St George's day is one of the best day to sit out in the sunny and celebrate the greatest of the english.
St Patrick was believed to have been born in england so the birthplace of a saint is immaterial. |

I am aware that the birthplace of a saint with regards to the place he is patron of is immaterial. This does not change the fact that you have songs that suggest there was a Turkish man apparently more qualified at being English than yourselves. I am just amused by this.
I am also glad to see that the original poster is moving with the times though with regards to his insightful IRA commentary. It is those kind of sentiments that hold development back. |

I don't see how the adoption of a particular saint as a patron is meant to suggest that the saint embodies the culture and characteristics of the adopting country. I don't think the saints give a fuck about your politics.

Those were your words. Being a patron saint does not necessarily impute the characteristics of the country's citizens on that saint. The two things are in no way related. That seems to be a notion that you invented in your own mind.
Most diseases also have patron saints. Cancer, for example. By your logic, the patron saint of cancer victims is more qualified to treat the disease than a cancer specialist doctor. |

I suggested this based on the lyrics to a song provided by someone other than me in this thread. Rather than it be my own opinion, it was how I interpreted said lyrics. Perhaps the logic of the song should be brought into question. It would be a far better usage of your time. |

It's all good coming along with smarmy comments and taking the high ground etc. but I take it you do not socialise much, the lyrics to that song have been sung at countless England football matches as well in pubs, clubs, bars and anywhere else.
Showing a bit of pride in the name of your country and patron saint is no crime, but by all means have a little whinge and bring your comments to the table, I'll enjoy laughing at you and will continue to sing that song amongst others that represent my country.

The IRA comments were totally unnecessary to be honest. Does national pride have to go hand in hand with hatred? I've been affected by the IRA more than most, but for me St. George's Day is a day of pride and celebration; not one to shit all over the Germans/French/Dutch/Nationalist Irish/Americans/anyone else who we've had conflict with in the past. |
