| Crewleaders - A discussion | Started by: nosenseofremorse on Oct 18, '07 11:04 |

Following on from the late Slogans musings over the leaders of our current cities. I thought I would ask my fellow mafiosa what they think is the sign of a good crew leader? What attributes do you think the best leaders have had when they graced our fair cities over the generations? |

| they must be fair as in not judge someone to death when another person got a demotion for the exact same crime | |

The ability to network, the ability to command the respect of those they've networked, to be trusted by those they've networked and to use there strengths and weaknesses for the betterment of the greater whole (family/community). A crewleader is a focal point and sometimes the epicenter. |

| I believe a strong quality for a leader is the ability to listen. It is the easiest way to get to know your family and an ear on the ground will help you anticipate any threats coming your way. | |

One word. Charisma. Even the biggest bastard of a leader can be forgiven if he's charismatic enough to pull it off. At the end of the day this is the mafia, so we shouldn't be expecting our leaders to be saints, but if they've got that natural charm that a leader should have, then they will normally be able to rally the support of their troops in times of need. It all boils down to whether or not you would want to die for your leader, and no matter how good their organisational skills, no matter how noble their actions, if they just haven't got the right personality to win over their followers, they're just not going to cut it in times of dire need. Personality goes a long way. |

| I have always thought that the ability to communicate was the most important quality a leader could have. I don't think they have to necessarily be 100% active in the streets, but they should make an appearance every once in a while. However, the biggest aspect of communication should come when there are issues that arise. War time is a perfect example of this. Of course you need good guns, but I think that is why a leader should have trustworthy people under him/her that can man a hitsquad. If the leader has a gun, that is great, but communication can change the direction of a conflict. Mediation and conflict-resolution are key traits a leader should possess. | |

Yeah, communication is a big factor too, but I'd like to think that comes hand in hand somewhat with my offering of personality. Also handy, especially in times of war, is the ability to spin-doctor with the best of them. A good propaganda machine can turn a war in your favour, even if it shouldn't be. I've seen many examples of this in the past, and many occassions of people rallying support that, if the truth were publically believed, they would not have had. |

Your title is a bit misleading. This isn't a "discussion", but rather a question. It could have been a discussion if you would have offered your own viewpoint along with posing a question to the masses. Anyhow, I think the answer is quite simple. Being a leader requires being a "leader". It's that ability that some people possess that makes others admire them and want to follow them. This can take many forms, depending on what qualities some find admirable. I could be charismatic, as Beelz mentioned, and attract a certain type of follower. Or, I could be an asshole, and attract another type of follower. Leaders lead by example, and those that follow them are those who wish to emulate the example that the leader sets. |

Beelz hit it right on the button: charisma lets you get away with a hell of a lot. Niccolo Machiavelli once wrote, "that it would be best to be both loved and feared. But ... the two rarely come together" However, I believe that in the rare instances the two are achieved charisma goes a long way in providing this delightful medium. Having a mind for politics is essential too I feel; those who display no shrewdness and lack the ability to grasp situations quickly are doomed to failure and obscurity, whilst only those who turn bad situations to their advantage through a combination of propaganda, and yes, bags of charisma will be remembered. As Lucy has said, one cannot truly be considered a leader unless one leads. After all, the above qualities can be displayed by other members of the family, the Sotto Capos, the Consiglieres, and whilst a leader can be advised on what path to take; it is only he, or her, that can take it. There are many ways to lead; by fear, by exmaple, by compassion to name but a few, yet I believe it is only the cream of the crop that can lead by a fusion of all three. There are other attributes and qualities which "make" a good Leader, but it is these I believe to be the top of the list, and the qualities I would strive for if ever in a position of leadership. |

I think a very good point to make is that you've just got to be the type of person that people want to follow. It seems so simple, but a lot of people overlook it. There are many good people out there, but some of them just aren't ever going to be natural leaders, and that is a very hard burden to live with if you find yourself thrust into a leadership position in those circumstances. Some people have just got what it takes, others haven't, and never will. Any leader worth remembering has had something, be it through fear, through loyalty, or through trust that they've built up their reputation, but they've always got something noteworthy to mention. "XXX was a complete prick, but at least he kept his word." "XXX was terrible with organisation, but at least she was always nice to speak to." "XXX just went around shooting people for fun, but at least he was loyal to his own." The rest? Well, they probably weren't the type of people who should be leading in the first place, hence why history forgot them. One point worth mentioning though, sometimes it's the combination of a leader and a RHM that works, and either would not be anywhere near as effective without the other. Occasionally you just get two people who click, and who bounce off each other naturally. That's when you get a truly great family in the makings. The old cliche is true, a leader is nothing without their members, but the members are nothing without a leader. |

What makes a good leader? Someone who can kill their friends if they fuck up. Charisma, speaking and whatever else you guys said do matter. But if they can't punish someone when they quite obviously fucked up, then they cannot lead, no? |

Next someone will be asking "What makes a good family?" And all the other posters and speeches we have seen/heard many a time. Originality, anyone? |

Here's a novel idea. Instead of whinging you could just, oh, I don't know, take part in the discussion? Or just walk on by? Anything is better than making a pointless comment. |

And Nothing is better than hearing another one of these for want of a better word...lame speeches (Sorry nosense). Oh I'm not whinging, you have it wrong my little flower. I'm all up for people getting involved in the streets, but it would be nice to see a little originality around the place, fair enough there's not a lot of room for new things to say as most things that could be said, have been, but come on..."what makes a good leader?" |

This community has been around for a very long time now. I severely doubt that there's a topic that hasn't been covered already. So maybe it's been discussed before, doesn't mean it can't be discussed again, does it? And it's far more productive to just join in, or just ignore it, than to moan about originality. Come on sweetie, just throw your two cents in, give us an opinion on the topic and hand, I'll even flutter my eyelashes for you. |

Fair enough Beelz, keep fighting that good fight for the original thinkers...keep us nasties at bay. What makes a good leader? Quite simply someone who's clever, cunning, manipulative... Is that worth a flutter? |
