Issue #7 Out of Character Crew News & Announcements from Tower v2.0 - Vegas Edition BABY! 3/29/18

So, a little disclaimer as I go into my open letter: I have not spoken to anyone involved in the events I’m about to talk about and I can’t speak to why they made the choices they did. Anything said here is my speculations and observations and it’s strictly meant to give you food for thought and not a judgement or condemnation of actions taken (or not taken) by those involved.
That being said, let’s talk about Seattle.
When things like this happen it’s a great chance to learn about how the game is played and I mean more than the clicking. Here we had someone leave the game (or at least suicide their character) and on the way out … for whatever reasons… shot another character.
TAKE AWAY #1: Shooting on your way out leaves one hell of a mess for your CL and if you like your crew or your former CL… consider leaving without firing at someone to save them a lot of headache.
Sure, you won’t be around to see it if you’re leaving MR forever, but if you like your CL … maybe it’s not the best move? The CL almost always is expected to pay some manner of restitution for the dead character.
Sometimes that amount isn’t large (if you kill someone who is low level with few BGs) but if you kill someone with a lot of BGs and who had a lot of cash on them (or who is friends with someone who has a big gun in the game) OR maybe your CL has enemies who were just looking for a reason to gun them down… well, all that can mean BIG trouble for your CL.
Point is, the victim and his/her friends will determine how deep the debt is – and the people left behind after you take your shot and exit, they are stuck holding the bill.
TAKE AWAY #2: Damned if you do or don’t when it comes to demanding compensation.
Folks always have an opinion on whether the amount of compensation demanded is too high or too little. No matter what number you come up with as the avenging leader (ie: the one demanding compensation on the part of the dead party) – you’re going to have someone pissed at you.
Whether it’s friends of the victim who think you didn’t you valued their time, rp story, or bg investment high enough… or friends of the CL who didn’t take the shot, but still has to pay this massive bill they likely don’t have the cash or credits for; expect hate. No one loves a leader sticking it to an innocent person, and no one loves a leader who allows their people’s deaths to go unavenged.
There just isn’t a real happy medium here. Someone ALWAYS feels offended and as a leader in the game, you get to take it up the backside no matter what you do.
TAKE AWAY #3: Suicide CAN save lives.
Freelancer suicided. The whys of that are his, as I stated in my opening; but I can say I’ve seen leaders in the past who looked to prevent a potential war first and foremost. Choosing, instead of leading their crew into a war they couldn’t win, to fall on their own sword hoping to appease the masses with their own death.
This tactic can be effective. Many times, folks see the tragic loss of a leader, who was willing to die for the error of one of his members, as being such a big loss to the game and the players – that there just isn’t a point in looking for compensation. Or maybe, after the suicide, there is no one left to reasonably make a demand of (in which case a crew lost its leader and a player lost their character with no compensation… and no one won the day really.)
Regardless, a CL eating their own gun often ends any chance for war and so is a tactic some choose.
TAKE AWAY #4: Suicide CAN fuck your people over.
Because suicide of a CL leaves the crew without a leader, many times its immediately open season on the crew’s members. If there are hurt feelings even a protection order might not stop some folks from taking a pot-shot while they can get away with it.
Suiciding of a CL can leave a crew scrambling to find new homes because they fear death… and as such they might end up in a crew they otherwise wouldn’t have chosen because they were literally running for their lives and jumped into the first home that would take them in.
Players who had come to think of each other as family, are often thrown on opposite sides of the country and sometimes into crews that are at odds with each other… leaving former family members now enemies.
Players losing their crew this way, tend to feel salty/bitter about it. They blame all manner of people from the players demanding compensation, to the cl themselves, to the person who took the pot shot that started the whole damn thing. This bitterness can evolve into a player going from being a great member of the community to someone destructive and have lasting effects on the game over all.
FINAL THOUGHT: Being a Leader is tougher than you think. Have empathy.
Whether you’re the CL of someone who died and you’re in the fucked up spot of needing to figure out the dollar/credit value of a life… or the person who has to either foot the bill or find a way to prevent/win war – being a leader is so much more than just clicking buttons and collecting taxes.
And while many folks don’t realize it, situations like these arise weekly if not daily in the game. Small dramas can quickly evolve into potential wars and while you’re running another OC wondering why it’s taking your GF or CL an hour to click “accept” you don’t know that their in three different chats trying to give you another day in the game as your current character.
While you’re wondering why your CL’s name sits in chat and never says anything – they’re on the phone or video chat … cleaning up some mess that one of the crew made that you don’t know about because your CL isn’t the sort of asshole who airs folk’s mistakes.
No matter what you think about the choices of the people involved with this past week’s events in Seattle… please no that everyone is human. They all do their best and being a leader isn’t easy no matter what spot you happen to be in.
Respect & empathy in this thing of ours goes a long way.
