She trembled, partly because of the adrenaline, but mostly out of fear. Her eyes glanced at her husband, tied down, unable to do anything meaningful. She felt she was pushed ever more into a corner. Many eyes stared at her, expecting one last break out attempt. With hesitation, she side-stepped, but she forgot about the horse, who fully blocked her escape.
 

Moments later the queen fell at the hand of the rook. The bystanders applauded as both players rose from their seats and shook hands. Both smiled, albeit a forceful one from the loser. Syd turned around and made his way to one of the speakeasies nearby the park, where he met with some of the regulars working the West coast.

“We're all here for the money, correct?” Syd started, while ordering a drink with a gesture of his hand. His question was met with some nodding, perhaps even a small sigh from someone further at the back.

"What happened in the week of July 4th cost us all dearly, money wise and much more. Based on what I learned since then, many who died were bystanders, during and before the rogue events. It's not uncommon that an issue that exists between a few leads to the devastation of many - the crumbling of our collective fortune. We're idling for something like that to happen. We work, sleep, work, sleep. Just for some night to fall asleep and never wake up again. Our house destroyed by bullets and fire.”

Syd was met with more nodding in recognition. Many of who were there carried the scars that remembered them of the ruthless events that had transpired on these shores.

"Conflict and violence are a part of the world, but if we control it, it doesn't have to be the end of our world. In fact, if we regulate it and make it part of the grind, it may create more participation and even generate money for us. However, are we willing to fight for our family's existence or do we rather wait for the end?” ​​​​​​
