GAME CHANGE: Districts & Cities - Your Choice Started by: Squishy on Apr 03, '14 00:53

We have opened up two new cities, LA and LV.  These two new cities have been launched with 3 districts each.  Currently, there is no claim on these cities by anyone, so from this point forward it is 100% up to the users to choose how they run, by enforcing their will they can make it a 1 godfather city, or 1 godfather per district.  This is a blank canvas and every single can, if they choose, help shape it by what ever means they think will be the most effective.

Starting now, any time a district goes 1 week without occupation, it will be closed if needed to bring that particular city down towards the goal of 3 districts.  (If there are plans already set in motion that will run a little longer than 1 week, please see me to discuss this)

Flight times have been altered to the following:

Sister cities = 3 hour flight time.  (PH to NY, CH to DT, LA to LV and the opposite)

Coast to Center = 6 hour flight time. (PH/NY to CH/DT, LA/LV to CH/DT and the opposite)

Coast to Coast = 12 hour flight time. (PH/NY to LA/LV and the opposite)

We will monitor drug prices over the next few days to further balance things out.

Some achievements are based on "Do X in every city".  Adding two new cities means these achievements did get more difficult, but all your current work is still there, despite the % of completion looking lower.  I will be adjusting the rewards for these achievements shortly to reflect the added 50% more work needed.

Report Post Tip

If neither of the cities have any headquarters set up, will the cities possibly shut down?

Report Post Tip

The shutting down is for districts of any city that has unoccupied districts over the quantity of 3.

Report Post Tip

So the new cities would remain no matter what?

Report Post Tip

I quite like this change to be honest. More like the good old days. As they say variety is the spice of life.

Report Post Tip

Squishy, a private flight between DT and LA is showing as 12 hours ...

Report Post Tip

Whilst I love the idea of the game returning to 6 districts I have to ask.

With user base currently does not support this number of districts, redistributing leaders to fill these vacancies; as I am guessing is the option that is preferred by the gods is going to be an incredibly costly one. I think if the gods offered a sort of "opening special" on relocating in terms of repairing forts and buying HQ's they would find the user base much more able to afford and accommodate this transition.

One reservation however, with regards to flight times. I am very much of the opinion that the game would need to return to it's 2 hour flight timer system. When Wack and PP become district specific it was made a lot more difficult to find people during times of war and with flight timers the cost of war increased 10 fold. Now you have added two new places to hide; wars will be heavily weighted to those that have 200million to spend on private flights bouncing around from city to city, and; not to mention the length of time added to wars. You will literally have wars that (assuming people are bored enough) could carry on for weeks.

Report Post Tip

Those 2 are pretty much the same place tbh. If you're on Paradise, you're on The Strip. Summerlin is basically a 5 minute drive from Paradise. But if you wanted a more realistic and reasonable district, one should be Fremont Street. It was the first "Strip" or "Downtown" Vegas ever had. It wouldn't feel right without it. It's still there and people call it the "Old Downtown".

Also, Boulder City is a consideration.

Just throwing that out there!

Report Post Tip

To the contrary I think the current system is slightly tilted towards the underdog with how many districts are available to be open - it's very possible to drain a staggering amount of money with a bit of tact, and I think, while I've been an opponent of districts in the past, a good dynamic to the game that enabled more skill and strategy to be utilized other than constantly refreshing for hours on end during a war - it makes it much more of a team effort than it has been in the past.  Old money being depleted during a war is a good thing for the site as a whole, generally - it evens the playing field.

With how much time is put into people's accounts, war should absolutely be a chore that isn't something to take lightly, and while I think the idea of a week-long war is extremely exaggerated for all but the most absurd scenarios, I'm all for the idea of bringing back the old days where the usual war wasn't exactly a cut and done deal done during an afternoon.  The layout in cities gives leaders a choice - higher revenues and a quick hub to every city in the game, or a fortress that's not easy to get in or out of.  Reinstating the old flight times completely neuters a very decent element of the new cities.

Report Post Tip
Week long wars are far from exaggerated. As has been my experience certain players are extremely stealthy and are incredibly difficult to locate. In the old days there was no hiding, we have 21 districts to hide in now across 6 cities. If you are patient enough you can stretch a war almost endlessly. When you run out of money for private flights; which you will eventually. You are going to be looking at up to a 12 hour wait to fly to someone who you are going to battle to find. You could spend a week flying and never end up in the same city.

With regards to making the districts cheaper to inhabit. This was a drastic unexpected change thrusted upon the users with no time to plan for it. I imagine the gods would like to see the cities inhabited, they wouldn’t have gone through all the effort to put them in for them to be happy for us to leave them uninhabited. I love the new opportunities it creates for people, what I am however saying is if the gods would like the userbase to help facilitate the reinstatement of these cities and districts then make it easier for us.

