No You Aren't! Started by: KingOfOnePercent on Jan 28, '09 17:52
The bullets were flying when a man stormed angry into the darkened office where all the Enforcers were gathered.

"God Damnit, they're everywhere. I need a pro"

The grating, irritated voice seemed to echo around the room, the atmosphere becoming more thick; the tension still more palpable. A senior hitter looked over at this angered whippersnapper with a sneer that suggested mockery and disdain.

"What do you mean, you need a pro? Ever stop to think the Boss may need one, or even the Right Hand Man? You're a hitter boy, yet you don't know that the family comes first; what the fuck is wrong with you?"

"Well...I need a pro"

KingOfOnePercent closed the diary he was reading from and took a deep breath.

Ladies and Gentleman, I'm sure you, as I, have seen many variations of the scene I just described to you; gun toting morons running around like the 'big I am' because they have a few notches on their pistol barrel. You see, it's just the natural order. A collection of morons who, despite having defied the odds to rack up some kills, are too stupid to know what being a hitter actually means.

Don't get me wrong, my spectacles are not so rose tinted that I would suggest this is a problem we have only just started to see; it has always been a problem that some individuals will see themselves to be bigger than their family. However, this does seem to be something that we are seeing more and more of late.

I see a few faces in the crowd looking slightly confused, so for the benefit of the masses and at great personal expense, I have compiled a handy questionnaire to help you discern if you are a proper hitter!

Do you pickpocket?

If you just answered yes, you are not a hitter. Hitters must be dedicated. Hitters must be disciplined. If you are not ready to take a shot on behalf of the family (except in circumstances where you've just shot) then you are not good enough to be a hitter.

Do you fly for drugs?

If you just answered yes, you are not a hitter. Hitters must be dedicated. Hitters must be disciplined. In the average 50 man HQ there should be roughly be 40 people flying for drugs, so the hitters don't need to. Hitters fly for targets or they keep their flight open, they do not waste 2 hours on making a quick buck.

Ever Rogued in peace time?

If you just answered yes, you are not even a decent Mobster, never mind a hitter. The only time when rouging is excusable, commendable even; is when one faces certain death to go bold in the name of their deceased leader during a war. If you or any of your bloodline rogued just because they were a bit bored, or whatever shit motive that happens to be tossed into the mix, then you are not, nor will you ever be, a real hitter.

Have you ever shot a sponsored target 'by mistake'?

If you just answered yes, you are not a hitter. Real hitters pay attention to detail, measure twice, cut once. Measure a thousand times if you have to, because there is no excuse a real hitter can provide when he accidentally shoots something his family rules tell him not to.

Do you walk around with a bulging wallet?

If you just answered yes, guess what, you're not a hitter. Hitters are always, as previously mentioned, the most dedicated members of a family. After all, these are the people who train up a gun knowing they will be the first ones pencilled in for cement shoes when a war starts. If you are content to stroll around a Rich man rather than give total dedication to your boss, you're not a proper hitter. I expect I will receive the most criticism for this; but ultimately, if you can't trust someone to pay his dues, how can you expect them to stand in front of a bullet for you? This, of course, brings me delightfully to the next question.

Would you take a bullet for your Boss?

If you just answered no, tough break, you're not a hitter. Hitters don't train so they can wave gun and willy around, shouting about how great they are. They train for their family. If the best thing they can do for their family is lay down their life to save the Boss's, then so be it. This means, incidentally, if you are like our unknown soldier above who asks for a pro at the commencement of war without first checking if the Boss is safe, then you are not a hitter.

Hopefully, this rough guide will help you with any miniature identity crisis you may be having and you will emerge as a better Mobster as a result. In advance to anyone who found this questionnaire useful, your welcome; it is my pleasure.

So are you saying Edinburgh was not a real hitter?
Report Post Tip
Nope Edinburgh wasn't a real hitter.

Does that answer your question?

I was actually hoping for "Edinburgh was a stupid fat cunt who is beyond uselessness" but yes that will do!

Okay

Now i will go with you are a stupid Canadian cunt who is useless np np

Most of these should apply to EVERY member of the family. If someone were to answer "no" to "Would you take a bullet for your boss?", or "yes" to "Do you walk around with a bulging wallet?", I don't believe he/she should ever be allowed into the family. It's essential that the "Boss/Family > Me" mentality is there, otherwise, you shouldn't be in that family.

I believe Edinburgh shot himself around the time your Great Grandfather reached Consigliere!

