The Plan: Reconnaissance Started by: OdaEtsuya on Nov 19, '08 10:21
Suya finds himself staring off after Eva in a daze for what seems like the hundredth time, this time touching his fingertips to the flesh of his cheek where her lips just left. To anyone else it would appear that nothing was there, but to Suya's mind, the imprint of Eva's lips is as distinct as if she had sliced into him with a blade. Smiling, he shakes his head trying to bring himself back to the situation at hand. For the first time he really starts to examine his surroundings. This little "print shop" is peculiar to say the least, but in its own odd way it there is a very professional feel to it, despite the entirely unprofessional setting.

Moving to take a closer look at the contents of one of the tables his foot smacks into a box hidden underneath it. Normally he wouldn't have paid the box any mind, but something feel out of the box onto his foot. Glancing down there is no mistaking what that something was. Crouching down he picks up the bundle of money and examines it. It doesn't take him long to find the discreet tell-tale signs, he's been around enough exquisite forgeries in his life to know that this is counterfeit. He takes a look at the box and sees that it is filled to overflowing with the stuff.

He stays crouched with the bundle of counterfeit money in his hand as he tries to decide whether or not to bring it up to Eva. He's so focused on his thoughts that the sudden sound behind him causes Suya to jump slightly and he turns to see Eva, his cheeks coloring a touch in the shame of letting himself become so distracted that she was able to sneak up on him.
Report Post Tip
There is a blush on Eva's cheeks as well, as she crouches beside him. Reaching out, she runs her fingers over the money, sighs, and shrugs a little.

Ok, so I have a few "unsavory" friends. Tommy's a good guy- he just...he does it for the money, ironically. He's never printed it for himself. You'd be amazed if you could meet him.

Standing, she smooths out the navy blue skirt and and tugs on the sleeves of the matching blazer to give Suya the full idea of the outfit. The suit fits stunningly- hugging her soft curves beautifully, and hanging neatly in all the right places. Around her neck sits an absolutely exquisite strand of pearls, and against her light, olive skin tone, they seem to glow. Reaching up, Eva touches them gently with her fingertips and smiles

I was going to pay you back for the suit, you know- but this...this may be a little rich for my blood.

She knew it was a gift- and that fact floored her, but for some reason, she just wanted to hear him say it.
Report Post Tip
Straightening, Suya takes in the vision before him. He had thought that she looked beautiful as a geisha, but this, this was somehow so much more her. He could feel the world fading around them, leaving them in a nothingness with only each other. He is beginning to think that her beauty would shine through to his eyes no matter how she decorates it, or surrounds it. Slowly, as if moving through water, his hands drifts upwards towards her cheek.

He only feels her flesh beneath his fingertips for the briefest of moments before hundreds of years of tradition, of loyalty, of service, hauls him back to the reality of their world. The reality of the task that has been laid before them. His hand jerks backs as if burnt and he clears his throat.

There is no need, Eva. I can afford to throw a bit of money around in the name of our boss's protection. Well, I suppose we had best be on our way. You know, you never did explain what you had planned for me to be doing while you posed as an accountant.
Report Post Tip
Eva jumps a little when he so quickly pulls his hand away- as if she'd shocked him or something. Quickly recovering, she continues.

Oh- right, here- you'll need this.

Reaching into a small handbag, she pulls out a folded piece of paper with an address on it. She hands it to him and snaps the handbag shut.

That is the address of O'Reilly's ex-wife. No one hates him more than she does, and I have a feeling she'd be more than happy to give you whatever dirt she has. She lives in a penthouse about three blocks from the bank- so if you go there while I go to the bank, we can kill two birds with one stone. We'll meet at the Brass Eagle Tavern at 2 for a late lunch and compare notes.

She felt like the plan was perfect, but something made her double-back. She blushed a little- Suya was known for being an excellent strategist, so she didn't want to seem too sure of herself if the plan had kinks.

I mean- if you think that's a good idea...
Report Post Tip
Looking at the piece of paper in his hand, Suya can't help thinking that he isn't particularly fond of the idea of Eva going undercover without him there to back her up. He can't deny that, besides that one hiccup, her plan is solid. They are quickly running out of time to find out as much as they can, so killing two birds with one stone as she says is definitely their best course of action. He stuffs the paper in his pocket and returns his eyes to Eva.

