| How many people in your family? | Started by: FrankieFigs on Jan 02, '09 15:31 |

Here is interesting question I have. How many people are in your family? The answer seems simple enough, but I'm afraid its not that easy for me. Right now there are two other people in my family. That's right two. Is it force of habit when asked how many folks you have in your family to looks at the total numbers and spit that total out? Becoming a member of a family SHOULD be a HUGE deal, and I am afraid its just another day to some people. For the Boss AND the member. I think that this should change. My fellow family heads, how many times have you gotten this question from one of your associates "Is my button there?" I don't know about you but I hate this question, my first instinct is to promote then demote, make em earn it again...they obviously don't understand the importance of the position. Starting yesterday, my new year resolution is that I will treat the Made Man rank as it should be treated. Becoming Made Man is more than just a rank, its when you actually become a member of a family. For you Wise Guys and below, you belong to no family, you are Associated with a family and that is all. There is rumor that just because your dad knew your bosses dad that you are an auto promote for made man..I got news for you BFF's out there, I have a feeling that this will change...if your not putting in the effort, I don't care HOW close you are to the boss, you wont get the promo. Take my advice, bust some ass earn that spot in the family. Be proud of what you have achieved. I feel I have earned everything I have received. I never once asked if my button was there...i never once asked for auth. I was respectable and waited for it to be offered. This all coming from a family if a very close friend. I'm not saying people should do and act like me, the world is strange enough with just one of me, I'm just saying...take a look around...things are gonna change, better to be gradual about it then have to explain to your best friends why you think they don't deserve Made Man |

Furio begins to clap for Frankie. I agree with you one hundred percent,Frankie. I have always saw the Made Man rank as something to be earned and respected by all. Even if you don't agree with how that Made Man presents himself he is still a Made Man. Now maybe he did or didn't earn it but the Boss gave it to him so I have to respect it. Its much more comforting to know that when I see a MM badge on someone I know they earned it rather than them being gave the rank because there ancestors knew a person or two. |

No disrespect Sir Figs, but I find great irony that you comment about having only two members in your family, yet you currently let a Wise Guy bear the rank of "Left Hand Man." Does this mean that he is not a part of your family or that you consider FCUK even lower than this Wise Guy? |

MOWF stands in silence, listening to FrankieFigs speak. He is intrigued by the topic he has brought to the forefront. Frankie, I would have to say that I agree with you. It doesn't matter about friendships when it comes to the family. The rank of Made Man, and entrance into the family is hard work, and should be treated as such. There are certain things you should have to be able to do to even be considered for your promotion etc. It gets kind of irritating when people think they deserve Made Man right away from the time they enter our world. It's just ridiculous, yes you have a bloodline history etc. but you are a new person to the world. You are not your father/mother. You should have to prove yourself much like your father/mother did. I'm glad we have a chance to discuss this, Frankie, I don't think many people understand the importance of Family... MOWF shakes Frankies hand and continues on with his daily business. |

Dear Mr FF, We go back... WAAAY back, back to when we both worked behind the counter of that mass produced electic device store. And I love you man, I really do (and no, Digger and Brian, that does NOT mean he can have my bud) So where was I... Ah, yes, your recent statement about what and who family really is. I love you man so much (holds the beer up high in the air so that Gay can't steal it away), b/c you KNOW what its about. From the moment you told me "I'm outta of this damn rat race" and you slammed your radio house badge down on the counter and headed out for a life of crime.... I knew you would make it big. so errrm... yes, about family. I've always seen eye to eye with you about this matter, being made is what BRINGS you in to the family, its just the start of something great together, a special type of relationship, a one that is marked in blood, the blood of life. But along with that, it also releases those who are under MadeMan, well they are not and nor do they have the priviligies that come with being Made. The question is, when things happen, when the fit hits the shan, will you stand up for, say a Goomba in your crew?family? who has problems, or will you have him work it out, b/c until he has proven himself to you, in that way and perhaps in others, he still does not warrant the same degree of protection that you would afford your blood family. (holds up the beer, high away from everyone else and guzzles it down with one might pull). Ahhh. Refreshing thoughts! |

Thats right my LHM is not a member of my family and he has to earn it just like the rest do. If you recall my LHM position was given away to a contest winner, what i am doing is taking someone that has no background and as far as I know no leadership skills and mold him, like I said he needs to earn it. Now, keep in mind that there is such thing as situational authority, and after reading ChristmasPast's entry, I have all the confidence in the world that in my and Ire absence he would know what the right path would be for just any issue. I have instructed him to use common sense. A quality in him that will help him to become a member of my family. |