Ah wait.. *scratches head*

That didn't happen

No but I know of a someone's grandfather shooting one of my grandfather's bodyguards on accident when attempting a pickpocket.

I do have to agree with KingOfOnePercent and Cypher on these points. Both are very valid and very true to the status of a true hitter. Maybe those that think they are hitters should take these to heart and learn from those that are. It is a hard life and very demanding but also sometimes can be rewarding in personal achievement and in aiding and protecting your family.

Being a hitter is not, and never should be, about personal achievement and it's where most people some to be getting stuck.

Boasting about the number of people you have killed is the only personal achievement you could claim from being a hitter and if you're shouting that about then you really are quite simple.

There is nothing to achieve by being a hitter. You're the first to die during a war and have to work the hardest in your family but never recieve any credit for it. Being a hitter is all about protecting the boss and the family. Nothing more, nothing less.

The best a hitter can hope for is to step into battle, shoot whoever your boss commands even though you know full well that you will die for it and accepting the death with dignity. THAT is the closest a hitter will EVER get to being a hero.

We seem to have a mix of intelligent mobsters who care about the conversation at hand and those who are just here to listen to the speech and then poke fun at late leaders. I applaud the former, and shun the latter. Unless it was KOOP's intent.

So, I'm going to assume that the purpose of this interesting speech was to inform those around us, and it did so quite well. I agree, KOOP. Many people forget the true meaning of being a hitter. They think since they can hit the broad side of a barn they are above everyone else. And therefore can do what they please. Very commendable to bring this out here. I think we're all guilty of satisfying our own needs once in a while, but your focus and dedication should be given to your leader.

Your words ring true, sir, and should be required reading for all who join this thing of ours.

.

I suppose it depends on how you define "hero" really. No, no ticker taper parades or people naming schools after you; but to those whom you serve, presuming you chose wisely, you will always be a hero, oftentimes an unknown hero; but a hero just the same.

You see, whether or not I know who the family hitters are or get to shake their hands or buy them a drink really isn't what's important. What is important is that I know that they are there and I know the sacrafice that they make, even to the point of laying down their own lives in defense of my Don or possibly even myself. To me they are the very greatest heros around. So just in case some of you are listening and I never get the chance to tell you your face I'm very gratefull to have had the opportunity to say it here. Thank you, thank you thank you, a hundred-thousand time thank you. Words can not express the gratitude and admiration that I feel. Again, thank you.

Flicking his burnt out cigarette as he walks up to KOOP, DrTran addresses what he has just heard...

Overall I'd agree with you, and I would also agree with Cypher, that most of those are just part of being a dedicate member of a family. I am known in my bloodline for either spending my money on shoot range trips, or paying it up to the boss in the form of a donation. I fly where the targets are, and hope that the drug prices follow. And by no means do I consider myself or any of my fathers expert hitters, or even more than hitters who understand how it works, but lacked the luck to get more targets to stand in front of their gun.

However, I think it would be ridiculous to be a totally one sided mobster. After all, what good is the ability to hit a quarter from a mile away if someone can easily walk up behind you, steal your wallet, and slit your throat before you ever knew what hit you? And let's be real, most commonly we all know far enough in advance that times of peace are coming to an end that small amounts of PPing or strictly drug running are not that crazy of a venture, even for hitters in a family. Remember, the mafia has one overwhelming goal, to make money. Having a group of true hitters that earn very little money is like paying for life insurance in this thing of ours. Even if you needed it, chances are no one would be around to collect on it.

Anyway, that is my input. If you want to be the best hitter in this thing of ours, what KOOP has laid before us is probably your best bet, but don't expect it to make you the best mafioso. And in reference to the numbers you mentioned, if I were a crew Leader, I'd feel much safer having my crew earn me money so I could support more bodyguards, as opposed to taking a 20% income cut just so I know my death would be avenged. Again, if I have enough bodyguards to not die to begin with, there's no death for my hitters to avenge.

Turning to walk away, DrTran pulls his card out of his pocket and flips it to KingOfOnePercent, having it stick between the pages of the diary he was reading from...

You make good points, and you have strong arguments for them. I admire that KOOP!

...but by the time KOOP had looked up, DrTran was gone; a puff of smoke and a glint of light off his holstered .308 the only signs he had ever been there at all...
Report Post Tip
You've got to be kidding me, right?

As a Crew Leader, you'd feel much safer with 50 money makers and no hitters? Sure you'll have some nice BG's, but what happens when another crew comes along and starts shooting them at their leisure, and you can't do anything to defend yourself? Good luck with that big man.

