Near Death Experience Started by: EdisonByers on Jan 05, '21 01:59

I've actually had several near death experiences.  Most recent one started out normal day, make coffee and head out to work.  I sip my coffee while i am driving from time to time and this one time I accidentally inhaled some and began coughing.  No big deal right?  guess again.  The coughing increase and I began to become concerned when it didn't cease like it normally would.  I realized I was in trouble and stated to slow down and was going to pull over to cough it out.  Next thing I knew I was up against a concrete pillar with my engine still running and wondering what just happened.  I realized what happened after a few seconds of clearing the cob webs and got the heck out of my truck.  The near death part came later.

After looking over my truck at the damage I saw this huge scrape across the windshield starting at about head high shooting straight up the glass.  After careful observation and critical thinking I realized it was the cross bar that supports a chain link fence.  It is a metal post that lays horizontal to support the fence vertically.

Had the windshield fail to stop that post, my head was directly in line with the scrapes and I'd be toast.  It would of impaled me.

What an awful experience that must have been.. Horrendeous.

Worst situation I have been in must have been was a hitchhike offered in Bolivia, which declined to take because I didn't trust it. In the end it turned out that there had been some abductions there in that period. But even then, no-one died, so I wouldn't call it a near death experience anyway..

Maybe a rock dropping from a waterfall at Ometepe? Not close enough either..

Guess I don't have any

When I was little kid I went to a a friend and before I go back home I injured my toe so I went to a mini market to buy some tissues to wrap my toe to stop the blood till I reach home, with my first step outside the market there was a super fast coming directly to me I was stunned at my place, the jeep crashed at the stone stairs that was less than 2 meters away from me.
I was lucky that these stairs was in front of me.

When I was around 17-18, I was driving on a moped on my way to my drivers’ school to get there I had to take a left turn on a big road that was infamous for having a high number of accidents every year and ended up getting hit by a van. Before taking the turn i came to a full stop and checked both sides, no cars were coming so i began to cross the road. While crossing a van driving at high speed exits the roundabout behind me, they hit the brakes and move into the opposite lane hitting me just before I finish crossing the road. Me and my moped slide for a few 100 meters before I let go and hit the ground. The moped and my helmet got totally damaged but luckily I managed to get away with just a moderate concussion.

So I don't have any personally but my sister just about got stomped by a horse real good (She still loves horses don't worry) and my brother ran a four wheeler through an electric fence...  Didn't really almost die as thankfully it was turned off but he got a nice slice across his neck!  Ok so it doesn't compare to any of your stories but dang!

2nd near death experience.

I use to work for a big chain restaurant as a night manager.  The drive was about an hour each way and I am usually a morning person and not a night owl.

I was recently promoted and I kept falling asleep at the wheel driving to and from work.  I got this hair brain idea to ride my 650 Yamaha to work instead thinking the wind would keep me awake, wrong.

One night after work I head home and I'm on the freeway and everything's going just fine and the next thing I know I wake up and realize I am off the freeway on the dirt part.  Instantly I am alert and didn't panic.  I was still traveling at full speed and I know not to hit the breaks to hard because on a bike you can get into a skid on dirt and wipe out so I decided to ease it back up onto the interstate.  I did exactly that.  I eased it back up onto the freeway and not 5 seconds after getting back onto the freeway I see the overpass.  Had I not woke up I would of slammed into that overpass at 60 mph.

I resigned from that position.

When I was a kid, the park down the street had a steep hill that my friends and I would ride down as fast as we could and at the bottom we'd stop sideways at the end to see who could make the longest tire mark. One day, I decided to go to the very top of the hill and peddled down as fast as I could, I was going to make the longest screech of the whole block. Once I hit the bottom, my handlebar barely nicked a post and it sent my handlebars wobbling, I tried to regain control, but it was too late, my front tire turned completely sideways and my bike stopped and I flew right over the handlebars and landed on the floor and slid for what felt like 50 feet. I thought I was going to die that day.

One time I was in the backroom of a Target (that's a big box store in the states) waiting for a store employee to get down a very large pallet of 12pk soda out of the steel. This pallet was a display meaning all the product was stacked straight up and down and very very unstable. The employee was bringing this pallet down and was driving it in my direction about 10 feet off the ground, I noticed how jerky he was with the controls and moved further back and no sooner than I stepped away the guy totally rocked the pallet sending every single 12 pk all over where I'd just been. You might think that's not enough to kill someone however there have been multiple people that died in warehouses from similar incidents.

Well, I’m very clumsy so if something can go wrong while I’m doing something, chances are it will. I can’t even walk from one room the other without tripping. I’ve fallen down the stairs only once this winter though, so I’ve got that going for me. (Knocks on wood)

i cant think of anything too serious that stands out though.

Somehow got a flesh eating bacteria... Started as a odd bump on my leg 2 days later had gone up 4x in size and had a 104 temp... Went to the ER was up to 105 then. Emergency surgery. Had I waited any longer... Would not be here.

