Crew Activity Level Started by: Ronin on Nov 14, '15 17:51

I think it would be cool to have an overall crew activity level on the crew page, much like the CL, RH, and LH are listed.

Maybe take the average hours in the past week of the entire crew, and boil it down to one average, and then see how in compares to the other crews etc. That way, when people are looking for a new crew, they would be able to tell which crews are active and such, and which ones are just full of inactives and shit.

Dunno, just thought it would be interesting and I should throw it out there.

I'm behind this 100% I'd love to see this implemented

Really good idea imo. Has its downsides of course. Such as when someone makes Godfather and gives the leftovers to someone, many of whom may be IAs. That family still needs to grow but could look to be a mostly IA family and put new people off.

(Although I raised that as a downside, I guess in ways its an upside as it could encourage people to get rid of the dead weight and recruit)

Report Post Tip
based upon Tony's point, perhaps a crew leader could only take godfather if their crew was above X activity level.

Totally up with this idea.

Sounds good!

+1 from me too.  I use the CL / RH / LH activity as a guideline when looking at which crew to join.  Would love to get an idea of the crew involvement as well.

As for the IA accounts in a crew, maybe show a basic stat line:

Crew Activity Over Past 7 Days: Very High

Active Crew Members Over The Past 7 Days: 23 of 30

For the newbies and people who are starting a character looking for a different family to join, this is a really good idea. I also agree with John in looking at the activity of the crew leader and the heads as a source of where I would like to join.

I'm totally behind this idea! And would like to see it presented in the format John has put forward!

Squishy could we get your thoughts?

I'm on board, I'm just waiting for you guys to work out exactly what you want, and address possible negatives.

Report Post Tip
I feel that it needs to be presented much like JohnWCreasy has show it. Show exactly how many have been active but maybe instead of 7 days, I'd prefer a interval of 3 or at the highest 5. That way we don't only see how active the family is but how many of them are active. And don't count those not active in last 3 or 5 days in crew activity. So we can see out of those active for active are they.
Report Post Tip

I can address some negatives! I do see some instances where it might be problematic:

  1. Highly active CL struggles to get/maintain active members. When you get authed late in a "cycle," there aren't a lot of really active players left and they usually build a crew out of mostly new players. This obviously isn't universally true nor is it bad, but if a crewleader recruits people well but can't get them to work as hard as he wants, he now has double the problems. In addition to having a pretty slow crew, he also has the stigma of an IA crew despite his best efforts.
  2. As a conjunction with the above point, I also worry this could lead to killing off low-activity members instead of IA ones. That, if you aren't putting in x amount of time, you're bringing down the crew and must be disposed of.
  3. I'm not confident that the majority of new players or even a substantial minority use the crew page to find a crew. It's usually rooted in jobs and recruiting. Plus, the crews list right now is rather daunting; for someone to try to go through each of them and get an opinion of them would be pretty intense. I'd be surprised if any new players even bother to compare crew pages. I mean, we have crews that still have "TBA" or something similar as their RP-intro that are now full HQs. If your HQ fills up when there literally isn't a single shred of public info about your crew, I feel its pretty obvious it's not getting used.
  4. CLs already have the capacity to describe their crew however they see fit in the RP Intro and Other Details, yet they're almost universally neglected. Seems odd to have Izzy code in a new feature like this when even your own crew, Ronin, has ":P" as the info you want recruits and other crews to know about your crew. If we want recruits to be curious/interested in working for our crews, perhaps leaders should start there instead of asking for Izzy to do the work.

Despite these concerns, I think it would be wise to use the crews list page more, or direct new players there before they go to the job board. And if we start doing that, I'd definitely be on board with giving them more information about the crew. What I don't want, however, is this to turn into yet another reason to shy away from any sort of public information about one's crew. I mean, for most new players it's a gamble since there is, in the Streets, in BDs, and in crew pages, next to zero information about why many crews are even remotely worth working for.

Please note that I am in favor of this idea, I'm just really good at being the devil's advocate.

Cato raises some good points.

Firstly, I think the best format would be something like John brought up. But it should match however the hands' activity is calculated. Not sure if that is 3, 5, or 7; but they should go off the same time period

So you have

CL: Bob
CL activity: High
RH: Tony
RH activity: Insanely high
LH: Tyler
LH activity: Average
Overall Crew activity: average
#of members active in past x days: 21 of 37

Now, on to Cato, ye bastard.

I can see the first scenario you brought up happening. Fuck, it's happened to me before. Maybe to counteract your first two points, have people that have been inactive for more than say, a fortnight, not effect the number? Or at least not effect it the same way as say, someone who is normally active, but takes a few days off.

As for three, I guess that depends on the player. Personally, when I start a new account, I normally have my next crew already worked out. Unless I am returning from "retirement." lol. In which case, I am much more likely to check out the crew page than I am to be doing jobs. I dislike doing them honestly. I've never enjoyed being bombarded by whore mails, and I disagree with the whole idea of CLs/hands "recruiting."

Now I understand why it's like that, and why Scott had to code it that way; you can't grow the game without new players, and new players won't stick around if they don't find a crew. I still tend to recruit if approached. I think Spike is the same way, and that may be why he has left the details page empty so long. That, and the majority of our crew is old Morningwood guys who don't play much at the moment, and the others are OOC pals. If this were to actually be implemented, we'd probably score pretty low :P

I think you take suggestions a tad too literal mate, as you had the same type of reaction on my last suggestion. I'm not "asking izzy" to recruit people for me, or to code something in to make it easier to recruit. I simply had an idea one night, and decided to post it and see how people felt about it. For people who do use the info on the crew page to judge a family's activity, this would be helpful. Rather than just basing it off the hands.

Report Post Tip

I understand you aren't asking Izzy to recruit for you, my comment is simply remarking that presently you're asking for more info on the crew page. Yet, you're deliberately not using space where you could put more info on the crew page. To me, that makes this suggestion seem either dishonest or apathetic. I know you aren't suggesting this as a liar or a lazy asshole, so I'm still in favor of the suggestion.

I don't want my concerns to nuke this idea, as I truly do want more eyes to be looking at the crew page. Because I believe that may actually end up with having more/better info on those crew pages.

Report Post Tip

I think the idea is great and the negatives are really just perceptive negatives. Some crew's that show crew leaders with low activity aren't seen that way, and this current activity level for upper structure sometimes is taken with a grain of salt. I think we should understand by adding this feature it wont mean a massive change to recruiting or how crews are seen. It will just by another 'statistic' some people may use, yet others may not use. I really don't see these negatives having an impact, or even relevant. I like the idea of devils advocate, but it seems a little forced just for the sake of it.

By the way, all anyone really has to do is click on any crew leaders crew  and all the information one needs is at your fingertips.  I cannot tell you how many times I took that route.

Report Post Tip

Any chance that this will be implemented in the near future?
