Everyone seems to be wondering what exactly the crewleaders are going to do with the now-vacant city of Las Vegas. I know this because I'm approached several times daily and asked if I'll put in a good word with Mr McTavish (Oliver--not Ryan) for certain people, highlighting their qualifications for running a headquarters. The crewleaders and their right hands have met to discuss potential candidates multiple times recently. The one thing everyone has agreed upon is that the new crewleader must be Made. Seeing that there are none of this distinction available, this created a dilemma. Should the crewleaders really auth someone solely because they've achieved a certain rank? What determines if someone is qualified to run a headquarters? How should the crewleaders select the new auth? Well, the answer to all of those questions has become, "we don't know." Yes, we have ideas, and we've all been tossing them around, but the ideal one has not surfaced. For this reason, we're turning to you all. If you were in our shoes, what selection method you utilize in order to select the most qualified Mafioso to open a headquarters in Las Vegas? Please answer the above question in as much detail as possible. If your method is selected for use, you will receive compensation for your effort. Thank you. |

| It is not a case of that. Did you not read the thread? It is a case of HOW we auth people. | |

I think you should open it up for application. Let them come to you. Have them describe exactly what would make them worthy of being authed. As well as do a background check on the person in question (bloodline, the way they act, etc.) if it matches up with what they say, and what they say about themselves is desirable in a family head, then auth them. If you get a lot of applicants to pick from: just get back together with the other leaders, toss the ideas around for each candidate and come to a conclusion. Seems simple enough to me, but I guess it doesn't always work this way because the world is not perfect. Still, it may be worth a shot. |

Ryan makes a good point. I can't believe I just said that. Should I be in the position of the leaders, I would spring henceforth with an elaborate question and answer session taking the following course. Leader: Is your name Sprozza? Candidate: No Leader: Sorry man, you didn't make it. On a more serious note though, ridiculous ideas leading to me being selected put aside; I would ask for each leader to put forward who they believe is the most deserving candidate. I would then subject each candidate to a question and answer session from each of the other leaders, it does rather sound like a job interview I know, but I believe it's the best way to do things. I would ask the candidate what they planned to do with the city, what their personal goals where, and throw in a few hypothetical situations to gauge how they react...Ala FrankieFigs. I would then have each Leader choose who they believe to be the most deserving auth, without being able to vote for their own candidate...Ala Eurovision song contest. In the event of a tie, I would either sack it all off and go home, or perhaps auth tied candidates to work in tandem. |

| Honestly, I think that those who have earned the honor of going bold should get their shot. To wait for made ranks is fine when the world is filled with them, but we have current leader sitting at a lowe rank than made, so the philosophy does not work for now, at least not for another week or two when more active members can achieve that rank en masse. For now, whoever the leaders feel deserves their name to go up in lights should get the job, regardless of what rank they have earned. | |

I agree that when there aren't a lot of Made Men running around, that a lesser rank should be looked at. If you don't have a lot of choices there isn't a lot the leaders can do there. I do like the idea of the applications and the question and answer sessions. I think that if someone has put in the time and the effort to be a worthy candidate, than they likely desire to get the chance to run a family anyway, and would likely apply. If someone wants auth and aren't bold enough to approach the leaders with an application, than I don't really feel that person would be bold enough to join the world of politics and run their own family. I think this would show the leaders who is worthy of a family of their own (obviously doing background checks and activity, etc as has been said already), and also who is gutsy enough for the job. |

Seriously, please don't auth someone just because there's a vacant city. No, I'm really asking you. Call it a personal favor if you must. Please. Back to what you were saying -- I really don't see why there would have to be much of a process. If they're on top of things, you'll notice them. If they've got their shit together, you'll know it. At that point, it should be rather easy, no? Making them jump through hoops seems a bit demeaning for someone who is soon to become your peer. This is, after all, the Mafia and not just some low-end college fraternity, right? Or, you can go with the tried and...well, hit or miss, to be honest, method of just authing the last guy's kid and call it a day. |

