Riddle Me This Started by: Morte_Rossa on Jun 25, '19 14:38

On a little street corner in South Philly, Olympia set a chair down. It was a little wobbly and unsteady because the sidewalks were cracked, but she shrugged her shoulders, taking a seat. Once she sat, she unzipped her purse and gathered up the papers that she had put in there earlier that morning, then cleared her throat.

"Listen everyone!" She said to those passing by her. "I have an idea of a game; a fun event if you may. But I'd like to gauge interest first in this."

She watched as people slowed down to a stop around her, and she continued. "I'm sure you guys and gals are all very smart. I'd love to ask you guys riddles.. Trivia questions.. Stuff like that. And to the person that solves it goes a prize. Would anyone be interested in that kind of event? Just to liven up the mood a little and make things a little less stressful. Thoughts?"

Apparently I've forgotten my own name. So let's try that again.

On a little street corner in South Philly, Morte_Rossa set a chair down.

Keats grinned as Morte_Rossa seemed to forget her name. He tried not to be self-centered, but he did tend to have that effect on women.

"The riddle game is one of humanity's oldest ways to pass the time, isn't it? I'd gladly participate in a riddle or a trivia question if you'd like to pose one. Although, frankly, I suspect that with the prevalence of libraries..."

Keats glanced down the road, noticing a line of libraries; truly people going On that Line would ruin a lot of the fun of the riddle game or trivia questions, since they could just look up the answers.

"... still, I'm always up for, as you said, livening up the mood?"

He grinned as he leaned on the lamppost near the woman.

Report Post Tip

Morte listened to the man speak, trying not to swoon or do anything crazy as he leaned against the lamppost, grinning towards her. He had a certain air about him that caused a flutter in the stomach, but she was very sure he had that affect on every woman he crossed paths with.

Nodding, she cleared those thoughts before saying, "I would have to agree on the libraries, and to that I say.. I just hope people keep this all in good fun and don't ruin it by cheating, you know? I would be able to see them exiting the libraries before they answer.. Hopefully."

She laughed, continuing, "But, Karma will get those that do cheat. In one way or another.."

Pausing, she thought back to a fire last week that burnt down the house of a man that stole her whole life savings that she stupidly kept in her purse, before she learned to trust banks.

She snickered before saying, "I do love riddles and trivia and things of that nature. I'm glad to see someone else enjoys them too! So.. I suppose I will get started then. And maybe a few others will try to take part. If this doesn't work how I'm hoping it does, then maybe I can try something else."

Straightening out one of the pages in her hands, she said loudly, "I will start this out with a fairly easy riddle.

I can only live where there is light, but I die if the light shines on me. What am I?"

She looked around then, waiting for someone to give her the correct answer.

Keats nodded.

"Well, you have my word that I'll be playing an honest game."

He relaxed against the lamppost, looking down at the ground in thought before smirking.

"My best guess for yours would be... a shadow. It needs light to exist, but direct light would dispel in."

Keats raised a curious eyebrow at Morte_Rossa; he thought that he was right, but he didn't want to be presumptuous.

She smiled when he said he would be honest, and then continued to listen until he had answered fully.

Sighing, she said, "Well that was faster than I thought it would be. Guess I went too easy on you!"

Laughing, she then continued by saying, "I will now give you the prize you have earned by answering correctly, and being an honest person."

Reaching into her purse, she pulled out a small roll of cash, slowly standing from her wobbly seat. She walked over to Keats, shaking his hand lightly before passing him the money, saying, "Congratulations. There's your prize, Sir. Also, pleasure to meet you."

Turning, she returned to her chair, slowly seating herself again.

"I think this next one will be a trivia question," she said thoughtfully. "Might throw people for a loop. I suppose we shall see!

When there are two full moons in the same month, what is the second one called?"

Report Post Tip

Keats bowed his head in thanks.

"Perhaps, as an additional reward, I could ask for your name, Miss?"

He listened carefully to Morte_Rossa

"And shall I wait to see if others answer? Or continue trying to impress you?"

Report Post Tip

She blushed, laughing lightly at her own misstep, before saying, "I do suppose I did leave that part out, huh? My name is Morte_Rossa. But you can call me Morte, or Rossa.. Or whatever you please."

She raised her eyes back up to his before saying, "You can wait if you'd like to, or go ahead and give the correct answer.. Maybe the competition will make these other folks pipe up. Or maybe it won't and people will be too scared, and you'll be the only one winning these prizes I'm giving out!"

Report Post Tip

"I think," smirked Keats at Morte_Rossa"that I prefer to call you Rossa. Morte, if I recall correctly, means death- which is almost never good. "Red", however, seems equally good or bad. Blood, sure, is bad. But there's also redness in a blush, for example. And, speaking of colors, I believe your answer is a blue moon."