A HQ is 14mil (13.7 or whatever) and full fortifications are close to 60. That is basically a cost of $70,000,000 per new family x 6 districts = $420,000,000 out of the database. Not sure about you but I don’t know too many people with that lying around. Even if you consider existing families moving (and a number just have prior to this) you are still looking at around $210,000,000 for the lot.

With regards to flight timers, the change from a pure calculation to a standardised one equalised the disparity between NY/PHI runs and CHI/DT runs. It is something that was long overdue IMO and I am a big supporter of it. The issue is there simply isn’t the userbase currently to support 12 hour flights, 21 districts in a war environment.

I really like the changes that are being implemented. The stat one in particular I feel adds a huge dynamic to the game and a large bit of excitement and a greater sense of importance to new ranks. This addition is something I like and support, but something I wish we had a bit more time to prepare for. If the intent of this was purely as a money drain then it may be very successful or not successful at all. The reason cities were closed if you recall was because they were poorly populated. Unless you want LA/LV simply to be cities where people are too scared to log off in then perhaps some assistance/incentives to help us populate them.

The gods clearly want to grow the game; I completely support that. This is an expansion that definitely allows that to happen. Flight times do need to be reviewed at this current stage; I don’t feel it is feasible with the current number of users.

Assuming the standard structure of GF+Full Crew Per District at 21 Districts = 51 (11+40) x 21 = 1071 Members to fully populate on standard model. At a cost of $210,000,000 Per City (3 districts).

Ultimately it’s not up to us what the landscape of the game is going to be; but we do control how it is populated and managed. The gods made the decision to implement, we can offer our thoughts on the process and possible complications; I like to think the game is sort of in a constant beta; revisions, additions and commentary is essential for the gods to make alterations and fixes going forward. I recall in the old days the gods would give the crewleaders a heads up on things like this so when they were implemented we were prepared.

I do appreciate that today is a long way away from the 10 crewleaders (sometimes less) we had in those days, and the communication has broken down a bit; perhaps it’s time to look at repopulating #crewleader and working together on things like this going forward?

(Disclaimer: These are my thoughts and my thoughts alone; they speak only to my personal experiences and perceptions based on over a decade of play. You can disagree with me, I won’t be offended. I speak only for myself here in a purely OOC context; not for district, city or game)

Numbers4Glory,

As far as the financial aspects of moving - moving is optional.  Right now there isnt a whole lot of financial incentive from the other 3 cities to move, but your particular city would stand to stop hemorrhaging potential profits.  You guys have been at your CA limit since the war, so you are probably looking at maybe quite a few hundred mill in CA losses per month, tack on DFPs, and it becomes quite the incentive.

One of the contributing reasons to open up the other two cities prematurely is a selfish one - I ran out of patience from NY members complaining about the overcrowding and lack of CAs and upward mobility.  So this move allows NY to benefit greatly from it over other cities - NY members who are growing very discontent with the state of NY can move, making the remaining NY a happier one.  Or NY by all means has the power to move some of their families over there to grow their empire for expansion reasons and additional income.  At the end of the day, because its an optional move, not required, and those that chose to go will benefit from it, I can't offer any assistance financially.

Report Post Tip

I am interested to see how this develops, but ultimately a little skeptical that we will see anything other than the traditional approach taken with them.

Report Post Tip

I love the initiative taken by the gods but like Clive...am a little skeptical as to whether this will cause any actual change.

Report Post Tip
My apologies.

My reasoning was working off the assumption that it was your wish to see them populated for the purposes of game expansion.

Complaints from NY Seem a bit foolhardy in the sense that a number of people are moving out in the next few days.

Apologies.
Report Post Tip
Love this, but it does pose some potentially concerning things... Which have already been noted, so I shall not expand. For the most part though I'm really glad this happened.
Report Post Tip
Heh, just noticed that the business district threads are all still there from days of old.
Report Post Tip

Very excited about how this will turn out. Hopefully these cities won't be shut down after a week of inactivity. The only thing that annoys me is the reset of the "every city" achievements.

Report Post Tip

I have an idea... bring back St Louis & New Orleans... remove the districts... one Godfather per city.. 4 crews per city... I mean... just saying...

Report Post Tip

I think we already went over that issue and eventually it was decided against.

Report Post Tip

Haven't been here for a long time, so i don't know a lot about the history of those cities.

This community has been asking for these cities, and now these cities are here. The change is probably for the best, only time will tell.

It is certainly though too early to ask for more cities, don't you think?