Verily understood, good sir. I did not recall this contest, but upon your recommendations and good research, I follow your logic. Another question for you, another one meant with no disrespect at all: Ire, your RHW, (who is a fox as she and I have had sexual relations on many occasions despite all insistences upon my sexual orientation) to my best knowledge was not promoted to a Made Woman position by you and instead received her button from another family. Does this affect any sort of "family" concept to you? |

Fu-manju, I will stand up for my associates, if I believe they are in the right. Loyalty is important no matter if you are family or an associate, running jobs for me and another Boss is not good for business and I will get rid of an associate of that nature. Its hard to find good help these days, so when you find a good associate, you want to hang on to them and rely on them like they rely on you. The circumstance dictates how I would react. I've always said, that I would like to know how I would react in a certain situation, but I am realistic enough to know, I won't know how I would react until the situation happened. Passion drives me, not procedure. Procedures are guidelines and passion just isn't a fruit in a girly drink... |

| What's even more irritating is when someone decides to enter our thing, they agree and accept the promotion. They may have earned the trust of the administration of the respective family, but when they are unable to perform and properly represent our thing... it's distressing. There is no hard feelings in declining the prospect of the open book. | |

BK style, hearing all of this decides to throw his hat in the ring. He had been listening long enough & believes it's now his turn to speak on the matter. Signori. Mafiosi. Fratelli. I have heard some good points on this matter and I appreciate and thank Boss Figs for broaching the subject. I agree completely that the rank of Made Man is indeed more than just a rank. It is an honor and privilege to be officially invited into this thing of ours, this cosa nostra and be a member of a famiglia. The honor is not one that should be taken lightly or thought of to be a right. All who aspire to getting their button must be willing and prepared to earn it completely. I do not believe such honors should be handed out because of any sentimentality or favoritism that is unjustly rewarded. After all, favoritism in and of itself is not wrong if it is earned by the person in favor. And until you have been invited into our inner ranks, you are not a proper member of a famiglia. I do however disagree with a couple of things brought up in this discussion. For one I do not believe it to be appropriate to deny an invite into a family. If you are associated with us than your goal MUST be to be inducted into our ranks. Unless of course you cannot trace your lineage back to Italy or Sicily. I find it to be horribly disrespectful for someone whom has been given protection by my Don or any other crew leader for that matter to spit in his face and turn down the offer of Made Man. If he cannot and or does not live up to his expectations after being a Man of Honor, especially after having earned the offer to begin with, then he should be properly dealt with. Lastly, as I have mentioned in another forum in these streets, I feel that positions of power should only be bestowed onto Made Men. It is highly disrespectful to make a member of your famiglia and then pass him over for promotion to a leadership position for an associate however worthy he may be or close to the hierarchy he may be. If he is worth his stones he will be made in due time and can be thrown into the mix at that time. Afer all, if someone is brought into this cosa nostra then they should be trusted and thought of to be worthy of inclusion into our inner workings and therefore have the makeup of a leader. If they do not obtain these qualities, then they should not be made to begin with. I apologize for taking up so much of all of your time. Forgive me and thank you for your respective ears. At that, BK respectfully steps back into the ranks of those who have gathered to await the imputs of the next Man of Honor to speak. |

Mirage joined a few gentleman talking on the street. It's good to hear speeches that teach young members of our thing about out traditions, but it's a bit of a contradiction to say Made Men are family, but give more authority to lower ranks. Why should family members have to take orders from an associate? |

Wouldn't also be just as disrespectful to take someone OUT of a position they held before anyone else acquired the rank of made man, just because their is a made man about? I agree that trusting an individual enough to make them, I should trust them enough to do the job of LHM, but just because they are qualified, does that mean they are the best man for the job? There is no affirmative action in this family, best man for the job, gets the job. I'm only speaking as devils advocate here since, like I said before, my LHM position was given away to help an unknown into a position he may not have gotten a chance at because the position was already filled by a capable candidate. |

Why let a 15 year old drive a car? They gotta learn sometime, right? and they aren't alone, they have a qualified person in the passenger seat. |

I'm sorry, I'll spell it out for. They will take orders from an Associate because I placed that associate in charge, and that associate now possesses situational authority. I already mentioned that, I thought you were looking for an elaboration. |