Auth is something that should not be taken lightly in any case, if there is no one who stands out to the leaders then guess what I think... I would think its probably not the best idea to just throw someone up for the sake of it because people are wondering what is going to happen with the fine city of Las Vegas. Auth is something that people need to work towards through a family showing their loyalty, respect and most importantly what they have learned during the time you have been there and have proved that you deserve it. If they do not know why they want to be a leader or what to do to help out around here then I would say that they aren't ready yet, and letting someone set up to fall down is not going to benefit anyone or the community. I think you need to be a leader BEFORE you get auth, that's right you don't need to be bold to be a leader. Set examples have respect, help your fellow family members in anyway possible and keep to Omerta. There is lots of things you need to understand and do before someone should be authed, these are the heads of our cities, these are the people that any new comer or old timer will be looking up to protect them and keep a roof over there heads. I think it is important to let you family head know that someday you would want to run your own family, have respect and patience though because they aren't going to throw you into a world you aren't ready for, when you are ready I'm sure they will let you know what's going to happen I'm sure. So here is my proposal on what should happen, the leaders should pick someone who has been around this business for a while and knows all the ropes. Someone who feels it is important to give back to the community and has proven himself worthy within his or her family already someone who already acts and puts forward the effort to be a leader. Get a couple of these respectful Mafioso's and bring them to the streets, tell them that they will have to make a speech in the streets on why they think they should be a leader, how they would run things if they got this blessing. Who ever should present themselves the best should be given the chance to set up. You will be able to tell on who is fit for the position after people start replying to the speeches, you will see if they can defend their points if they need to, you will see either a bunch of Mafioso's that are happy with what they see or aren't happy with what they see. Like it not when it comes down to it the leaders have the final say but the people that make up our cities will let the leaders know through answers to these speeches what they are looking for in there leaders and which they think will be the best. Now everyone got his or her 2 cents in, and no one has a reason to bitch because that person was put into power by everyone... I dunno, just a little brain storming on something a little different. Thanks for your time, -Dakine |

Personally, I don't think if there is no one to meet your qualifications, then the city remains empty. Or, Allow Nova to step into Las Vegas as his own. If he's proven himself as a decent and respectful leader, perhaps it's time to severe the strings and allow him to fly on his own. Okay, bad analogy. That, however, is merely a suggestion, and doesn't quite answer the question, "What would I do?" What would I do if I were in your shoes? It is a very difficult question indeed. I think it would be best if the leader had experience. Old blood, as they call it. But, in all honesty, it appears that most people in our world are protected by a family. Meaning, there's not that many unsponsored people hanmging around. I ask you... do we actually NEED another leader? Maybe, as I said above, we allow Nova his own city, and instead of picking an auth, we pick a successor, to take the place of a leader if one should fall. That, in a nut shell, is what I would do. |

Wandering on the streets late at night, Gatsby hears the echoes of an interesting debate. Approaching the group of articulate and inquisitive men and women, he listens with a smile. Waiting until it is appropriate for him to speak, Gatsby raises his voice and addresses the crowd I apologize in advance, as I have a penchant for verbosity. I'll try to keep this brief and not waste anyone's valuable time, and try to contribute something to the questions that were originally proposed. Should the crewleaders really auth someone solely because they've achieved a certain rank? Solely? No. Just because someone is able to advance in this world doesn't mean they should automatically be considered to lead a family, as I believe everyone hear understands. Leadership is qualitative, not quantitative; but I digress, as you ask how, and not why. The only factor rank should play in the question is if a candidate for auth is of a high enough rank where they are able to protect their family. That being said, the question of rank is less important as we move towards a state of relative stability; once this is solidified, it becomes more important. What determines if someone is qualified to run a headquarters? To paraphrase a famous Supreme Court judge (who was speaking of pornography): I shall not attempt further to define it, but I know it when I see it. Each leader is different, and achieves their status through a unique blends of skills. Certainly intelligence, determination, perception, and communication all play a role, but there is no test to measure this; it is evident through the interactions the person has in the community and the manner in which they conduct themselves. That is why I think the interview process has merit; it gives the chance for current leaders to take the measure of a man (or woman, of course). How should the crewleaders select the new auth? As I said, the interview process is intriguing. Regardless of the particular method, and borrowing from those who have already spoken, I believe essential qualities of the process should ideally involve: 1) Multiple candidates who are able to volunteer ONLY if they receive the permission to do so from their crewleader. This is not to say CL's should give their blessing only to their friends, but I do think it important that the leader of the candidate's family supports the decision. Once a group of approved candidates his been selected, the narrowing down process should begin. 2) Depending on the number of finalists, I believe it makes sense for each candidate to make a speech in these fine streets, explaining in less than a determined number of words why they are worthy of consideration for auth. 3) There should be a form of question and answer, whether it be from the crewleaders, the public, or both. Presented with hypothetical situations, or being asked to articulate an argument or a strategy is an invaluable insight into a person. 4) Whether this occurs early or later in the process, and again depending on the number, I think each CL should be able to veto one or two candidates and articulate a reasonable justification for doing so. This should NOT be an election; the CL's will need to work with this man or woman, and anyone they have honest reservations about should not even be considered. 5) Once the cuts have been made, a discussion between the crewleaders is the only way that this can be resolved, for the aforementioned reason that they alone are appointing a peer. If you were in our shoes, what selection method you utilize in order to select the most qualified Mafioso to open a headquarters in Las Vegas? I believe that answering this question would only be repetitive as to what I just said, and I have no desire to waste any more of people's time. In closing, I would like to thank the powers that be for opening this up to the streets. Though you have certainly earned your positions of power, your willingness to seek out new ideas is greatly admirable, and I, for one, wish you the best of luck in your efforts. Gatsby retreats from the crowd and slows down to wake up an old man who has falling asleep and apologizes for his longwinded tendencies. He swiftly crosses the road to lean on a lamppost, with his eyes flashing with curiosity at what others will contribute to this discussion. |