So this is my don't EVER drink and drive story.

Was having a bad day. So decided to drink. Drank enough, to more or less pass out.

Then got a call, that made matters worse. Something now required my attention, immediately.

The better call would have been to pass out, and address it the next morning.

Instead, I drove. Crashed my car into the median, because didn't want to hit the car that had cut me off.

Totaled it. And dislocated my elbow...which is rare w/o fracturing the forearm.

Regardless, I remember opening the car door with the other hand. Cause the dislocated one, was non functional.

Walked to the front of the car, saw the damage and passed out infront of the car.

Next thing I remember, is someone asking me if I was ok. Just mentioned which hospital I wanted to go to.

And woke up in the ER a few hours later, screaming. Till they gave me morphine. And a bit of it.

Bottom line. I should have died. If not in the crash, from collapsing in front my car.

A lot could have gone wrong. Thank God it didn't.

Never, touched a key after alcohol again.

One time in airborne school right after I enlisted, on my 2nd jump my parachute got tangled and didn't open. So I had to pull my reserve, this may sound simple but when there is about a 7 second buffer from jumping and not giving a parachute adequate time to open it's one scary situation!

TL;DR AT BOTTOM

As with many, mine was a car wreck. I'd fallen asleep at the wheel with my future wife, and my boss's son both in the vehicle (also asleep) with me. We were on our way back from a 9 hour, round trip road trip. I took my cousin home and picked up my boss's kid on the way home. We were maybe ten minutes from my boss's house, and I finally succumbed to my sleep apnea and dozed off...

When I felt the truck drop off the road, I opened my eyes. About 5 feet in front of the truck I saw the guard rail. I had two options. Either try and swerve, probably overcorrect, probably hurt us more, probably send us hurtling down into the river bed below, and who knows what else...

Or, let go, relax, and let the truck do what it was going to do.

I chose the latter, in a split second, and all I said was, "Fuck..."

Let go of the wheel, applied the brake for just a moment, then let off right before we hit so the truck shifted its weight.

Luckily, when I fell asleep, my foot had fallen off the gas so the truck had already slowed itself from a barreling 85 down to around 40.

The truck flipped, everyone ended up okay. Just sore and my gf-at-the-time-now-wife had a small bruise from her seat belt across her abdomen. Had it checked, no damage.

We ended up lucky, but I realized how easy it was for me to hurt myself and others without proper sleep and getting behind the wheel. Another time before that wreck, I almost slammed into the back of an 18-wheeler for the same reason. I was by myself. That one I did swerve out of the way and slid side-ways in the ditch for about 4 semi-truck lengths.

Needless to say, my mother finally stopped arguing with me about needing a sleep-test which my boss had done (he suggested it). She finally realized the severity of my condition. Yes, I'm overweight, but the doc said I'd have trouble anyway because the flap in the back of my throat is larger than it should be. So even if I were skinny, it would cause issue.

After my sleep apnea machine, I have not come close to wrecking my vehicle again (at least not for falling asleep... lol). I have NOT wrecked again, though, minus hitting a deer that I couldn't miss. Barely did anything though, I don't count it as life-threatening. At least not for ME. :P

Anyway, TL;DR

Almost wrecked once, did wreck once. Got help. No longer fall asleep at wheel, for 10 years now... Hit a deer also, but don't count that. Wasn't life-threatening for me. Just the deer... :P

Hmm...I've had more of these than I'd like to count.  Bad car wreck, been shot at, been stabbed, getting hit by a LeBaron when I was younger was fun.  But of all these, I think the worst was probably the IED that decided not to detonate on me, far as butthole puckering moments go, that one's up there.  I can't count the times I should have died and somehow haven't yet.

We used to do a lot of stupid shit as kids, its a miracle we all made it this long.  When I was 17 I "borrowed" my parents car.  Picked up a bunch of friends, went on some gravel road I shouldn't have been on.  Went a little too fast and rolled the car multiple times, landed upside down.  We were lucky, just minor injuries.  Later found out the car was just a few inches away from going off a cliff.

Report Post Tip

I got stabbed by a beer bottle in my face. Wasn't that near-death since there was no way that the bottle could shatter my bones and end up in my brain, but it was still fun. It was broken, like in the movies when you break the lower half and stab someone, that is what happened to me. Luckily it hit my jaw, somewhere below the nose, so the bones stopped the bottle going deeper in.

I've never had one but omg I just watched this Netflix doc...well its a series. Its called surviving death. Watch episode 1. Its all about people dying, coming back, leaving their body. Its crazy. It makes me rethink everything I believe

Was out drinking with some buddies and we were on a nature hike.  We came across a rock area that had about a 25 ft high cliff off of it.  We were hanging out there and drinking more.  To make a long story short,  i ended up falling head first off the cliff into boulders bigger than all of us.  I was lucky that i didnt break my neck.  Ended up getting knocked out cold,  we were about a mile away from the closest road, and somehow I walked to where a car was able to pick me up and get me to a hospital.
