The LAPS office has been moving slow lately seeing as we’ve had to delay the release of this issue since one of our editors came down with a cold and she wasn’t able to finish her piece in time. We definitely weren’t going to allow her to come into work anyway despite her wanting to.

But it’s okay. Slow and steady still wins the race.

We present to you Week #4 of LAPS. As always, constructive critcism is welcomed and we also wish that we weren't the only active newspaper in the business. Where's our friendly competition?

In which we discuss recent events!

A hopeful young gangster’s words.

A hopeful message for those who lost loved ones in the September war was spoken last week by DominicG of Johnny_Cakes’ Southside Construction Co. who was a gangster at the time. Titled Building a better tomorrow, Dominic gives out a heart-warming message for those deeply affected by the violent events that had occurred. He tried not to linger too much on what happened but more on what can be done to “build something new”. While he paid homage to the people who made sacrifices in the war, his focus was on how the community can move forward. Even when everything appears to be at rock bottom. 

No one said it would be simple to just move on from what happened, but Dominic definitely sheds light on building “new stronger bonds” and taking the chance to rebuild one's life. Dominic kept a cool and calm composure as he spoke to the crowd and finally finished with "tomorrow the real work begins" which was bold and inspiring at the same time. It definitely speaks to those who are still recovering from the traumas of the recent war and it also provides words of encouragement for anyone who may be lacking in motivation to keep up the mafia hustle.

Dominic wholeheartedly came out to express his honest thoughts and it was definitely different from how another person might have reacted. Usually, or in most cases after a war has happened, grudges may be formed and new enemies may be made. The speech gave people another outlook on life. It held no negativity and just a lot of empathic words. 

With his soapbox speech, it attracted quite a lot of attention and many other people had a lot to say as well. Let's check it out. 

WednesdayAddams, rest in peace, took a break from sharperning axes to approach Dominic as she was inspired by wanting an opportunity for the future. 

I do hope that this is the beginning of a less dreary time. It seems I stumbled upon these streets while they were in utter chaos. I like chaos. But I also like crafting and building things and then breaking them down and... well, it’s hard to continue to enjoy what I like to do if everyone is dropping dead around me. It brings cops and unwanted attention.

After staying lowkey and out of the spotlight for a while, Charlie__Pavanno came out as well to express his thoughts. 

Indeed DominicG. We enter a new era and I am excited to see what comes out in the next few weeks. How it is going to be shaped? Time will tell. This is surely going to be an interesting time.

It is a sensitive time right now for many of us, but like DominicG, we should also look to the positive side and create something worthwhile out of it. 

In lieu of Big Dick Energy.

On the 13th of September, Don Mikhail stumbled into the streets once again to talk about the change of his family name from Big Dick Energy to The Soviet State. It may have gained a few laughs from the community, but as Mikhail said, it is "something more respected" and most people probably would not be able to take him seriously if he kept up his big dick energy. It will be missed, but it may come back again. There is always a right time for that. 

Recently he has been making a lot of street appearances and that shows that Wayne taught Mikhail well while he was his right hand. Just like Wayne, he communicates with his people and is very well spoken to his audience. Like father, like son. He goes on to even reveal a little about himself as the "type of guy who likes to crack jokes" but no doubt when the time comes to be serious, he shows just how headstrong he can be. From his words, it is clear that he is now thinking long term as he informs people how he wants them to perceive the organization he is leading. What values does he hold? He says that his "organization is not going to turn away any unfavorable bloodlines" in a tone that was clear as crystal. 

He also goes on to state that his family has no more space to bring in more recruits, but encouraged people to keep an eye on more people that will be getting authed in the future. That also goes without saying, there are many other crews available for recruiting and should be approached as well. At the end of his speech he officially announced that the new name of his family The Soviet State is in effect. We say goodbye to big dick energy and a warm hello to Mikhail's future endeavours and we wish him the best of luck.

Homer wanted nothing to do with that and paid it no mind as he gives his positive response.

Hopefully Mikhail is not annoyed at how many times we've mentioned him in the paper but we sure do enjoy whenever he comes out to the streets!

Fake news: Booogie buys Nikki Osavkovska out.

Someone indicated that Nikki Osavkovska can be brought? Let's see what New York's very own Booogie had to say about this. He starts off by referring to last week's issue of LAPS and how he was mentioned in it. It was nothing bad or personal but we had reported on his response to a recent discussion. In an upbeat and egotistical tone, he says that it is "the best part of the paper". We can't confirm that right now but when one of our editors saw it, she had a giggle and appreciated the self confidence he had in himself. The real reason why he thought he could buy Nikki Osavkovska out with $0.99 is because she had responded to a business proposition he had, which she admitted that it is totally her fault and that she should have not involved herself in such clownery. 

For those who are even more confused than before, he basically wanted to be "the only source of such entertainment" to provide interviews. However, Nikki holds no animosity and if he would like to, maybe even collaborate with her sometime on a future project. Even though she thought he was kidding about the $0.99, she reportedly saw the cheque on her table attached to a business card with the words 'Billionaire Boys Club: Voice of the Mafia Elite'.