That was quite an earful, but I did indeed listen to every word. I did like Number 3 of you're large paragraph. I like the idea of making it public. Not letting the public decide, nessisarily, but allowing them to take part. However, the one fault with a "scenerio/what would you do if" question is that, any smart person will give the answer they believe to be right, weather it's true or not. While my contest is mostly for fun, it is related. The winner of my contest will need brains and skill, much like a potential authed crew leader will. Perhaps a series of tests for the person? Keep them on their toes. Sorry to seemingly stray away from the topic. My point is, if, someone is authed. Excuse me IF someone is authed, it should be a a choice that is not made lightly, and is taken under great scruteny. Pardon my lack of ability to say words correctly. |

| I think a few are getting a wee bit mixed. We're not going to auth someone just because they're Made. We're saying that our auths will only set up once they have got Made. | |

I certainly mean no disrespect here...I agree with Sprozza...having a one on one with each candidate seems too be the best way. As far as there not being Made Men to take the position well thats debatable and a totally different topic altogether. Haveing been in both SWYW and Oliver/Rhetts and Antonios famalies personally Im extremely confident they will make a well thought out and intelligent decision. Just the fact that they brought it to the rest of us for our opinion shows a certain strength in they're characters. Im confident they wont give the so-called city to the riff-raff we have seen in recent weeks. I like the idea of a Made Man being a CL...They're a few who are ready point wise, I wont get into here why they havent ranked as its not my place and doesnt belong on the streets....but will say this...they have been past CL and very good ones at that....more then proved they're honor loyalty and comminment and have run they're past families in the same way the current successful CL's are now. I can only speak for the 2 Ive had the pleasure serving...3 with the one Ive recently joined. The arguement that there are younger excellents canidates also holds water...there are many...but the likihood that some rougue looking for a 'minute of glory' will wipe him/her out and thus many members with them is highly liklely. |

The process of auth is something that has come to the streets many times. There are a wide variety of views as to how a person should receive auth. To me though there is only one way that auth should be considered. Crewleaders and their Right Hands should know at least a little about each of their family who have had the honour of Made bestowed upon them, and from that knowledge of the people they should have a fair idea of who would be a suitable candidate for auth and who is better as a family worker rather than a family head. Then by that stage they should have various conversations for those who have shown a promise for auth, maybe float some ideas past them about how they think a crew should be run. Find out what they think of others who are and have been crewleaders in the past. After all the last thing you want to do is auth someone who holds a grudge against one of the other present leaders. When it comes right down to it authing someone reflects on yourself. So you need to be sure that a potential auth isn't likely to bring shame on your name by turning out different to what you have told the other CL's they would be. |

Then if they say they want to run things a certain way and one of us doesn't like it, it will never get put into practice. When, in fact it could be an idea that would REALLY work. I'd rather not have them give too much away. I like surprises :) |

Sing just because you don't like something isn't a means to say they shouldn't be auth'd. Obviously if it's a big thing like looking after friends while punishing those they don't know they don't auth them. But while people have different ideas that some may not like or think proper as you said might infact work a hell of lot better than you'd care to admit to. But at the end of the day it's the acting godfathers who are gonna make the decision and if you can find someone that can come up with things everyone will like the kudos to you, but I'm pretty sure that no matter who you chose there will be some part of the way they think or act you are gonna disagree with. What you need to figure out right now is do you want someone in power your gonna disagree with enough to warrant bloodshed or do you want someone in power who can bounce an alternative to your and the other CL's ideas tactfully. |
