Remove MIA/RIA obit notifications from #dl Started by: Squishy on Aug 15, '12 22:27

Most of the notifications from the bot in #dl are important, or at least helps trigger an event. See tylers dying? oh shit gotta go shoot. Mademan in bobs crew died, oh shit, lets get on it...

But... MIAs and RIAs are sort of "ehhh who cares".

I suggest removing them from #dl (and possibly if people want, we could put it in an alternate channel for those who want to retain it)

Report Post Tip

YES!

Report Post Tip

What a great suggestion.

Report Post Tip

Yeah sounds good to me

Report Post Tip

No!

My reasons? Here they are:

1. I've been on MR since they were implemented and I've kind of gotten used to seeing their names so it would be weird.

2. Their names can be funny and sometimes spur on conversations between the users in #divinelunacy. Why would you kill what can be a conversation maker?

3. When MIA's die it CAN help the users. For instance, if I popped an MIA and forgot about it. And then saw it's name.. I could check to see if it was killed within it's 10minute of protection window. This aids the users.

4. There's no reason to mess with it to begin with. No one else brought up this idea and it only seems that because it bugs one person it's been suggested.

I think they're justifiable reasons. Many people in #divinelunacy yesterday were against it.. I'd at least thought that those on there get the majority vote, after all we use the channel. Most people on here will just post whichever others post merely to make it look like they took part in helping.

Would love to see this extended to all notifications to #dl being removed.

If you want to know what's going on in the game? Login.

Report Post Tip

I like this suggestion as most of the OBIT: messages are just rubbish that fills up log files.

I wouldn't go as far as Grin suggests though.

Report Post Tip

I dont like this suggestion.. I understand the premise but how far do you go? Do you then get rid of durdens as well? The OBIT: messages provide tactical as well as time saving advantages (which i'm sure someone will use as a reason to want to get rid of them)

Report Post Tip

Whitey this is just for the MIA's & RIA's what possible advantage is being removed?

Report Post Tip

For MIA'S and RIA'S...

FUCK. YES.

Report Post Tip

Whitey this is just for the MIA's & RIA's what possible advantage is being removed?

WS's provide knowledge on who is actively shooting.

Report Post Tip

EricLassard, 1) Don't be metathesiophobic. 2) I'll explain why the spam is a conversation killer across the board. 3) We can easily put all the messages in a second channel so those who care can watch there. 4) So far I see 6 rather enthusastic responses and two nay sayers. Also, this was my idea and Izzy liked it and posted it. So theres plenty of support.

Grin, its possible, but I think that's going a bit far. People do use it for notifications and such, and contrary to popular belief, not everyone wants to be logged in 24/7, nor will we force them to be.

Caruzzo, I may have misunderstood what you are saying, but OBITs for MIAs in MR cannot possibly tell you who is active.

Here is my reasoning for the removal of MIA's: Most experienced IRC users hang out in many channels and rely on their client notifying them of activity in their channels. When it comes to #dl people have been trained to ignore those notifications because its constantly MIA obits, not conversation. This destruction of the habit of watching for activity ruins many opportunities for real conversation.

As for leaving the deaths of players and Durdens in the channel, they are much less common and are normally good to know. Players because, well, who does'nt want to know whos dying? And durdens so you can spot the start of a wave.

If there are enough people attached to the idea of seeing ALL the MIAs\RIAs die, we can make a second channel with those messages.

Report Post Tip

Well, if you get a WS that Bob shot some MIA, then you know that Bob is training his gun, because if he were a prowacker then he wouldn't shoot a MIA in the first place.

Report Post Tip

Caruzzo, I think we are on two different wavelengths? This pertains to just the following:

[14:56] <~MafiaReturns> OBIT: Snyderphillip (Gangster) - None

Witness statements still go out, the obits page still shows him, we would just not show it on IRC in the main channel because its an MIA.

Report Post Tip

Oh yeah we're on different wavelengths.

The reason for my suggested extension is not to make people be forced to be logged in 24/7 but to make them actually play the game to be able to see what is going on in it. Whilst IRC is there and conversation is nice, it isn't the game and to be honest I'd greatly emphasise the importance of interaction in the game over that in IRC. The easiest way to get interaction in the game is to have people present in it.

With IRC notifications, people can just login when something happens. If you needed to login to know if something happens, you're already present and more likely to be playing/interacting within the game.

IRC notifications make people lazy and facilitate not playing. Many of us have been against this IRC/MR integration for years and I still don't see the benefit of having this information broadcast into IRC, although I'm sure there is a reason.

To the suggestion itself, I would be against it. Just because the more information that is flooded, the more you actually have to pay attention to see one that is worth noticing. Otherwise, we may as well just send out a global every time something happens just to make sure it can't go undetected.

So, I'll be voting against this should it get enough sponsorship to make it to the PC.

I see exactly where Grin is coming from with his comments, I am one of those people that has booed and hissed at the addition of things IRC related. Like he says.. it stops people logging in.

We're at a point at the moment where new players are a welcome sight to most of us and i feel that if IRC related notifcations it would benefit us in many ways.

I feel it would create more general interaction in game as Grin said... people would need to login to see if they've been shot at, etc. This could quite easily turn into logging in and sending a few mails (more interaction), it also adds the the amount of users we have logged in at any 1 time (a lfew of the new people will log out/close the window just by looking at the relatively small online list... especially in the early morning as there can be as little as 30 players online) so if we have 10 players logging in before they go to work, thats 10 more players that show up on the online list. The difference between keeping one or 2 newbies extra could be THAT.

I've campaigned before for everyone to exit IRC for just a week but to no avail.

I'm not quite sure why you'd vote against it though Grin considering it is a step in the right direct. Granted, it's a TINY one compared to what people like you and I want but at least there's been movement on the issue. I think you voting no on this is a case of cutting your nose off to spite your face.

if IRC notifications were done away with, then it would benefit us in many ways*

MY KINGDOM FOR AN EDIT BUTTON!

Report Post Tip

Oh also.. can we get rid of notifications for Outside forum posts? They're technically nothing to do with the game so not sure why they're on there anyway :)
