Game of Cups Started by: JohnConstantine on Feb 06, '17 21:00

The streets. Where the bold and brave beat the feet and drummed their voices. In this neck of the streets though, you'd find something different.

This part was where you passed if you were looking for a bit of action. The various individuals scattered along this block, spread out haphazardly, were hard at work putting across their scam, or in their words a game of chance.

"Lucky, sir. That's what you look. Step over here and see if you can follow this rook." the lively poverty stricken lad shouted in your direction.

"The ball is the key, keep your eye on it see. And if you can place where it be, I'll double your fee!" he said with a cheery grin as he moved three plastic cups around.

If his smile and energy were anything to go by, you wouldn't think he was poor, but then again you remember some things might be more valuable than the material world.

And with that thought firmly in mind, you decided a bit of fun was to be had, regardless if you won or lost. But if you did win, a bit more in the pocket before you ventured on couldn't hurt either.

As you approached the kid kneeling behind a makeshift table, boxes stacked two high under an open and flatly laid comic book, you felt his energy radiate more as you chose to indulge him in a bit of fun.

He really was a happy little runt, you thought, as your competitive nature suddenly kicked in.

With your decision firmly made now to try your luck at this game, you dig around for some notes then drop them on the table, making your bet and awaiting the lad to respond and kick off the next game.

Merci stops and grins at the kid. She didn't like kids on principle, but he was reading that Ninja comic she'd picked up a time or two, so he was good in her books.

"I like your taste in literature," she says, tucking her hair behind her ears and digging three five-dollar bills out of her jeans. Laying them on the box, she asks, "Too rich for your blood, Little Man? Let's see what you can do," she adds with a smile.

The half blind lad gave his perky smirk. He could make out the figure of a women, and the voice confirmed it. He lifted a cup to show a white ball, then placed it back down.

"Watch the ball miss, and see where it twists, if you can catch where it ends my blood may not be so rich." He rhymed off as he began shuffling the cups, all the while looking up at Merci, smiling broadly.

After ten seconds of sliding the cups about, he stopped and lined them up side by side and silently awaited Merci to pick either one of the three cups. Left, middle or right.

Report Post Tip

There weren't many things in life that Merci was good at. One of them should never touch this child's ears. The other was her sight. There was a reason she was a professional sniper for hire, after all. She tracked every movement of his hand, and every sleight of it, as well. He was good, this one.

"Middle cup, kid," she said, smiling.

Report Post Tip

A lift of the middle cup proceeded, and revealed squat. Which was what she was walking away with. Well, not nothing. She got to partake in a little fun, even if the young lad sleight of handed the ball out of the middle cup.

She was good, but not as good as a half blind, poor kid who used his sense of touch more than most used their five senses combined. Maybe God gave him a gift, even though he was seen as socially unfortunate in other areas.

"Not today miss." he said with glee in his voice.

"Maybe tomorrow."

As the Don of Summerlin, it wasn't often that LuciusSweet interacted with street vendors, let alone street urchins, but today was the first time he had left his compound in weeks and he was intrigued as to why one of his city's Capo's was entertaining him.

As he watched, the young scamp twirled the cups in a rapid blur, quickly catching out his old eyes. He snorted to himself, but Merci didn't seem nearly as baffled as he was.

"Middle cup, kid" he heard her confidently say and with a quick gesture to his entourage, he motioned for them to part and let him get closer to watch her win. "I got this, I wanna see what happens" the Don muttered with a wave of his hand, crowding the cups.

"Not today, Miss" The lad said, ill disguising his glee in victory and Lucius couldn't help but laugh at the look of confusion on her face.

"You've got fast hands, boy" he said taking a few notes from his clip and laying them on the box "how about you show me that wasn't just a fluke, eh?"

The previous winnings, or losings if you were one of the two, were moved to the side. The kid shuffled on the rolled up jumper he had beneath his knees, smirking away as he caught a new figure in his shadowy view.

He nodded at the request from the newcomer, then flipped up the middle cup again quickly and if you were paying attention you'd see the ball back in there before it was snapped down and quickly rearranged.

