows they're happening it's less strategy and more like a shotgun blast assuming people have plans. One thing that I do want to make clear is that I think this could be horrible with overuse- and I tried to make this clear in the original post. You quote Dalora as "once these things start going into the game it's hard to find where it stops" and you use the 30 days of Ramadan as an extreme example. This is a classic use of the slippery slope fallacy. Does any logical human being really think we're turning off wack for a month? No. Ask yourself this question: When would I plan an attack to take advantage of the holiday? My guess is that you'd say Christmas Eve/Christmas Day the most. Thanksgiving and New Year's Eve to a lesser extent. Maybe Easter on the tier below, along with Independence Day? 7 days of being able to safelist yourself results in approximately 2% of the year. And almost half of those are in the same week! And by the way, it's not like doing that would eliminate any negative consequences. If I go on vacation for 7 days and leave myself safelisted the whole time, I could very well log back in and find out my whole crew is dead. In fact, if I've been sloppy with the info and choose to use my days ahead of time (and I only get 7 for the whole year on my player account, not each character), then I'm totally prevented from logging in for those 7 days (if we use Squishy's system of selecting 7 days in advance where you're protected but can't log in). Again, many players might not even use these days to make sure they can always respond to threats, etc., which is fine. And if you can get the info of someone's birthday or vacation and find out they used one of their safelist/protection days, you can wipe out everyone around them knowing they can't do shit. In other words, this doesn't eliminate strategy. It just modifies it to discourage people from launching wars on 3-4 days, while presenting new strategies to use.
Honestly, this is problem why Squishy's suggestion is ultimately better than mine, which I acknowledge now after pondering/writing my response to you. My blanket wack disabling for X days will result in a crazy debate about which holidays deserve to be safe. Instead, I'd like to modify my suggestion to reflect the ideas of Squishy: To quote him:
Additional suggestions: Rather than policing the creation of new master accounts to abuse this system, each character get 3-4 days to use, which can be reloaded if the character lives 365 days. Anyways, I think I've rambled enough on this subject. Astra, you are of course entitled to your opinion and I doubt I can change your mind, but I do think your points have refined my thinking so I thank you for it. Appreciate the good discussion. |

Like you Gavin I think we have made our points and don't really need to elaborate further. We don't need to sit here and take turns beating a dead horse as much fun as it is. The points have been made, the values have been expressed. There isn't any reason for us to repeat ourselves when you are correct, we aren't going to convince one another of anything. We have fundamental differences in how we see the game/how the game should be played. That's entirely okay. That is what drives this game forward. If everyone agreed on everything MR wouldn't be as much fun as it is. We can both pull out extreme excuses to validate our points but fuck it, people get the picture amirite? I am curious as to why this all came up? Over the small dust up on easter? Everyone I spoke to that day was fucking pumped. Granted that is a very small cross section of the community but still. I still don't think that this is a large enough problem to where Squishy has to step in. We have had many, many holidays where absolutely nothing has happened. I'd venture to say the vast majority. Moving on from the points that have already been beaten to death with our word sticks. I wholeheartedly disagree with their being a "safehouse" or "vacation mode" as explained above. But just to play the devils advocate I'd like to add something to Squishy's ideas. IF vacation mode/safe hosue is implemented I think there should be some restrictions on how guns are handled when using the safe house. I'm sorry if this has been brought up already. My head is in 10 different places right now.
Again, I'm not a huge fan of the idea but those are my thoughts. I agree with everything Squishy outlined coupled with my own. I'd be in favor of the safe house having even more severe repercussions but I fear I already sound like something of an asshole. |

Like this immensely, I died on Easter and didn't find out for 3 days because I was on vacation. Horrible, stupid use of a holiday by some nasty players.
My choices would be--
New Years Easter July 4 Thanksgiving Christmas Eve/Christmas Any days of similar importance in countries other than mine (US) |

This post was a good read with many good ideas. (Granted, skimmed a few so may be saying what someone else suggested.) A simple solution would be to let Squishy and/or help desk know the DAYS (not hours) you will be gone and they can throw you in jail for that amount of time. (As far as I know you can't die in jail ..... however Izzy, what a great concept .... shanked while you were sleeping????) I would put a time limit on it .... something like at least 3, but no more then 10 days. I pick ten because some have to travel far, but we only give folks 7 days to find a new crew. No you can NOT do petties or felonies or save your DFP. Keep it as jail currently is. Example: "Izzy, I will be gone X amount of time for (reason), please put me in jail." In real life, whatever you have out there is open for anyone, but you'll be save. |

Honestly I would really like the jail idea, granted Izzy would have to do it on a case by case basis. But this would really help people like me who may have to travel a lot or simply won't have access to their phone. And I also vote that once you give izzy your dates that no matter what you're in jail for those days. If you come back early oh well, you're still locked up. This way it makes people not as likely to want to abuse the feature. |

Although at a fundamental level I don't entirely agree with this implementation. But I'm also tired of people being assholes and starting wars on Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving when they could easily have done it a day or two before/after instead. I'd prefer to have those 3 major holidays protected so that nobody HAS to come on MR that day whether they are a player or an admin. Hell I'd even be down for adding New Years to this list. I don't want to see people able to pick and choose what days throughout the year they can be 'safe' though. I'd find it to be chaotic if there were just random days throughout the year where people were safe. If that was the way this leaned I'd say -1. Let people enjoy time with their families or travel without worrying about logging in. +1 (if it's implemented for a few specific holidays each year.) |
