| ROUNDTABLE DISCUSS RHM gets crew if CL dies | Started by: Squishy on May 05, '10 15:42 |
|
We will be holding a roundtable discussion in #gametalk at 16:30 about the possibility of the RHM auto setting up a crew in the event of the CL dying.
I encourage all active members who wish to participate in the discussion on if this feature is ideal (good, bad, ugly, whatever) for the game, to be in #gametalk on IRC at 16:30
Thank you! |

Might I make a plea that next time there's a big round table discussion it be advertised further in advance? I'd quite liked to have been present and I'm sure I'm not alone in that. 45 minutes warning is surely not enough time to ensure that everyone who might like to gets a chance to give input on important topics like this.
Cheers. |

Agreed.
I'm curious what happens to the crew if said RHM is a Gangster or Goomba. |

Is there a reason a thread couldn't just be stuck up inviting discussion of the issue? |

Having been able to attend the discussion (which was still ongoing at the time of these posts) I'm happy to say it pretty much went in circles (mainly me and tita fighting tbh :P).
So I'd happily suggest that any thoughts on the matter could, or should, be tossed up here for further consideration and discussion.
The discussion raised lots of issues on both the pro's and con's of sucession of families. The main concern by those against it was that members sign up loyalty to a leader, not to whoever might happen to be rhm at the time of their death. A compromise was suggested where in the event of a cl's death the headquarters remains (with all associated auth permissions and a %age of the family boosts) for 24 hours after the death. During this time the member have the time required to organise their future while retaining the previous bonds of the family they have stood beside for the previous days/months/years. This will allow the members time to consider where their future lies and gives high ranking members the opportunity to seek auth if they believe that is an option (it also allows the members to continue to actively participate in any ongoing war if that happens to be the scenario). |

"not to whoever might happen to be rhm at the time of their death"
Just to clarify, the idea wasn't to automatically hand it over to the RHM, it was for the CL to designate someone(granted, common sense would assume it'd be the RHM...) but, it did not *have* to be. |

As far as I can make out this only seems to benefit the inactive players. Lets face it, the current protection for unsponsoreds after a CLs death works quite well. The active members within a family are given a period of time to re-join a family. The only ones this may trouble is the inactive, those who for whatever reason do not log in within the protection period.
Should there be a particular member - say a Consig that has happened to be unavailable as they are holidaying, it is quite an easy thing to extend a city's protection for this member indefinitely.
I actually can't see the issue with the current system - gets rid of the dead wood, no harm in that. |

Tayto Ive been gone for over a year, but i havent heard of a feature like that being coded in. If your refering to not shooting the unsponsored member policy, thats a kinda loose policy. But regardless this is more to keep Family continuality and add realism. I all for this idea, and have a suggestion for it. Would it be possible to make it so that the Cl sets a line of succession and even after the CL's death that succession continue unless changed by the new CL. Ex. CL A dies and RHM becomes CL B but is killed. Yet CL A set it so that LHM succeads in the event of the RHM's death and so becomes CL C. This would allow a Family to focus on fighting a war and waiting til afterwards to get fully organized again. Also with the new change in dropping from the Family if your not happy with who the new Cl is you can very easily leave and go somewhere else, if anyone will take you. |

OOOHHH!!! Finally THE topic that interests me!:)) Sorry i could'nt make it to the discution. Well, a lot has been discussed i see. For starters yes this is a game. And yes people dont like to be forced into something they dont like in a game. But it is mafia... and you know, in real life mafia members often were surprised by who became leader of GF after one dies. Some things in mafia are unpredictable. As of who will be the next leader for instance. Therefore i personaly think that you have to cope with the RHM newly leading after his CL died, or LHM if the RHM died along with him. I know... most people dont like at least one of the hand men. Why? Because one of them has to do the dirty jobs of the family, and this causes a lot of hate. But if he does become CL he gaines responsabilities. The responsabilitie to keep the crew alive for one... and he needs to have some followers. So... i believe this change could actualy make the hand men more... human and understanding. Or else he could never be a good leader. This change has a major impact on different aspects of the game. Wars would surely turn out differently... and would last more than 15 or 30 minutes as we have witenessed a few times.
I like the voting idea... but the voting should occur during the 24 hours of a new members arrival in the crew... after that, the member in question cannot vote any longer. The CL would nominate a RHM and LHM... those would be his first and second choice and people will have 24 hours to vote after they accepted the invite in the family. If the CL wants to benefit of this, he has to keep his RHM and LHM in their positions the whole time. If he changes them... his second change benefit is over. In this example, if he dies in the war the family members are on their own. If he respects the condition of RHM and LHM beeing the same as he first chose... than, he has his plan B. Now... if the RHM or LHM dies before he does... than he loses his plan B also.
I think that sums up my thoughs about this. I am quite happy to see the admins talking about this. I know many has already mentioned it before, as i have. It is always good to see that people care about what the players think!:) Thanks, Izzy!:)) |

Oh and if the person does'nt vote than it becomes the discretion of the Leader. So one has to vote in order to make his opinion matter. I dont know anything about coding... i am just giving my ideas!:) |