"For a little fun, let's just do a quick one."

The left cup was lifted, showing the ball, then they were moved in a speed one could kind of keep up with if paying proper attention.

"It's not all bout the cash, so which cup has the stash?" He prompted whilst lining up the cups.

After a correct guess of the left cup by Lucius, and a clear show of it to all witnessing, the smiley little whipper snapper let it be known, with his happy little tone, it was now time for the money game.

"Once I get got you probably think you're a shot, now let's play this one hot and tell me where the ball stops."

His hands then went to work, swapping the middle and left cups, then the middle and right cups, then the left and right cups, then reversed the sequence, always looking up at the player before him.

After lining the them up again side by side, the still gleaming kid awaited LuciusSweet to make his selection. Left, right or middle.

Report Post Tip

Lucius ignored the kid's yammering and watched his hands...middle, left, middle, right, left, right...right, right, left..no... "Shit!" the Don cooed losing track.

As the lad lined the cups up side by side, Lucius realised he didn't have a clue where the ball was. Very aware of the shit-eating grin adorning the faces of his bodyguards Lucius hoped he could balls it out and get lucky. He had a 1 in 3 chance anyway, right?

"Left. Always left. Never fails" he said, sounding more confident than he actually was.

Report Post Tip

The cup was lifted to reveal no ball, and with a quick swipe there was also no more money left on the comic book either. All that was left was the kid's willingness to keep his spirits high, and his grin wide.

"No fluke today mister." said the young buck, happy to be tested and tested and still in luck.

"Maybe, tomorrow."

Noticing some of the best and the brightest from Vegas gathered around a table, TsuDhoNimh decided he needed to check this out. There could be a good story here and everyone knew that The Potato was badly in need of good stories. As he got closer, he also noticed @LuciousSweet "like chocolate" was there too. Watching the Grin be removed Lucious' face was enough to convince him, this guy deserved a few extra bucks.

Tsu strolled up to the table, which was quite impressive in its own right given how intoxicated the man was. He calmly placed three dollar bills down flat and smiled, waiting to gain the man's attention. This man seemed to like playing with his balls, so Tsu knew this could potentially take a while. He thought it would be worth it. Sure, this man was good... but can good really beat lucky? Time would tell.

Another shuffle on his lucky tattered jumper beneath his knees, the kid gained his comfort level again before sensing and kind of seeing a new form before him.

It was good the newcomer to the Game of Cups didn't say anything, because the youngen's hearing was mostly shot too. None the less, he knew it was time to go again by the money being placed on the makeshift table, his elbows firmly on the edge senseing it.

"Watch the rook.." the genial voice said as he showed the ball, then placed the middle cup over it. "..and try not get shook, when it stops you point and we'll all take a look."

The scruffy looking lad's gentle yet bright smile matched his voice as he began shifting the cups. He kept a steady pace, slow enough to actually follow as he swapped the left and right, then the middle and left, the middle and right and lastly reversing the moves.

He lined the cups up side by side then awaited TsuDhoNimh to choose which one he believed the small white ball to be under.

Report Post Tip

As his eyes settled on the moving cups, things started to move. Not just the cups mind, the whole world was moving. Fast. Glancing up towards the people he could see them hurtling all around him. He knew this wasn't really possible, but he had been drinking some of the cheap imported poitín, so it wasn't exactly surprising either. As he felt a fit of the reversals coming on he leaned forward to steady his balance. People were starting to stare, so he quickly turned it into a stylish move pretending to just be watching the cups with even more intent. Those damn cups wouldn't stop moving though. Was this kid trying to make him hurl?

As the cups finally did come to a halt, TsuDhoNimh remembered he was meant to have been watching something. He had no bloody idea where that ball had gone. Holding out his finger, he pointed in the general direction of the three cups. He wasn't sure which one he was pointing at, the spinning had started again, but he figured it'd be close enough to one for everyone else to know what he was at. Rubbing the sweat now gathering on his brow, he started wondering how long his toes would be able to keep him firmly planted to the ground and now flying away into the oblivion. That poitín was damn good stuff alright.

