Rounding the corner, MacLeod hears an interesting discussion. Listening to it, his ears perk up at the conclusion of the original speaker's second address. "Be who you are. Don't tell me who you are. Don't ask me who I think you are. Be it. " Stepping forward, MacLeod clears his throat as he waits Pardon me, sir, but I'm a bit confused. You tell everyone to be themselves. To not talk about it, or base their idea of themselves off of the opinions of others. To just do it. Yet here you are, telling people how you want them to be. O wait. I forgot. I'm supposed to be an individual. MacLeod looks around the crowd. Diving into them, he emerges with a dark suit, a cigar, and a flask. Good- now I can be a nonconformist, since I have what everyone else has. Also, I should speak angrily and bitterly about the state of the world and act like I don't care what everyone else thinks. Spying a young man entertaining people in the street with a story, MacLeod grabs his pencil and breaks it over his knee. BAH! HUMBUG! This is the mafia, son! Go do something gritty. Not that I care. Takes a swig of his flask. Then MacLeod sees a couple older members of the community drinking and laughing at a neighborhood bar. Spitting out his drink and dowsing his cigar, MacLeod sprints over to them. WHAT THE HELL DO YOU TWO THINK YOU'RE DOING? Be an individual! No, not like that! Like ME! Also, you would be better if you were ugly. Hands them flasks to drink from and fake scars to wear on their faces. Disgusted, lights a cigar. This place is ri-goddamn-diculous. I am conclusively so much better than all of you. Shakes off the flask, cigar, and scowl. Now, all kidding aside. Composes himself and restores his demeanor to his usual gravitas. You can't demand individuality from the community and disregard it when you disagree with it. Perhaps you should apply a wider lens to your view of the world, since it the differing personalities and styles of this place that allow anyone to be unique, special, and admired. I certainly don't agree with all the behaviors I see men and women partaking in the streets, but it is this contrast that has helped establish precisely what I do believe it. Without that personal variety, we are ultimate nothing. |

MacLeod, there's seems to be a misunderstanding of my meaning. I'm not sure the word "individualism" ever escaped my lips. Take a closer look. The term "Be who you are" is in reference to running around the streets shouting that you're sexy. Or you're tough. I don't care if you're the same as Joe Blow standing behind you. Being similar or different from one another was never part of my argument. Try and follow along. Although I imagine it's difficult when you only care to catch the end of one's speech, and disregard the first point and every response there after. I'd applaud you for taking time to make your response if I thought it actually pertained to what people were talking about. Sarcasm does not build one's respect. Nor display his honor. You say you want the mafia to be unique, special and admired. I can't say anything between my spurts of laughter. |

I'll agree to a misunderstanding of meaning. Perhaps you didn't say what you meant. Regardless, when you tell people to reject all external attempts at definition but instead rely only on internal self-determination... that is individualism, sir. But if, as your reply suggests, what you really mean to say with that whole "Be who you are" bit is that you have a problem with a disparity between a person's appearance and reality, then why didn't you just say that? And if so, then why are you demanding that people start pretending certain things? On a side note, I've never stated a reply to any topic that I haven't read fully, and never will. Let me make that absolutely clear. Misinterpretation is within the realm of possibility, but never apathy, and I resent the implication, as well as your reliance on ad hominem arguments when you can't make your points. Also, sarcasm can certainly build and gain respect. Sarcasm is a form of humor that even a "cold hearted son of bitch" can appreciate. But perhaps you just take issue with the target of this sarcasm. First off, the word "mafia" never "escaped my lips" with regards to "unique, special, and admired". Perhaps you misunderstood. Rather, I discuss individuals. We must be unique, or we have no minimal value to our leader. Ditto for special, as any accomplished mafioso will attest to. And admiration is the external recognition of interior honor. Honor, I believed, you mentioned as being acceptable, so I'm not quite sure what you have against it here. You said "I can't say anything between my spurts of laughter." Then that makes two of us. |

I've said what I meant. The misinterpretation is on your end. No one else seemed to have a problem with it. But instead, you choose to argue with me about what I meant. If my words have been confused as arguing with you, then correct yourself. But, sadly this topic seems to have died as it was turned away from it's purpose. A fact that saddens me more than anything. It began with such fire and angst from men like PG and now dies down to make room for story time. Finishes the last drop of his flask, and walks away from the near empty street |

There has always been a certain amount of "unmobsterlike" behavior in this thing of ours. Going way back in the historical archives, I have read about mafia water balloon fights in the streets, not to mention several unspeakable acts involving midgets, goats, and llamas. Those things are just a way to blow off steam. Acting tough all the time can get stressful. However, we must be mindful of our occupation and not let the scale weigh too heavily on the "fun and frivolous" side. While this odd behavior has always existed, it seems now to be the norm rather than the exception. It may be true that you are all retarded and incapable of coherent thought, but we must try with all earnestness not to stray too far from our roots. If our behavior makes a mockery of this secret society, we will cease to be the mafia and will become something else. I don't know about the rest of you, but I traveled a long distance overseas to be part of this thing of ours. Not to be part of something else. |
