From Godfather to Goodfellas: Shifting to the 70s | Started by: Anton on Aug 23, '20 16:06 |
Are you more into Goodfellas, than the Godfather? More into Casino than Capone? More au fait with the 70s than the 30s?
Maybe we should update and kinda revamp this thing of ours?
YOUR THOUGHTS? |

I can't say whether I'm in favor of this change or not. On the one hand, I've been around here from the beginning and would hate to see such a fundamental change in the place that I call a second home. On the other hand, more people are familiar with the mafia era of the 60's and 70's due to there being more movies and literature centered around that era. The role play would probably be more interesting and exciting. I like the idea that the era could embrace players who identify with mafia types from different periods in time. That would certainly reflect the playing styles of the userbase. You have people who act more like old school, "4-pillars" type mobsters. Then you have the other (usually younger and newer) players whose knowledge of mafia history is limited only to the "Goodfellas" type of movies they have seen, and their RP style acts accordingly. In short...I don't know. It's an interesting idea to talk about and I'm anxious to hear the arguments of people both for and against it. Hopefully they can do so objectively and not let their feelings about Anton influence their viewpoint. |

One place I role played at years ago had the forum set up for role play like you mention. The main forum was only for the specific game theme. Here it would be the streets. It had other forums for specific genres or types of role play. Here the example would be the BD. I think this would work here just by adding another forum or couple forums based on the decades you mentioned.
You would not have to change the theme of the game because Mafia Returns doesn't specifically say it is 1930's, until you go to the streets. |

I am absolutely for it. People have been RPing their fedoras and pinstripe suits here for decades, it is so boring, let's make it a bit fresh again. |

I want this change to happen so that I beat a man to death with Atlantis by Donovan playing in the background

I made this suggestion quite a while ago here.
Seeing as the prohibition era is entering its centennial, and I still feel that most of the cultural memory of the mafia is in the 50s-80s (and late 90s-00s thanks to The Sopranos) I am completely on board with changing the era of the game as I think it would provide far more roleplay opportunities through the lowered barrier of entry for players. |

I like personally like this idea. I mean most of the RP is already outside of 1920s as we currently speak so the adjustment for folks wouldn't be that hard of a transition. I would like to think this idea would generate newer people and giving the userbase a nice boost. 100% for this so +1 from me. |

I think this would be a nice change. Even if it's not a huge hit, at least adding a forum for this might gain some traction. I like the idea of having something outside of the 30s. It seems most games are like this. |

I think changing the era of the game would make sense. More people know about this era of the mob, the RP would be better and it would make the obscene wealth a little closer to reality. |

I like this idea and what it brings. As mentioned previously the game has been stuck in a certain timeframe for e prolonged period of time and refreshing that will bring forward some new ideas and at some level much more exciting roleplay. +1 |

-1. Or maybe we all use that magic google thing and put some effort in. It’s really not that hard to stay in the 30s. Clearly no one does, but it would be nice if people at least tried. We might as well just toss away the 30s completely because no one seems to even care anymore. |

It took longer than I thought it would but, I finally figured out that I’d rather watch the world burn than deal with the idiots that inhabited this place. There was nothing left here other than random nobodies bitching and moaning that these streets should fast forward. Really, that all could have been avoided if someone put the bare minimum of effort in. These people wanted everything handed to them on a silver spoon though. They weren’t going to put the time or effort in. They were going to bitch and moan about how everything should be pushed ahead because they weren’t going to try and learn something new. It wasn’t all that hard to figure things out, they just didn’t want to try. That was unfortunately the way the world worked lately. “I’m too lazy, do it for me.” That’s what echoed through these streets. Where was the research? Where was any effort what so ever? I’ve lost track of how many people used terminology, used vehicles, used places, that weren’t around in the 30’s. We need to change things just because no one is willing to put any effort in? That seems like the ante-thesis of how things should be. It falls right in line with the way the world has been working lately. ”I don’t like this, you better change or ill bitch and moan and wear you down until you change things.” It’s sad, it’s pathetic. It really isn’t all that hard to learn new things, especially in the days of Siri and google. It’s all at your finger tips but very few even want to try. Seriously, how long does it take to google what vehicles or what buildings were around in the 30s? All of 45 seconds? How about we put effort into what we have instead of trying to force new eras onto everyone. |

That is the perfect reason. People don't care about the 30's anymore. The 30's are limiting and boring. Lets go to the 70's a much much better era. |

I must admit I’ve never partaken in role play mostly due to the era we are restricted to. So as a new player I can attest a period change would be more alluring.

As a returning player, one who started playing around 2009-2010 and one who enjoys RP'ing, changing eras would be so awesome. And easier for younger players to get into the game as well.