The kid's smile was constant, regardless, yet his energy shined a little brighter realizing the man was a little out of it. His excessive movements and pointing slightly between two cups may have tipped him off.

As the shadowy arm and finger was still outstretched, the middle cup was lifted to reveal an empty space. Even if the correct cup was chosen, the ball was somewhere else entirely, so it was handy the third to play today didn't seem entirely on his A game.

"Better luck next time. Even if you take chance by the hand she will still lead the dance."

The right cup was slightly lifted and with a quick sleight of hand the ball placed down, then it was fully revealed to be where the ball supposedly was.

"Maybe tomorrow." he added, hopefully enticing the man to return at some point in the future. His out of work family depended on it, and with that the cup shuffler swiped up the money and tucked it into a jar next to him.

Kathryn had noticed the crowd and watched multiple people steadily losing money. When there was a lull in the action, she stepped up and pulled a $10 bill from her purse. She smiled at the youngster.

"Alright. I'll try my luck, even if I suspect that I'm just making a donation."

Report Post Tip

The youngster may have been mostly blind, deaf and poor to the extent he was the families only source of income, but he wasn't dumb. His senses were sharp and his little operation was one where he was the scam artist, not the other way around.

After noticing a shadowy figure pretend to place a bet, the cup shuffler gave a hearty laugh from his place behind the action station. He wasn't going to be fooled today. Not in this way, anyways.

"Call me blind or deaf but I saw that jest, please try again and place your bet." The lad said with a bright smile aimed at Kathryn after finishing his soulful outburst.

Report Post Tip

Noticing the non dissapearance of the money this time, happy chappy shows the ball under the right cup then snaps it down, slides it to swap with the left, then swaps the left and middle.

To show this game is supposedly legit, smiley then reveals the ball is under the middle cup, for all those watching and witnessing the cup shuffler.

"Now we play the game of cups, there's nothing to it just call my bluff, and point the ball out it's simple stuff." he said with a faster than usual shuffle.

You'd be hard pressed to know exactly what cups changes with what, as even the kid lost track himself. They slid and moves as his hands go into a nice rhythm, nice groove.

After a good ten seconds he stopped, lined them up then awaited Kathryn to make her choice. Left, middle or right.

Report Post Tip

Kathryn, unsurprisingly, had lost the ball quickly. Kid had skills. With a smirk prepared to face her assumed loss, she pointed to the right cup.

Report Post Tip

Also unsuprisingly, the cup showed a whole lot of space as it was lifted. And with a quick swipe of the hand the money was removed, creating space on the comic for the next to try their luck.

"Sorry, you might do better tomorrow." the lad said with a delightful grin as he tucked away the ladies notes.

This was getting ridiculous. No-one? The kid was good, sure. His shitty life meant he had skills elsewhere. Gifts born of shitty circumstances. And a non reactive energy to lifes good, bad, and ugly.

But still, he wasn't supernatural. He was simply a poor, half deaf, half blind, poor kid working as he only knew how. Through the magic of fun.

Walking down the streets there was a young man gathering so much people around him that it spotted Harry's interest...

As he got closer, it seemed like another scammer trying to get money out of innocent gangsters.

Harry had found a ten dollar bill a block away and it seemed like it was his day of luck so he approached the young man...

Hello sir, let's play this game of yours, maybe you can fool me as everyone else, maybe not. - he said and put the bill on the table smiling

Report Post Tip

Smiles. It spoke a language of its own, and that energy was felt by the impoverished lad even if all he could see was a blur. And in turn, his heart opened and sent some good vibes back.

The cups were shuffled a little then all three were lifted showing the ball was under the middle and would be where it started. Then, the show began.

As the cups were placed back down the kid went to work, sweetly rhyming his way through.

"They move they shake, is it by chance or fate? If your heart isn't fake maybe some money you'll make."

The cups slid on the surface of the comic that had a picture of two ninjas on it. The left and right swap. Then again. Then the middle and left. And the right and middle. And then the right and left swap twice.

The young lad beams a warmth toward HarryPotter and awaits his choice. Left, right or middle.