Letting the money talk.

As the title suggests, Kuku let the money talk as he came out to the streets and asked wealthy mafia men and women to answer the question "Why doesn't anybody loan shark any more?". Loansharking in the mafia is a dirty business but it gets the job done. Kuku went on to call out the wealthy people of this world as he appeared to be hinting at the fact that they could be loaning money and potentially making millions.

As many of us know, money runs the underground world. Whoever told you different may have been lying. It provides drug money, bribing money, bodyguard money and food on the table. The economy is very tight right now and funds are running low especially for those who had used up all their money in the recent war. 

Here is how people responded. 

Booogie starts off strongly, 

Don’t have time for people’s leaders to cry when I shoot people who don’t want to pay.

LeviJones emphasized on the issue of trust and how reliable the person is to repay the loan. It's never a good time to chase people up regarding this stuff. It's embarassing not only for the person who borrowed the loan but also for the one who gave it. 

Maybe what's needed is a "review council" who will review the borrower and determine if he/she is worthy. 

Reasons of the decline of loanshaking was also expressed by Mikhail. He firstly talks about how in these situations there is no hard evidence to back up the loan as you only have someone's word. Which seems to not be very convenient at all especially when someone goes in hiding and refuses to pay or suddenly disappears. He also brought up gambling and how that negatively affects the loansharking business. He finishes off with,

To me there is no good way to loan money anymore other than just to your friends. And you can't charge your friends interest...

Kuku flew away.

As some of the community are aware, or maybe everyone is - Kuku was locked up in the cage for a short while. This consequence was handed down by the city hall due to the useless grafitti he did on various buildings, which would be considered spam. He talked about his recent prison experience which can be read here. For a short time there was a campaign called #FreeKuku and many people supported it. He talked about how he was grateful for the suport. In his prison diary he wrote, "I hold no grudge against my assailant, kidnapper and denier of freedom".

As delusional as he may be sometimes, deep down it seems like all he wants is freedom. Sadly, he got that in the worst way: Few days after, he came out to the streets again. His opening line suggested that he was ready to lay down his burdens in the coffin. "I feel in the mood for a duel... I will refuse nobody."

Here is how Viktor reacted to his request, who was also the one to win victory in the duel. 

I woke up feeling dangerous.

We don't have an obituary section currently, but we do want to wish that the next of Kuku's bloodline comes to these shores again. And if he has returned, hopefully he is doing alright. Rest in peace Kuku. He finally flew away. Not just from the cage he was locked in but from the world we live in today.

COMMUNITY TALK
Giving people the chance to be heard.

Last week we were able to speak with Don JohnWalton about his future plans for Seattle and we also reflected on the recent war. This week’s issue is about to be blessed by the words of Don Alexus and we couldn’t be more excited for what she had to reveal to us. And before we get into the meat of the conversation, we just want to note that we always want to make sure that every interviewee is comfortable and that they can speak their mind however they want to.

The first thing we wanted her to do is to give us her general thoughts about the current state of the mafia world. Here is what she gave us:

Peace time is always a good time.  The rebuilding of Detroit is moving along nicely with the strong help from Dillinger taking over 12th Street and Flexx-Mitchell stepping up to take over the rebuilding of Corktown.  I was very impressed with the collective efforts of the new Council to get things back in order.

As we started to talk more on a deeper level, we were given an honest answer on how she survived the war.  

First of all it was hard getting over that fact that you were warring against friends.  We all had to quickly come to the mutual understanding that it was strictly business and nothing personal. Rest in peace to all the fallen.

I can’t say it wasn’t challenging. But with the help of some very loyal and trusted people, the expertise of some very knowledgeable planners, I was able to survive.

We can only imagine how hard it must have been in the war, but we’re glad you’re here with us today and making excellent progress. Next we asked if she expects to be Godfather soon.

Alexus had to laugh about that one and thought to herself yeah if i live long enough.

Holding the Godfather rank is the highest honour in this thing of ours, of course someone only dreams to achieve.

I can’t say I expect to be.  I can only say I will work hard to achieve it. It would be definitely be an honour.

She has built a strong reputation for herself and her family. We asked Alexus, who seems to have many connections in this thing of ours: On the first day you entered the life of crime, did you ever expect to be where you're at today?

I can’t really say I did.  I entered this life of crime when I was about 12 years old when I shot and killed a man for putting his hands on me.  As a young woman who has paid her dues and set goals for herself, I do expect to be where I am today.

Finally, to wrap up the interview, we wanted to ask: Who's someone you really admire in this community of mobsters, and why? Her response was soul-stirring. No favouritism included.

I admire all those who lost their lives and the ones who survived.  It was a long heartbreaking and challenging war we went through.  I admire all the next of kin who has put the war behind them and picking up the pieces and moving on. I admire the victors of the war, moving on with no hard feelings.

Another successful and interesting interview. And also the first lady we’ve had the pleasure of interviewing. We could definitely see that from such a young age, she seemed to be destined for a high ranked position in the underground society. Also the interview hopefully allowed people to get an inside look of her mind, especially those who have never talked to her before. She wasn’t hesitant at all to let us interview her and we’re deeply grateful for that.