I could not have come up with a better idea myself. Shall we be off then.

Suya pulls open the door and then turns back to Eva and offers her his arm to escort her down to the car, a gesture that he hopes takes her back to their first meeting as it has him.
Report Post Tip
*standing outside the building, smoking a joint, leaning against the building*

*pulls in deeply and exhales*

*over hears the couple talking about going to the bank and withdrawals*

*thinks to himself, "Well I'll be damn!"

*flags down the next cab and hopes in*

To the bank now mon!

*pulls 38 cal. out of his coat jacket*

Matter of fact! I'll take myself.

*hits driver in back of head with the pistol and jumps in the driver seat*
Report Post Tip
They rode mostly in silence to the bank. Eva noticed that, halfway through the trip, Suya started peering in the rear-view mirror every so often. She smiled a little- he was certainly just paranoid. Eva had run this deception a hundred times; though not always for the same noble intentions. That was something of Eva's past that she wished would stay there- lurking in shadowy places that Suya would never have to see.

Within a half hour, Suya pulled the car up to the curb at the bank. Clutching her hand bag, Eva smiled and pulled the door handle and popped the door open. Before stepping out, she gave him a confident smile and a wink.

Alright- here goes nothing. I'll see you at 2 at the Brass Eagle.

Chuckling, she hops out, then leans over to glance back at him

Tell me what you want to drink- I'm pretty sure I'll beat you there.
Report Post Tip
Suya takes a brief moment to think and then smiles.

Better make it vodka. I am yet to find a place in this city with decent sake.

As she makes her way to the door of the bank, Suya, with practiced ease, keeps her in his vision while scanning the street around her. He expects that she picked up on his paranoia on the way over here, but he has the worst feeling that things are going to go bad for her in there. Once she's inside he pulls away from the curb but he doesn't go far. He takes the car around the block and then brings the car to a stop, facing the street he started on, just around the corner from the bank. She'll be in there for a little while at least, he'll leave before she's finished, just not yet.
Report Post Tip
*pulls up to the and parks*

*lites his joint and then notices a cop standing down by the street corner*

*continues smoking*

Damn cops! What the hell!?!? Where is this guy? I know this was the spot. Maybe I missed the time.

*notices the driver awakening and hits him across the head again*

*thinks to himself, "this has got to be the break I need right now"*

*cranks car and throws in drive*

Damn pigs! I'll make a couple of blocks!

*thinks to self, "I know this guys has to come back"*

*after making 4 rights he's right back in front of the bank, only now there's two cops and a car*

*turns left and makes 3 more lefts, now as I pass the bank the cops are gone and the amour truck has just made a drop*

*parks on the side of the bank near the town hall*

*cuts off car and began rolling joint*

Now we play the waiting game!

Strolling confidently into the bank, Eva- or, Nancy Mahoney- made eye contact with the first customer service representative she spotted. He was a thin, wiry man with very little hair and a timid look on his face. Smiling, she approached his desk with briefcase in hand.

Good afternoon- I am Nancy Mahoney, business partner of Ethan McIntyre, CPA. Mr. McIntyre is out of town on foreign business, so I am conducting local business in his stead.

The little man nodded and smiled shyly.

"How may I help you, Ms. Mahoney?"

Easy as cake, Eva thought to herself. She pulled a slip of paper from the briefcase and held it toward him.

Well, Mr. McIntyre left town with a little more paper than he should have, and left me without one of our client's records. I need a copy of the last 3 months of transactions for this account.

Nodding, the little man took the paper and promised to be right back. Eva, satisfied that this deal was bagged, sat down in the nearest seat and crossed her legs in a most feminine fashion. Suya should be near the ex-wife's condo by now. Hopefully his job would be as easy as hers was proving to be.
Report Post Tip
From the slight concealment of his parking spot on the side street, Suya keeps a close watch on the bank's front doors for half an hour. Just long enough to ease his paranoia to a point where he could feel comfortable leaving Eva to her work. He would have seen or heard some sign, like the police showing up, if things inside had unraveled around her. Though he is still fairly reluctant to leave her, he pulls away from the curb and heads for O'Reilly's ex-wife's condo.

