Random threats, what would you do? Started by: Althalus on Feb 13, '12 14:04

As we saw yesterday some stirrings in the streets caused the demise of Batman and many from his family, now i don't want to drag that out anymore there are other avenues to discuss that specific incident.

However the whole situation has got me thinking, at various times young voices come to the street declaring the death of [insert random CL/City here]. Usually this happens after a war or take down. The kids or friends of those who have died come to the streets to berate the killers and predict their doom, however it's rare that the predictions actually come true.

What has got me thinking though is how much attention actually gets paid to these open threats? Would most just shrug it off or does even the hint of a threat cause your gut to stir enough that it warrants you taking action.

For me it's simple, any threat no matter how insignificant at the time has the potential to grow into something more if left unchecked. So therefore deal with it early to save later hassle for at the end of the day a family heads responsibility is to their families safety and as the old saying the best defense is a good offence.

Report Post Tip

Anyone that gets wind of any threats of that nature will seek to pour water on the flames early. Even if its just a quick chat with the people involved to clarify there is no issue.

Report Post Tip

Well that's one thing, but really how much can you find out in a quick chat? For surely the people involved are hardly going to own up to it, they are going to misdirect until they are ready to strike.

Report Post Tip

Of course will the people who are involved in such threats give you missinformations regarding their plans. But that's what a Don has to learn to deal with. A Don needs to know what to do with certain informations, where to find out what's true and what's false. That's a job for a family head.

Sure you shouldn't freak out and take every open threat too serious. In my opinion 99% of those threats are bullshit and that's why most of these happenings can be dealt with a quick chat. Anyways, as a head of the family you need to know what's real and what's just a joke. If you're not capable in doing so you'll face the consequences no matter what.

Report Post Tip

Okay well lets flip this around a little.

Say your the one who is being accused of being the threat, if there is no truth to it then you should have nothing to worry about. But say there is truth to it?

Do you deny any knowledge and forget your plans, do you play dumb in the hope that you'll be believed to later carry out said plans, or do you decide that since the rumors are flying it is time to move forward your plan and attack right away?

Report Post Tip

if there is no truth to it then you should have nothing to worry about

Wrong. If there IS truth, you have nothing to worry about. If the person is approaching you about your own plans, then clearly there has been someone shouting their mouth and you either abort said plans, or speed them up if possible.

The worst case scenario is there were no plans to begin with, even though you had no plans you now find yourself in a situation where someone, possibly much stronger than you, believes you have an intention to cause them hard. Right away you are on the back foot struggling to comprehend whats happening, you will be completely taken aback and as such will find yourself clutching at straws to prove your innocence, normally such actions will only give the offended party further reason to suspect you and mistake your nervousness for proof that the plans were true.

Take Batman for example. I have no idea if he had plans, I highly doubt that he did though, in fact if he did have any crazy plan to strike Chicago then the man had lost his mind. Look at this situation closely; new family, new city. Hardly the corner stone to build an attack, is it? Looking even further you'd find the man has been asleep for a long time and only recently decided to start working more in this Thing Of Ours and so compared to others of his age and rank, he was a fairly weak individual.

Now obviously Chicago are unlikely to know the in's and outs of Batman's capabilities, they would be unaware of the fact he could barely cause a wound on their members, nevermind their leaders, so clearly he wouldn't have any realistic plans to attack in those circumstances.

This didn't stop him from being killed though, did it? No. The reason for that is that the talks he obviously held with his counterparts in the Windy City weren't good enough to prove his innocence, coupled with the apparent inside information that the idiot running his mouth on the street displayed this only added further weight to the allegations made against Batman and Chicago did what anyone would do, attack first.

Anyone that has doubts whether or not their family is about to be attacked will always do what they feel is best for their family, and in most cases that will be to remove the threat and thus remove any doubt. Sure, if the person they killed was innocent then they might feel bad, but their family are now feeling much safter and that will always be the primary concern of any leader.

Report Post Tip

If one were to believe that redruM and his threats were the sole reason for the takedown than that person is very misinformed. War is always a tough decision but when the reasons begin piling up within hours of the auth - you begin to realize that the problem is with said crew. My city head acted on the threat of leaked information and posing threats against our lesser protected members being presented from a crew that also had been slandering and actively recruiting established made members of our city. Action was taken. Ill feelings are had. Life goes on.

Fozzy allow me to clear up what I said, I wasn't implying that you were being told your plans, I was implying that you were being accused in public for all to see.

Report Post Tip

This thing of ours is dangerous business, leaders come and go but this thing of ours keeps on going.

What I mean is, what's done is done. I must agree with Fozzy, I don't believe Batman had anywhere near the required firepower to take arms against Chicago. If he did believe he could take out Chicago, he was out of his mind.

Report Post Tip

While that may be the case, it wouldn't be the first time someone who didn't have the capabilities have a go. Not everyone is cut out for the waiting and building game. Besides the threat that was spoke of did not have a time scale, so for all anyone knows it could have been long and distant plans.

this thread should be moved to OOC as well.

Report Post Tip

Why should this be moved? What warrants it belonging in OOC?

Report Post Tip

because is is Out of character. (OOC) This is a discussion on an event, not a RP in any way.

Report Post Tip

OKay I'll admit it's been a long time since I came out here and started a discussion, however I fail to see how this belongs in OOC apart from now it has been in character and started off about a situation that others may be faced with and how they would react.

It has since changed into a discussion about an event yes, however we could be a group of men standing on a corner having this discussion which allowed it to evolve into what it has become.

This is no way out of character as you suggest.

Report Post Tip

This was not started as a streetcorner discusion or speak. It could have been but it wasn't. Because of the way it is projected, it is OOC. Your character did not RP the debate/discussion.

Report Post Tip

Althalus. _Sneaker is right.

You neither stood on a soapbox, exited a limo surrounded by bodyguards nor leant on a street corner with a smoke.

At the end of your speech you didn't even have the temerity to not put your smoke out.

These are the key facets to a street speech.

Never, ever let the discussions get in the way of a soapbox standing moment.

Report Post Tip

Ah damn it I knew I forgot something, I was wondering why my nerves were the way they were.

checks his pockets for a packet of smokes

Oh wait, I quit. Ah well.

Report Post Tip

Sneaker - if this discussion is meant to be elsewhere that is for the gods to decide, not you. This discussion was flowing nicely before you waded in with your bout of OOC'itis and started infecting those around you with the same affliction.

Deadly turns to Althalus..

I think that empty threats are made quite regularly by those sons of the dead. I also think that most of the time the threats which are made are often soon forgotten, once the anger at losing their father or mother dissipates.

I think the best way to deal with threats like that is to shrug them off, by the time that the angry person has enough clout to actually do anything about it they usually realise that they don't want to throw their life away over an issue that was over a long time ago.

I've always seen revenge as pretty pointless myself. I find it helpful to remember simply this; The man who seeks revenge digs two graves.

Deadly puts out his soapbox, steps off his cigarette and climbs back into his street corner surrounded by limos... or something.

Report Post Tip

turns to Deadly and smiles

Ah yes, your very right there as they say time heals all wounds and the grievances we have as children usually disappear as we get older and yes those committed to vengeance have been known to pay for it with their lives.

goes back to leaning on the lamp post

Report Post Tip

Deadly, this is the streets. I shall comment where I feel like it.