ASK NIKKI
Where I, Nikki Osavkovska, try to give helpful advice.

A good friend of mine, NotoriousBIG, asked me an interesting question last Saturday. It was about food. And while I do appreciate all the questions seeking recommendations for food recipes, I wonder if you guys really think I’m that reliable of a source. I’m not a chef and much to your surprise gentlemen, I don’t spend a lot of time in the kitchen.

Hi, can I have the recipe for the national dish of the Soviet Union?

When I imagined what Soviet cuisine would look like, I thought of meat dumplings, stuffed cabbage and bowls of borscht. And lucky me, I wasn’t far off. Unfortunately, I don’t think I could single out one dish since there are so many traditional Soviet food, but I have a delicious treat for all my cheese lovers out there. Have you ever heard of Syrniki? It is a very loved and popular dish of the Soviet Union. This dish is also known by another name that I can’t pronounce and starts with T but anywho, let’s get started! I bet you’re hungry.

Syrniki (Curd-Cheese Pancakes)

Makes 3 dozen pancakes, 4 servings

1 1/2 cups farmer cheese (if unavailable, you can substitute cottage cheese, blended to break up the curds, or ricotta or fromage blanc, but they will require a bit more flour)

• 3 large eggs
• 3 tablespoons sugar
• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
• Pinch baking soda
• Few drops lemon juice
• 3 to 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour (depending on the type of cheese used)
• Butter for frying
• Sour cream and berries, jam or compote for serving

Heat a heavy skillet over medium-low heat. Mix together the cheese, eggs, sugar and vanilla. Separately, mix together the baking soda and lemon juice and stir that in as well. Add enough flour to make a thick batter, slightly thicker than pancake batter (the exact amount will vary depending on the type of cheese used).

When the skillet has heated, melt a few spoonfuls of butter in it, and plop down heaping tablespoons of batter. The batter should sizzle slightly. If the batter is too runny to set in little pancakes, add additional flour. Cook until the underside is golden, and the top has dried out slightly and holes are beginning to poke through (this will just take a few minutes). Flip, and brown on the other side (the second side should take less time). Repeat with remaining batter, adding additional butter to the skillet as needed. Serve with sour cream and fresh berries.

Keeping up with the mobsters.

We decided to put our own spin on the question: Would you rather be the hero or the sidekick? Since we are mobsters and not superheroes, this week’s question for the community is: Would you rather be a crew leader or the RHM?

Not everyone has the same desire to pursue the life of a CL especially considering all the responsibilities that come along with it. However, some people don’t mind it, and they like it. We also thought it would be an interesting time to be asking this question since many will have reached that certain age where they can be promoted and start thinking more about their future. Let’s see what these people had to say:

Wise Guy Howie: "While it's always nice to receive the recognition of being a crew leader, my strengths and gameplay make me a very good RHM.  Being a successful crew leader requires continual networking and building of relationships within the game, and as the name suggests, being a leader of the family.  While I can lead when necessary, my preference is being a really good second in command, supporting my leader, and playing cheerleader for the family as it grows and develops."

Wise Guy KenoN: "Crew leader. I don't like being a hand at all; I've only served as a hand to very close friends. I've got lots of hand proposals in the past that I turned down."

to say you prefer being a CL to rhm tells me that youve been right hand more times than i can count on my hand. but on a serious note, how bad can it rly be?

Wise Guy FatalAffliction: "I would rather be the boss of the crew leader but I always say aim for the stars and don't look down =), but out of them two I’d choose RHM. I like to lay low."

ahh so is this the reason why more people prefer rhm to cl? its more lowkey? come on fatal we want to see you aim BEYOND the stars!

Wise Guy Savastano: "RHM. I don't think I'd be great at leading. Just like being part of a crew."

aww dont doubt yourself buddy. not everyone is the same and people adopt different leadership styles. hopefully one day you change your mind!

Earner Jordan: "I would rather be a RHM. Rather than lead, I would prefer to fill in as needed and take the time to teach the crew and develop activities for them. I've always said "A crew that plays together, stays together."

i really love this! camaraderie is excellent to have in a crew. but hey, you could lead AND teach the crew at the same time if youre a cl. eh?

After reading through all the pages carefully, Biggie took the newspaper with him and went over to Nikki's office.

"Hi Nikki, again you have delivered a good edition with good journalism. Looks like the Los Angeles Press Syndicate is here to stay."

Biggie gave Nikki a hug, left the office and walked back out onto the street again.​​​​​​​

Momma Rosa was under the weather so Shady volunteer to walk Victo.Jr.  to school.  On his way back he stopped by the local newsstand and picked up a copy to the Los Angeles Press Syndicate.

Once back at the HQs he poured himself a cup of coffee and sat down to read the paper.

It was very interesting, especially the article involving Alexus.

When he had finished reading, he wondered if Alexus had seen it yet.  He went into her office and handed her the newspaper.