After having read most of that, I definitely support the CL nominating two successors in the time of his death (not so much the voting). I also support the option to leave for those who might not like being stuck with the nominated successor. The reason why I believe this adds to the realism of it all is because, as Sneakyrat_ mentioned, this would make wars more realistic and "ambushes" a lot less effective since our current system doesn't allow anyone to fight back once the CL is killed.
I disagree with the voting thing because, as mentioned in the IRC conversation, realistically, what kind of mafia family "votes" after their leader dies? Someone takes over and that's that. Not to mention, during the middle of a war, the last thing people will have time to do is vote--they need immediate leadership. |

Ok, I have a few points to make here. First off I am all for the CL appointing a successor. Personally I feel 9 times out of 10 it should be the RH and or LH. I mean if not, what the hell are they doing in the position in the first place. As far as the voting, no I am not a fan of that at all. The family don't get a say in who a GF or a Boss authorizes to set up so it shouldn't be up to them now. If it's not up to the particular CL then it should be a decision of the city heads. It's not a democracy it's the mafia!!
Now concerning the "I don't want to be in this crew anymore cause so and so took over". I think that's tough shit. When you talk about your loyalty, yada, yada, your loyalty is to your family and your brothers and sisters. You shouldn't just be able to say, "oh well my Don is dead, fuck it, I am moving cities." You either continue your fight or you stay with your fellow family members. I don't think you should be able to just easily walk away because you don't like your crew leaders successor. It's a slippery slope if we start letting people just decide they don't like someone or something about their families and can just leave.
Other then that, I love the idea of the family not just disbanding instantly. I am all for the defense either being lowered a bit or staying the same after a CL is dead. |

I would just like to echo. I do not get into a family for the RH so if the RH is automatically going to get a HQ I probably would stop playing as I am not always a huge fan of RHs. It's a nice idea to have someone take over the family if the CL should ever die but I don't think people should be stuck there. I mean if they stay in the same city that should be enough. Not forced to be in whoever the CL choose for taking up headquarters.
If the city is run as a whole and not separately (as most are) then it shouldnt matter if you join whoever the CL took or another family within the same city. But I for one would like to have a choice not be sucked into some crew Im going to hate. |

I undestand the issues about people not liking RHM... but if a RHM knows that one day he may take over the family after a CL's death, things may be different. We cannot really compare today's game with the next if the admins decide to go forward with this. The whole aspect of the game changes. The RHM cannot have people againts him, it is never good for a crew to have inactive people. He would probably end up quiting anyhow. Now i understand peoples concerns about this and i respect them. A voting process would probably help... for instance... when a member joins a family he should have a message somewhere on his screen saying... Mr.B is the RHM(1rst choice), and MR.C the LHM(2nd choice)... do you agree that they take over the city in the event of the CL's death? yes/no/uncertain.
Lets say so far 75% of the crew said yes... and you said that you were uncertain. Than it stays at 75%. If it is yes than it goes up in pourcentage considering the number of crew members. Maybe the admins could set the pourcentage at 80%, anything under than means that if the CL dies, no one takes over.
You see, that way.... the members have a certain control with the hand men. They have their say of what happens if their leader dies. Also the new members have 24 hrs to vote. Beyond that it is over, no more voting for them. The pourcentage would move either up or down evertime a new member arrives. That way, the RHM and LHM have to behave loll.
I dont know about coding and if this can easily be done though. It is just an idea!:) |

I'm not a major fan of any of this to be honest. In fact I pretty much agree with just about everything tita said. The 'invisible HQ' seems kind of weird and unnecessary.
What's the big deal if a few seasoned players get shot after their CL wackbacks? Is this really a major problem that needs a hard coded solution? Hell I think things are great when some old blood falls and players are forced to start fresh. Yea from an RP perspective it's devastating when friends and family die, but things get way too stagnant if we find ourselves hard coding out these 'accidents' of the game. Why not just hard code out wackbacks to protect the hard working accounts while we're at it? Well, because wackbacks keep things moving.
I was reading some comments on some of the voting sites and there is absolutely an outside perception that it can get extremely dynastic around here. By this I mean that families and small groups of friends are sticking together for extremely long lifespans and then authing one another's children etc, etc, ad nauseum. I really don't know how true all of this is, but it seems to be the main knock on MR from an outsider's view. In the last major war that I was in, my CL died and one of our members set up a rogue squad of survivors that the loyal joined to pop off a few shots before we were all obliterated. We had no special protection (other than that which we were afforded from our ballsy rogue CL who decided to handle matters in game and set up an HQ for protection). In the end, probably near half of the userbase died and started anew. We on the losing side were forced to join the families of the people who had just killed us. This was great! Honestly, it introduced me to the 'other side' of social network. I've moved on to something new and exciting.
I keep reading above that an invisible HQ offers benefits from an RP standpoint. How? Why would you not be weaker without a leader? In wars snipers are trained in target priority to shoot officers first (this is obvious). When your CL dies, your life should be in limbo. You should be in a frantic state of chaos, good for you. If you're offline during a war, good luck. If you're offline after a CL wackback, well we usually come up with in game protection that covers the vast majority of the fallen crew. So a few die, big fuckin deal. Dying is one of the best things that happens around here (from a gameplay standpoint). Why is MR great? Because we don't have hospitals. We don't get injured. We start the fuck over after wars, accidents, stupid posts, etc... And when we do, we should join a new family and get to know new people.
Now all this being said, I can live with the idea, and it probably wouldn't have any extreme impact on me whatsoever. I just honestly don't see how it really solves any major problems or fixes anything that we don't already have covered in game. You don't have to convince me though. I'll keep rolling no matter the set up. |