Phantom listens intently to his fellow leader before speaking. To be perfectly honest, Frankie, though my "less than Mades" may not be family, in some cases I treat them as if they were due to the way they present themselves within the family. Now, I'm not talking arrogance, but rather the more basic intricacies of being a MEMBER of a family. I have one Wise Guy in particular who admittedly does more for me than I ever did for my family at Made. That's not to say I didn't do anything, but he really works his ass off. Anyway, my point I don't feel there should be a set in stone rank requirement to be part of the family. In a place as melting-pot esque as this thing of ours, in my opinion, we have to wait and see what each member brings, and when WE feel as leaders they're part of the family. |

Slamming down his cigarette as he steps forward, DCIAC claps slowly for Frankie... I agree Frankie. The way this world of ours works, the young ones have to join a crew quickly, or soon find themselves dead. This, in part, is why I've always liked the fact that throughout this thing of ours, they are referred to as crews, even though many people mistakenly refer to them as families. I feel the family is Made Man and above, no offense meant to lower ranking members having I myself just been promoted to the rank of Made Man, and I didn't even know I had been Made until I saw the congratulations in my mailbox. However, to Phantom, POD, and MOWF's credit, their fathers had put my father through hell when he was Made, so I think they figured I'd see it coming and not be fully surprised. I admit that I have been guilty of asking if my promotion was up, but usually in the case of being picked on in the coffee shops for being a lower ranking member. Anyway, back to family, being Made or above is a privilege. That's why the upper management of the crew has to promote each one specifically in my opinion. I knew that due to my lineage I would be promoted ASAP, and not to gloat, but I've earned it anyway by working my butt off. However, I will admit that I do wonder a little if the bosses feel I earned it, or if it was just because I know the leaders outside of this thing of ours. Either way, a very valid point, and it is good to see that you understand and appreciate the omerta part of this thing of ours, as my bosses do as well. You're not strange, you're just ahead of the curve. As is his custom, DCIAC flips his card to Frankie, which slides halfway into Frankie's suit pocket... Next time you've got a thought, give me a call, I'd love to hear it, I aspire to be the first Crew Leader of my lineage! ...but by the time Frankie pulls the card out and reads it, DCIAC is gone with a flash from his holstered .308 and a puff of smoke from his fresh cigarette. |

| Frankie, No offense mate. But this whole thing is a total contradiction. Pretty sure we all see it. Its nice that you believe we should earn our position in a family. But if your saying only those who have ranked high enough in the family have earned it then how did your associate, with no background, earn it? You cant just have a competition giving away that position and then create a speech such as this. | |

That kinda makes the whole getting your button thing and being part of the family less special. "Here's your button, Johnny. Welcome to the family. Go take orders from that guy over there who hasn't earned his button yet." |

Muqtada listens intently, knowing full well that since he has a "Wise Guy" as his RHW this discussion should involve him. After taking the time to listen to some of the other comments, he decides to speak up. I feel there is much merit to the position taken by FrankieFigs and others on this matter. It is entirely true that there is a difference between who is part of your "family" proper and who is part of your "crew" or "associated" with your family. Whenever I have sent an invitation, I have welcomed thugs to become the newest "associate" of La Fratellanza dei Assassina. They haven't proved themselves to me enough to be a true family member. There is a clear divide in my mind between my family members — people I trust with my life — and my associates — those I would trust with reasonably sized sums of money. Those people ranked Made Man and up with the "sponsor: Muqtada" label are all members of my family. You will not achieve the rank of Made Man in my family without proving yourself to be of the utmost reliability, loyalty, and trustworthiness. However, I don't think that is everyone in my family. I've seen several goombas in my day take a bullet for their boss and survive. There's no question about their loyalty at that point. Did they get made the next day? No. Hell, they still had to work through Earner and Wise Guy before they got there. That's because the Gods decreed that they had to earn more money or spend more time in the family before they could be given that honor, regardless of how much their boss might want to give it to them. Likewise with my RHW: She could clean out my bank account, kill everyone in my family, and leave me with nothing when I sleep. But I'm not worried about that in the least. I have absolute faith in her to run my family as I would. She is a member of my family, whether a "Made Woman" button is pinned to her shirt or not. Being a true member of my family is about whether that trust exists. Sometimes the way things are is different from the way you want things to be, and in those cases you might see my family members ranked less than Made Man. So all in all, as far as my family goes all Made Men are family, but not all family must be Made Men and up. On the other hand, I have the utmost respect for FrankieFigs and any others who wish to hold their definition of family to an even higher standard. It is their family to run, not mine. |
