| Is Your Spouse Your Best Friend? | Started by: LuckyLucy on Sep 11, '17 14:46 |
|
Mine recently joined me here on MR *waves to the hubby* and this morning while taking our kiddo to school, I heard on the radio that there is a book that recently was published saying that for a happy marriage your spouse SHOULDN'T be your best friend. I can't imagine from what point of view the author is coming so I thought it might make for an interesting discussion here on the boards. Is your spouse your best friend? Yes or No. AND, do you think one's best friend should be their spouse - why or why not? Personally I can say yes. I honestly can't say I have a better friend in the world than my hubby and I think that's why we work as a couple. I anticipate, when my kiddo is older, instructing her to consider that relationships need to be built on more than physical attraction and being friends with someone before dating isn't a bad idea. What's your thoughts? |

Not my spouse, but might as well be lol. My girlfriend and I have been together for almost 9 years. She gets on my nerves sometimes, but I can say she's my best friend. She balances me, lifts me when I'm down. So I guess it depends on the people and their personalities to determine if best friends would work in a relationship/marriage. |

I tried making a go of it with my best friend, ages ago. We were inseparable but it didn't last; he was too much like a brother to me. Fortunately, the friendship survived afterwards. |

Not planning to get married for a long time but I do think it's important if you do decide to be married. |

I think it's important for your spouse to be your best friend but I do not believe your best friend should be your spouse. Seemingly contradicting statements, but I mean it in that a best friend should not be expected to become your spouse, obviously, however your spouse should be expected to be your best friend.
That's kinda confusing... lol Of course, I'm not married. However, all successful relationships, by my own standards of course, I've seen--both individuals would consider the other to be their best friend. |

I tend to agree with some of what Dub said. In my particular case my wife is my best friend, my other best friend and I just have extremely busy lives so we barely see each other or talk on the phone, we'll text maybe once a week but it's not the same. When we see each other it's like we were never apart, back to being brothers. Even though my wife is my best friend I think I understand where the author is coming from. You should have "other" friends outside of your spouse. My wife and I are practically together almost 24/7 (outside of our working hours) but every now and then one of us may have to go out of town for our job and I do miss her but at the same time I welcome that bit of space for me time. I think the author is kind of speaking on those terms. If your wife/husband is your best friend you're literally going to be with them ALL the time and that isn't necessarily always a good thing. By having a best friend and doing things with said best friend you differentiate between spouse and best friend.
I don't know if any of this makes sense to you readers or even me, its 1:30AM and I am rambling like a mofo...... |

for me the big question is; if Kiddo is big enough to be going to school, why doesn't s/he have an MR account? |

| i don't think your spouse needs to be your best friend. They need t be an extremely close friend yes. I'm sure it helps. I have things I talk about with other friends and don't bother my spouse with. But I can talk to her about anything. | |