Report Post Tip

She gave a slow smile to Keats, feeling her cheeks color again, the same red he just spoke of, as she said, "Rossa it is then. And you? What might I call you?"

After realizing he did actually give the correct answer, she said, "Blue Moon it is! You're one smart guy, huh? So now, the prize for that answer."

Pulling a large gold item out of her purse, she said, "And it is this. A credit for your troubles. A gold coin if you may."

As she handed it to him she said, "spend it wisely, as I'm sure you will! And with that, I will continue on to the next trivia question. Hopefully we will get some more action over here on this street corner.."

A homeless man sitting against a wall behind her snickered and she scoffed, "Not that kind, pervert. So.. The question is..

Stratus, Cirrus and Cumulus are types of what?"

Report Post Tip

"Keats. John Keats. Thank you for the gold coin, Rossa- can't let my education entirely go to waste, eh?"

Grinning, Keats continued to lean and listen to see if anyone else would answer. He heard the man snicker, and Keats could only shrug innocently.

"I mean... you never know."

Report Post Tip

"It's a pleasure to know your name, John Keats," she said to him. "Always great to meet new people, especially handsome ones. But.. I'd like to think that if anyone on this corner were to do anything, they would take it into the privacy of their home. Or at least a hotel room."

She winked over at him before looking around at the faces of those surrounding her, wondering if anyone else would soon chime in with an answer, or if this smart, charming man by the light pole would be the sole winner of the day.

Roger walks out noticing a man creeping from a street corner, he tips his hat to the fella, before noticing the quizmaster.

"I believe the answer you are looking for is clouds, I could be mistaken here."

He had a feeling he was dead wrong, but a guess never hurt a soul.

Report Post Tip

ZR came in as soon as he had heard there is a riddle game being played in the streets. He barely caught the last question being given to the crowd and had no clue what was being asked. Just as he was about to give up and walk away he heard something, a sudden voice filled his head and startled him quite abruptly. The voice was strangely familiar and despite the fact that there was no one in his vicinity Zebrish heard the words loud and clear.

"...a guess never hurt a soul".

Emboldened by the sudden encouraging advice ZR filled up his lungs and shouted as loud as he could manage:

" EIGHT! THE CORRECT ANSWER IS EIGHT!"

Report Post Tip

Morte_Rossa was happy to see two new faces arriving, one of which, Kinky_Roger, gave the correct answer, and the other, ZebrishRedd, whom gave a completely wrong, but wonderful, guess. She smiled, giggling at the second answer before turning to the man who had answered first.

"You are correct!" She said to him excitedly. "And, you have a familiar face indeed. Glad to see a friend around here taking part. So you guessed well! And now here's your prize."

She handed him a small piece of paper that said

You have earned a common perk of your choice.

"So what'll you choose?" She asked him curiously.

Report Post Tip

Roger looks at the piece of paper and thinks a little before smiling at Morte_Rossa.

"I'm not sure what to pick my friend, so maybe you could surprise me?"

He looks around a little.

Report Post Tip

Listening to the young man, she smiles and says, "Well I think I can manage to surprise you possibly. So let's just see then."

She reaches into her purse, pulling out another sheet of paper that says which item she has decided to gift to Kinky_Roger.

"And that'll be gifted to you right away!" She exclaimed. "So.. Onto the next question now. We'll go with a riddle this time!

I am slim and tall. Many find me desirable and appealing. They touch me and I give a false good feeling. Once I shine in splendor, but only once and then no more. For many I am 'to die for'. What am I?"

Report Post Tip

Roger smiles and thanks Morte_Rossa for his prize.

"Thank you miss, I sadly got no clue what to guess on your next riddle, so hopefully someone else can pull that one off."

He blends in with the crowd, hoping someone else knew this answer.

Report Post Tip

She nods towards Kinky_Roger as he sinks into the crowd that had gathered around her on the street corner and said, "That's okay! Surely one of these others will be able to figure it out! I'm sure we'll have a winner soon, and the prize for this one is gonna' be good!"

Report Post Tip

Keats tilted his head, considering the riddle. Unlike the others, nothing sprung to mind here. He repeated it to himself under his breath.

"I am slim and tall. Many find me desirable and appealing. They touch me and I give a false good feeling. Once I shine in splendor, but only once and then no more. For many I am 'to die for'. What am I?"

He frowned.

Possible answers.

Himself? Probably too specific.

A candle? Fireworks? It seemed to work for the beginning and the end, but not with the bit about touching and giving false good feelings...

Shit, this was a tough one.

"Jeez, I'm stumped here."