Twenty minutes later he arrives outside the condo and is happy to find no visible signs of security, though he's not certain if that should please him or not. He definitely didn't figure O'Reilly for the type to take care of his ex, except maybe with a few dollars here and there, but if she has as much information as he hopes she does, then he would expect at least one armed man protecting her. Despite the lack of visible security, Suya doesn't let his guard as he gets out of the car and makes his way to the door. In answer to his knock, he is met with a slightly classier and younger woman then he had expected. He can't imagine how she ever ended up married to the scum he'd met at the bar the night before, but his surprise was not enough of to distract his keen eye from the large shadow of a man falling on the floor from behind the door.

Mrs. Daniel O'Reilly?

"I'm sorry, you've got the wrong house."

Her voice is steady, but there is obvious distress on her face. She begins to shut the door in his face, but he easily catches it with his left hand and hold it open while behind his back, the hilt of one of his daggers slides with practiced precision into the palm of his right hand.

We both know that is not true Mrs. O'Reilly. Please. I need your help.
Report Post Tip
Eva spent as much time as she thought was safe pouring over the financial records in a private room in the bank. She did not want to take an official copy from the bank, as that might be suspicious. Instead, she scanned over the financials and wrote down the important things- such as where most of O'Reilly's money went, how much, and how often. By the time she stood up to leave, she had enough information to paper-chase O'Reilly to his grave. She could hardly wait to tell Suya what she learned. Thanking the gentleman that helped her and returning the records, Eva snapped her briefcase shut and said goodbye.

Within 15 minutes, she was seated at the Brass Eagle with a martini and her briefcase by her side. She scanned a newspaper while she waited for Suya to return from his side of the job. Her insides were jumping like Mexican beans, and she know no amount of alcohol would calm her until she saw Suya safe.
Report Post Tip
Mrs. O'Reilly looks at Suya with pleading in her eyes. She knows as well as he that he's not going to be able to talk to her privately, or even get inside for that matter, without a bit of a fight. Calmly, Suya motions for her to back away and before she can take her hand away from the door he pulls it almost closed to give something of the impression that she had closed it. He waits just a second for her to het clear then shoves the door back open hard. It catches her guard, who'd obviously been leaving his position, on the shoulder and sends him staggering deeper inside as Suya follows. The guard recovers quickly and turns to face his attacker. Suya catches the rifle swinging around to shoot him by the barrel and jabs the man in the throat with the hilt of the knife in his hand, barely retracting his hand from that strike before snapping a hard elbow across the guards jaw and following smoothly by bringing the knife hilt down into the man's wrist allowing Suya to wrench the rifle free. The guard crashing to ground and as he struggles back to his feet Suya smashes him with a straight blow to the back of the head with the butt of the rifle. Suya turns to face Mrs. O'Reilly as he expertly removes the firing pin from the rifle.

There. Now we can talk.

Nearly ninety minutes later Suya walks into the Brass Eagle, pauses to scan the room, and then drops into the seat across from Eva.

Konnichiwa.
Report Post Tip
Eva glances up over the top of her newspaper without moving her head.

I see your little excursion wasn't as smooth-going as mine. Your suit is wrinkled.

Putting down the paper, she suppresses a desire to bombard him with questions pertaining to his health and well-being. Her concern is immense, but he appears to be alright on the surface.

What happened?
Report Post Tip
Suya glances down and seems surprised, as if noticing the slight disarray of his suit for the first time. Very casually he straightens himself up and then turns his attention back to Eva.

Just a small scuffle. Nothing to worry about, it is all taken care of.

Glancing down at the table, Suya finds himself lacking a drink and frowns slightly at Eva as he raises a hand a motions for a waitress.

I thought you were going to have a drink waiting for me? I did not think I was that long on my little excursion.

When the waitress makes her appearance, Suya, very politely with a gracious smile and a slight bow of his head asks for a bottle of vodka and a shot glass.

So, how did you make out at the bank?
Report Post Tip
Eva rolls her eyes at the waitress, not at all trying to hide her disgust. She waits until the little hussy walks away and huffs.

That bimbo-brained waitress has been ignoring me since I've been here. Every time I tried to get her attention, she'd just hold up a finger and mouth "just a second, hon."

Eva props her elbows on the table and smiles at Suya.

