I think your idea of member whoring is way off compared to what whoring actually is.

A well written message and an offer of help... that is recruiting, or simply someone nice enough to help the new mafioso. Straight up asking someone to join you, that is whoring.

And Ashes, I would be glad to punish you.

Is this REALLY what things are coming to these days? People are typing the most half assed thing and passing it off as a recruitment message. Member whoring is rampant. I've been alive for about a half hour and two, yes, TWO people messaged me. (Three including that kind 'Anonymous fellow). And this is the stuff I get. He sent me two messengers to pick me up, this is the second one. The first one was much better. Too bad he didn't use the same messenger.



All of this member whoring these days it pitiful, when I started this game, I was messaged and recruited by a stranger because this game was unknown to me. So I thank them. Now, I'd like to publicly bash member whoring which is presumably for the good of this site. So I must say to you all, never message -48s, even if they are random people who had just set their first toe onto our shores. Don't member whore, it is pure evil and whoever does it is clearly a heathen. REPENT!!!

Hmmm, i am still trying to figure out where this whoring occured. Member whoring... usualy is trying to convince someone to join your family even after he/she made it clear that they would join. Or even worse, offering money as a deal. Now that is low... but... contacting a newly fresh off the boater for a little talk and maybe a warning for the early stages of his/her life is NOT member whoring. Even offering shelter is not, as long as you dont push it. If he/she declines, respect it... they wont make good members anyhow!

First off, I can't find where Ashes attempted to member-whore anyone in that message. It seems as though he offered a bit of advice: join someone lest you end up in the cemetery and then offered to help you out if you wanted it from him. There were no demands, bribes, etc. in getting you to join his family. In fact, it looks as though Ashes put a lot of time and thoughtfulness into that piece of mail...far from a casual: "Hey wanna join my cru?" message.

Another thing...who says it is it wrong for leaders to try to recruit people anyway? Shouldn't they be doing everything they can to strengthen their families by adding new, hard working members? I think it's a good thing for leaders to be stepping up, communicating with new civilians and trying to help them get started off on the right foot around here. If you disagree, don't respond to the mail and join who you want to. It's that simple.

I agree with Rathbone . It looks like a proper offer letter .Micheal could have just said no i need time to think instead of bringing it here and making a fool of himself.

My bloodline has spent about six generations here, and because all of them have left extensive journals on the happenings of their own time, I believe that my opinion on this issue is worth hearing out, at the very least. While this debates has consumed our for for a long time, there have been general agreements on the issue. It is not explicitly wrong for crew leaders or the ones in their family to scout out new members to this thing of ours and offer them work. Considering that many people who choose this life are not aware of how to begin in the right way, it is only right that seniors offer them a helping hand. Whether that person chooses to accept the help or not is his/her choice entirely. This is where the term 'recruiting' ends. Repeatedly persisting with offers of help even after being refused, or trying to use money as an enticement is what 'member whoring' commonly comes under. Offering money after the extending hand has been grasped is not whoring, it is merely an investment of faith.

From what I see of Ashes' mail, he is merely extending the hand, which you could have refused very politely Michael. That would have ended the whole thing. Provided Ashes never sent you a follow up mail, trying to change your mind with money, or threatening you to join him, I see this as quite a waste of time.

Ashes, you made a critical error in your recreuitment process. You offered him advice and a helping hand. What you should of done is not spoken to him and jsut sent him an invite. I am thinking of running a class

I'd really like to know the difference between "making you an offer to join me" and sending an invite. They can both be declined, accepted, and ignored. Yet somehow if it's only in message form, we let it slide? And have we gotten to a point where pressuring new individuals into joining families is "okay"? Read that message. "Dangerous neighborhood", "find a boss or you'll get killed", "I'll get you some coffee if you join me". If I were a half-wit petty thief, this would scare me into joining any fucking family. They just got off the boat and the first thing you want to tell them is what they need to do before they die? Even if that isn't member whoring, that's ridiculous.

The message Ashes sent asks tons of questions. Sure, he offers some guidance; but what mafioso is going to ask for "guidance" when a CL is telling him his life is in danger? If you really want to use that to pressure them into your family, at least tell them how much time they have. In my opinion, this is a blatant showing of member whoring. But; lucky for me, I don't care. Ashes can fill up his HQ however he wants, and it doesn't affect me. I'm not going to tell him to stop; that's not my place. However, every time these instances gets dragged into the Streets, you can be sure I'll show up to provide my two cents.

I'm going to have to agree with the majority of Mafiaso here and say this is a well written message. You are obviously out of touch with reality and the way things work around here. You're telling me that whether I send you a well written message such as what Ashes sent, or I simply send an invite, you consider it them the same? That's the message you convey in your reply.

I implore you to use whatever common sense you would expect one of your members to use when addressing another individual in power.

I don't recruit. My objective when approaching a newbie isn't recruiting; it's retention. Get them to understand and enjoy our world before you try herd them into your HQ. If someone doesn't want my help, I don't pursue it any further. Anytime I've approached a new member of Our Thing; I have at least carried on a conversation with them before I even bring up the idea of joining a family. And even when I do; I leave it to them to ask me about my family. If they like what they hear, they can join up.

Is it alright if I just send out mass messages to all the new people on our shores that just say "Join my family"? No. That wouldn't be okay. I have to say, i am shocked of what your thoughts are about this Pharol. You suggest Ashes is forcing a member to join his crew using fear as a tool. Warning the newlies about the dangers in our streets is not member whoring. He did'nt say join my crew now or you'll die, surely you can see the difference here. I am not here to talk in the name of Ashes, but just to show the difference between member whoring and talking with a newly and showing some descency while doing it. Member whoring is... sending out invites without first talking with him... constantly asking him to join your crew after he repeatively turns down the offers. Informing someone of the immediate danger in beeing unemployed is NOT member whoring. You dont have to like his ways of recruiting or agree with them... but i would'nt call this member whoring not in a million years.

If you are going to accuse someone of member whoring, come out here with blatant proof! To me, member whoring is serious business. It is a pitty so few people can tell the difference between a descent approach and whoring someone. A descent approach does'nt have to consist of italics as you put it, but Ashes has took it upon himself to use all the tools in hand. Does he really have to do this? I dont think so. I have great respect for a Crew Leader to introduce himself to newlies this way. I also encourage all of my own members to take this as a good example on how recruiting should be done.
