Original Suggestion Thread: Business District Perks by LilacDelaney
Suggestion Sponsors: PC-Asylum, PC-ralph, PC-SpikeSpiegel, PC-Warrior and PC-Whitey
Report Post Tip

The original suggestion is:

It goes a little like this..

I just want to base it in the business district forum, taking into consideration that the legitimate businesses there are not in fact legitimate because they are run by the Mafia. So I got to thinking that if you were to post a couple of times in any of the threads in the business district, you could receive a "Business District Perk". This perk would entitle you to receive an couple of extra units of drugs at a discounted price to their current City rate and the owner of the thread you posted in would receive a percentage of your profits in addition to your crew and yourself.

To simplify, here it is in point form:

You post in a thread in the district forum.
You randomly receive a Perk for posting.
You have an option to buy a drug at discounted price from the current City rate.
The range of units you can buy could be anything between 1-5 units of drugs (could be rank-dependent?)
The units you got from this perk would stack on top of the units that you are already allowed to hold.
The money that you make from selling the discounted drugs would be split between you, the business owner and your crew tax whereas the remaining profit is treated normally.

Rewards given to business district owners and business district posters, in a nutshell. Some have expressed concern that this may inject unnecessary cash in the game, but I honestly don't see how this can't be tempered to allay those concerns if the rewards were small enough. Personally, I'd like to see the return of the MRSE as a complement to this suggestion, as I think it'd be a fantastic jolt to encourage more people to start placing decent businesses (and posts) back in the district.

{For those who weren't around or have forgotten the MRSE, it was basically an incentive that allowed the business owner and possibly a few shrewd users to make some cash; each player was allowed to have 5 various stocks in business that rose or fell according to activity and quality content - spam and nonsense replies didn't factor into the stock price. The business owner would have a share as well, obviously.}

I really don't think we have found the proper solution to how bd perks should work yet. Maybe through discussing this we can find it. I would prefer to see the MRSE be put back into place as a form of promoting more activity, than just giving them money for posting something just to get money. While yes, it's incentive and may spark more activity, we shouldn't NEED that incentive to do it.

Report Post Tip

I honestly don't believe perks should be given out to try to improve posting activity. If all the people who have been talking about business district perks and coming up with suggestions for it where role playing in business district instead it would be more lively. Instead of trying to get game incentives why not getting together with others who want role play & do it.

I personally believe that enkindle's suggestion (http://mafiareturns.com/comm/thread/310809#2929134) is a much better way of rewarding people that do post. I stick by what I originally said in that I don't think this is the right way forward.

Report Post Tip

I agree completely with what Flash-Fire has said. I will look at enkindle's idea again and see if maybe we can't incorporate it into this one in some fashion? Or look at it if this one doesn't gain the support.

Report Post Tip

I have read all the responses and I do have to agree that I don't believe this is a better way forward, IT IS however a solution to progression. However, I believe there are better ways to improve in this field, we just need to brainstorm a little more :)

As DS stated, I went through and read Enkindles thread, and I agree that his is a much better rewarding system that I believe the user base will be more willing to accept and adhere to right from the get go.

Report Post Tip

I think this could be implemented cleanly if it was something that was a random occurrence from posting rather than something you'd automatically get for simply posting. It'd be an incentive, but not a guaranteed one. The option for users to reward other players for their posts monetarily has existed ever since the banking system was introduced, so I'm not really sure how much of an effect adding a button would do, in that case.

{Semi-related for the coders, but is the MRSE code still around, or would it have to be built from scratch if it was revived?}

Report Post Tip

Do we have any more thoughts on this? Are we going to try to incorporate enkindle's idea with this one? Is there any thing else to add to this? Can we get a coders input about the MRSE?

Report Post Tip

I think we should vote on this idea as it is and then see if Enkindle's idea gains the sponsorship to bring it to the PC forum.

Report Post Tip

I guess I'll go ahead and set this to vote in a few days, although there hasn't been much discussion on it, it needs to move forward in some fashion.

Report Post Tip

Personally I don't see this as a needed function, there are already things put in place for the players to achieve what is needed from the BD, not a lot of users put a lot of effort into the BD.

To support what DS has already stated, I don't think this is the right step forward as far as the BD goes.

Perhaps a suggestion to allow more interaction with the BD? Such as the ability to actually purchase goods from these businesses?.. I can imagine that would be hell to code, but I feel if there was more ability to interact with the actual businesses other than role playing, that the BD would thrive a bit more.

Report Post Tip

Firstly, I'm going to state that I prefer Enkindle's idea to this original suggestion and would prefer to see it brought to the forum. Having read through things a little more and had a look at a few BDs, I actually agree with Sticks in that the BDs need something other than the RP aspect to encourage people to interact more. I have noticed some really genuine attempts of late, but the fact is role play alone is not enough to lure people into the BDs.

This idea certainly isn't a necessary function; the fact is, it fell a bit flat at the discussion stage and I think that in itself demonstrates that as DS has said, it isn't the appropriate way forward at this time. However, I will wholeheartedly stress that we need something to revive the BDs. Right now, I see Enkindle's idea as the cleanest, most concise means of achieving this.

Report Post Tip

I'm totally confused as to how this got here when not a single PC member is voting for it. Anyway, I really am not sure what could be a good solution to bring back life to the BDs. I agree some sort of reward is needed because the vision stats apparently is not enough.

{Test to see if this is redacted and will continue on next post}

Report Post Tip

{With people on vision answers and giving local lists to the rest of the people in the crew, it is not really a must to be posting to have good vision yourself}

Some form of extra reward needs to be added. I don't like the idea of having to pay to like, but I will leave this to elaborate in enkindle's idea.

Actually, I do like the idea of giving an extra few perks for posting in the BDs and perhaps the same code that awards the vision stat could be used to give out these perks.

Report Post Tip

I honestly don't see why people NEED extra rewards to post. That really seems ridiculous to me. No one needed rewards before and business districts used to thrive. I still think this is a player issue and not a game/ admin issue that needs something hardcoded in.