After all, what good is the ability to hit a quarter from a mile away if someone can easily walk up behind you, steal your wallet, and slit your throat before you ever knew what hit you

I won't lie, this statement offends me. It highlights the exact attitude that I'm speaking about. Me me me me me. Being a hitter is not about staying alive forever, it is not about fending off pickpockets either. It's about being good enough to shoot what your Boss tells you, when he tells you. If that means your defensive skills take a hit, then so be it.

You almost have a point regarding being a totally one sided mobster, but which do you think is more useful to a crew leader; 10 members who have mediocre earnings and mediocre guns, or 5 members who have fantastic guns and 5 members who have fantastic earnings?
Report Post Tip

I do wonder who you are referring to there when you mention lack of intelligent mobsters. I also wonder which late leader you are on about since as I recall the legendary Edinburgh wasn't a leader at the time, he was a former Right hand who had difficulty aiming properly. A legend in his own right who following his unfortunate actions brought about the phrase "Doing a Clause".

On the subject at hand, KOOP from a line of top quality street speakers I commend yet another fine speech. I could't agree more with all of what you say. We live in a time where quite literally any tom, dick or harry can train a gun and fire off a few rounds. Where as in the past only the most dedicated individuals were willing to put the time and effort into doing this. However with witnesses now coming forward to missed shots the chances of rogues appearing has greatly diminished.

DrTran, it would be folly for a crew leader to believe that having bodyguards makes them immortal. Having a strong hitsquad allows a crewleader to utilise their will when dealing with other people and offers a far stronger element of protection in the fact that any family attacking is likely to lose vast numbers.
Report Post Tip
KOOP, you read things much to literally, and I'm surprised you haven't realized that figurative language is part of this thing of ours. I didn't say I wanted no hitters, but would I rather have 20% incomer so my hitters can have 2 or 3 more IA kills? No I would not. Secondly, even though the sentence I wrote about the quarter and throat slitting was talking about one person, that one person was a metaphor for a whole crew. The pickpocketing part was irrelevant, it was just emphasizing the stealth aspect of the situation, and that's how take downs happen most of the time nowadays. I've seen take downs where three quarters of the crew was dead in the first three minutes.

Nowadays, if a crew is going to be taken down, chances are it is going to be well orchestrated by another crew. You know who they target first? The people the know that are hitters in that family, and nothing in this thing of ours is ever a secret as we hope it to be, even if NO ONE opens their mouth. You know what IS going to slow down the process? It's not the fact that you have "true hitters," because they'll be dead in the first wave. BGs however will slow them down, and MAYBE the Crew Leader in question will live long enough to receive support, if it can be found. MAYBE.

You go and accuse me and say I'm a "me me me" mobster, when what I was talking about was what I would prefer as the best to keep MY family safe if I was a crew leader. After all, crew leaders are allowed to decide what they think is best for their family aren't they? That doesn't make them "selfish" or "self-centered," that makes them a good CL with the guts to do what they think is best.

I never said I would want NO hitters, but to say that they almost essentially give up on any profit just to get in a few more IAs is ridiculous. The other part of my statement that makes a difference is that you have to think of a crew as a living, breathing thing. How things are run and how you want your mafioso working and training changes depending on the situations around you, how big your crew is, how long you have been around, etc. And I suppose, because I have thought about it before(not that I would think any of my bloodline had earned the right to be authed), my point of view may be more that of a young auth who is trying to get things started as opposed to a crew who has been around the block many times and has enough good earners AND hitters that they still have plenty of profit, AND that having a group ONLY training their guns isn't wasting time on hitters following the "true hitter" model, but whom are unproven.
Report Post Tip
Well, according to this, to be a hitter, you have to spend most of your day on your duff, doing precisely nothing. Sounds real fun and all. Only the people who don't want to do anything can be hitters, if you try to do something, you are not a hitter. Or, at least that's what I've gathered.

Chill, man. Its not all about being strung out all the time. I should know, the doc makes me come in twice a week for the same reason.

Though its true that hitters will need to be more attentive and dedicated than most.
Report Post Tip
Sat on your duff doing nothing?

You fly into a city having heard there is a target there. You go and look for your target. Good, he is at home. You then scout the local neighbourhood for a decent firing position. You and everyone else knows that you're not alone. You have to get the shot out before someone else does. If you don't then that bum will be going with someone else to the docks.

After the shot you get out of town quickly. Even if you did not hit you will be a suspect to the fuzz. You fly on to another city and repeat the process while hoping there is money to be made. I have known hitters who have worn rags because the flights to targets are costing to much to buy a new suit.
