I agree with Identity on this. It's one thing to send out an invite to a member of a fallen leader in your city during a war. It's a completely different thing to be sending out invites left and right to new civilians who have never even contacted you. Whether it's during a war time or not, it's generally not a smart idea just to throw invites out to just anyone. If you suspect someone is new and doesn't know their way around this life, sending a mail to them is perfectly fine in my eyes. Get to know someone first, but to try and member whore like that? No thank you. Personally, I like to know what kind of mobster i'm dealing with before I employ them to work for me, or my boss. |

Popa. I'm not sure if I'm defending the CL more than just attacking the total lack of class of the OP. It is not our job to question how other people wage war, but for many people it certainly is not just hourly, specially with the body count, and subsequent flood of new people off the boats.
In any case, it is not the place and the manner to criticize a CL. |

Adrian, this is the OOC forum, exactly the place to criticise such things. The alternative is to do it in game and face the consequences should there be any. I'd happily do either though, whoring stinks, especially when it's scatter gun directly by a CL.
As Aurora hints, at LEAST send them a mail first. Not that I personally believe a CL should be approaching civilians anyway, but to blindly invite civilians is dire. |

The reason why member whoring is such an unacceptable practice goes beyond the crewleader's desire to get to know a prospective member. There are plenty of good reasons why this practice has been frowned upon for many years. Before considering it to be archaic or unimportant, it would be wise to look into the reasons it has been frowned upon.
Besides the fact that it does not allow a crewleader or a recruiter to "get a feel" for a recruit, it also diminishes the central focus of the game - roleplaying and text-based activity. By lifting the burden of requiring a civilian to put forth effort, to actually write something, and to roleplay properly (in the sense that someone looking to join a mafia family must be hungry and seek out admission), you are taking away an essential aspect of the game. You are also denying a person the ability to take on a challenge. Any game should be challenging, or it isn't any fun. This is not to say that writing an invite request is challenging. Let's face it, it is not. A retarded monkey could do it. But on a relative basis, it is challenging for the "drooling mouth breather" demographic that we see around here all too frequently.
I would also argue that Jimmy's point is incorrect. Tossing out invites as if they were free humjobs from Camazotz's nan at the office Christmas party is actually detrimental to player retention. In situations like have been presented here, it is usually a CL trying to boost his membership numbers. So...the CL takes in a large number of noobs without ever speaking to any of them (as it is usually only noobs who will accept an unsolicited invite). This results in an instantly full HQ, and it is full of people who do not know what they are doing. This presents too much of a burden on the crew, with the "mentor to noob ratio" being overwhelming. What happens is the noobs have no guidance, they lose interest, and the next thing you know the member-whoring CL has a crew full of IA gangsters.
It is also a practice that pisses off other families who would like to increase their own membership, but who feel ethically obligated to do things the traditional way. They either have to watch other families expand while they stay the same, or they have to lower their own standards. I think we can all agree that we should not pursue a policy that promotes the lowering of the bar any further than it already has been.
These are not theories of mine. They are historical facts. IT IS WHAT HAPPENS as a result of member whoring, as we have seen occur throughout the years. There really is not any reason for this practice, either. There is more information available to new civilians than there ever has been, and if they don't catch on the first time, maybe they will catch on the second time. This isn't supposed to be nice, it isn't supposed to be easy, and it is in their best interests to learn right away that their are consequences for not doing the right thing. |