Makes me wish I was a stunningly handsome Japanese mobster- I might get some decent service now and then.

After a lingering moment, she reaches down and grabs her briefcase. She pops it open on her lap and pulls out a legal pad.

I don't know how O'Reilly is staying out of trouble. The man is spending more than he brings in- and he's got a nasty habit of borrowing from Peter to pay off Paul, if you know what I mean. His financial records make it look like he is any other lower-middle-class business owner just barely squeaking by. However, there is one detail that makes me smile. Call it "leverage."

She points to a line on the legal pad that reads "Mortgage: Second Ireland National Bank- $150,000.00." The smile on her face grows quite a bit.

There is no Second Ireland National Bank, and he doesn't own a house that has a hundred and fifty thousand dollar mortgage. I don't know where, but he's laundering money and making a killing- and I'm willing to bet Donna Marietta isn't getting her "fair share."
Report Post Tip
Suya's eyebrows shoot up at this very interesting piece of information. He slides the pad across the table so it's laying in front of him, allowing him a better look at what she has written. He is so focused on the the line Eva indicated that when the waitress returns with his vodka he very nearly ignores her completely, absently pulling out his wallet and a few more bills then are necessary to cover the cost and tip and glancing in the waitresses direction just enough to make sure she gets them before returning his eyes to the page.

Well, well, well. I knew he was not smart enough to keep all the little nuggets like this hidden. Unfortunately, he was smart enough to keep this aspect of the business from his wife. I focused mostly on structure with her, but I have no doubt if she knew about this she would have told me. She was very willing to help once I got her alone.

He leaves unsaid his belief that as much of her willingness came from fear of him after seeing how easily he dispatched of the guard as from her hatred of her ex-husband.

Maybe one of his drunken flunkies let something slip to our eyes and ears back at the bar. It would be very nice if we could find out where all that money is really going.
Report Post Tip
Well, hopefully we can get some of that information from the girls. They are going to be a big help, as they are already on the inside with O'Reilly. It will be easy for them to get information. Speaking of the girls, we should probably get back to the house soon. I am starving, though.

She pulls the legal pad away from Suya and grins like a Cheshire cat. Reaching up, she pulls her hair down and lets it fall over her shoulders. The dark brown of her hair and olive complexion of her skin seem to make the luster of the pearls even more brilliant.

We can talk business on the way back- for now, let's just enjoy some lunch, huh?
Report Post Tip
Suya is very quick to agree to that idea, realizing from experience the chaos that is very likely coming in the very near future, he understands the need to take opportunities like this to relax when the opportunity presents itself. The two of them spend the better part of the next hour letting themselves be lost in food, drink and conversation.

The laughter is still ringing from their throats as they make their way out of the Brass Eagle, Suya guiding Eva towards the car with a gentle hand placed between her shoulders. The lingering joviality from lunch does not blind Suya's instincts though, his eyes quickly and thoroughly scan the street for threats. He does not betray his displeasure to Eva when his gaze falls upon a car pointed at them from across the street filled with four men dressed in their best fresh from the floor work clothes who are paying entirely too much attention to everything but him and Eva, instead he just opens her door for her and makes his way around to the driver's side.

A few blocks later, as Suya keeps one eye on the rear view mirror as he drives, the car load is still with them as he expected they would be, just far enough back to fool themselves into thinking their being inconspicuous. Abruptly Suya takes a left turn and steps on the gas to get them two streets down before taking a quick right, getting them off that street before their tail can make it around the first corner. Catching Eva's confused look out of the corner of his eye, Suya stays focused on what he's doing and addresses her simply.

We have company.
Report Post Tip
Her first instinct is to look back- but Suya has already gotten out of their line of sight...for now. She just looks a Suya, then back at the street in front of them.

O'Reilly's guys?

Scenarios start flashing through her mind. Did someone follow her into the bank? No- there was no reason. O'Reilly's guys had no idea what she looked like- the only time they'd seen her was all dressed up like a geisha. Maybe someone had followed them to Julie's house. That couldn't be right either- Suya would have noticed that by now. Not knowing made the whole thing more uncomfortable.

Maybe we should leave the car hidden and get on foot for a while. They're going to be looking for a car on the street, not two people hiding in plain sight.
