Made Man References and our world today. Started by: AnthonyGreen on Jun 05, '08 16:37
Walks out to the streets and clears his throat before he speaks

Ladies and Mafioso, I would like to take the time to address the Referencing System today. I know some people love it, some hate it and some haven't reached Made Man yet so they could care less about it.

For one, it is a good idea on paper. Sure, let others suffer for the actions of one. But at what time does this not become the Crew Leaders problem? I personally feel that the only person that should be punished for going rogue is the rogue itself. Yes, they lost all of their trust for this time but why make others who work so hard to get where they are lose everything they have worked so hard for? It just doesn't seem fair.

I feel that everyone deserves one chance and once they blow it then it is time for references. If your bloodline has the tendency to get bored with their life and choose to buy out set up and take pot shots you should have references. But if your family line is free of any incidents you should be promoted at your leaders discretion.

I would like to hear from both sides on the issue, because this is a topic that hasn't really been addressed. I see both sides of the coin, why it's needed and why some hate it.

I for one am not the biggest fan of the system. Most of the people i am acquainted with don't give out references so it was a task and a half to get my first three. It seems as some people who were Made before the rule was passed didn't have to have them but some were forced to find them. As time passed, my leader, Deviant, passed away and i was left homeless when i was taken in by Numbers. Once i join up I find out that i need to have yet another reference.

I find out why and it is said you need to have one living reference. So once again i had to find another reference when i thought i had earned the trust of others.

So now i ask you, why do you love the system? Why do you hate the system? and are there any ways to improve the existing system?

Thank You

The barrow loves the system the cheese created off the back of the knowledge of our lord Izzmund.
Report Post Tip
i understand that the borrow loves the cheese's idea but i don't know what the last part meant.
Report Post Tip
Well, I guess I shall address "Why do you love the system" as I tend to like it..

My reasons are 3 fold.

1) Since it's implemenation, rogues have been few and far between. Reasoning for this is simple, their lives are not the only one on the line should they go rogue. They now have to think of the consequences their actions hold on those that trusted them enough to be a reference, thus ensuring that people think twice before going rogue.

2) It has put more emphasis on how cherished the rank of Made Man should be and Is. For too long now this has been just another "button" for people to attach to themselves. To be given the rank of Made Man is an honour and should be treated as such. Having it so that people are willing to actually lay their own lives on the line for you to achieve that honour proves that you have managed to have some form of an impact on this life of crime and indeed gives you the right to wear that so called button with pride.

3) It pisses off all the CP haters to think it's there to simply prevent them from killing CP. Grow up, it's there to better our way of life. (And no, I'm not CP)

There you have it.

i agree with you. i'm neither a lover nor a hater but i just want to hear what people think about it.

Thank you for your input.
Report Post Tip
I never have and never will agree with it, innocent people dying because of other's decisions to go rogue? Soon it will come to the point where no-one will give references, hence no made men.
Report Post Tip
Getting to know your fellow Family members would help out a great deal for those who feel that this implementation to the guidelines aren't worth having around.

Granted there are a few that are nervous and may seem unwilling to give themselves up as a reference. That just means it's working. I highly doubt someone that you work alongside in your Family, who you have taken the time to contact and build a trust system with would deny you their help.

Expecting to wait to find someone that will Refer you once you receive the Wise guy status, just doesn't cut it, and it shouldn't. I know if I was contacted by a random Wise guy who I may have spoke with once when they asked for Drug prices, they would be turned down. I would jeopardize my life for their own wants.

Now I know to those Wise guys that once belonged to another Family and hope to jump right in too another Family and hope they promote you, well then you are wrong. I don't think a crew leader who has worked so hard to reach where they are, to just drag their Family name and what they represent through the mud over someone impatient enough to get to know him or the others within the Family.

It's simple really, Made man is a rank in which you now represent the Family you are in, it means that your actions reflect others. So why not get to know those your representing instead of thinking about No.1?

Just my opinion.
Report Post Tip
Yeah I don't agree with it, its sounds good in theory, but the fact the references die for that persons decision shouldn't be upheld. I mean as much as We are friends and allies does that one person care for the others accounts? i mean unless you get a real good feel for that person's personality you never know if they are going to be trustworthy enough to put your life on the line. Even if you do its the other person's choice that makes you lose yours.

its pretty flawed and even if you think you "know" your family members we only really know them to a certain degree.
Report Post Tip
It is good in theory, but what happens when you can't find anyone to reference you? You need to beg and plead with people to put their lives on the line for you so you can get promoted. I think the system needs some retooling to make it better.
Report Post Tip
it seems as most don't favor the way the system is set up now but they feel that it is indeed a good idea if it can be re-worked.
Report Post Tip
I never really gave my opinion on this system since it was established, but I really think that the CL should be the one to make the decision. The trust of the CL should be enough for one of their members to get Made. No one else outside of your family should have any say so on the CL of that member's decision.
Report Post Tip
The reference system should be scrapped, its like Cassidy said, the CL promotes the person in particular if he/she feels they are ready. If the CL trusts them then it his/her decision to promote that individual when he/she thinks they are ready.
Report Post Tip
I just don't think that some of you realise the good impact that the reference system has had.

Too many people here are bitching because it makes their own lives harder. Stop crying and work harder?

If you can't work hard, you don't deserve to be a Made (Wo)Man in my opinion. You have to earn the right to get there. Running around town robbing 7/11's and busting people from prison while selling drugs isn't enough to earn you the right to become a member of a Family.

Interacting with your family, getting to know people around you. Helping the family run it's businesses and lending a hand wherever possible. These things will give you the contacts you require to get references. Build a bond with people and they will put their trust in you and give you that reference.

At least if your going to criticize the system, offer an alternative. Just saying you don't like it really doesn't cut it. One day if/when you get high enough to run a family yourself you'll realize just why such things are required.

Anyway, guess thats my thoughts on the matter. Yet to see anyone actually put some effort into explaining why they dislike it, so far the complaints have meant nothing to me.
Report Post Tip
I didn't say its to much work, its just not needed, CL should have total control over who gets made.
Report Post Tip
I see where your going Cassidy,

But the CL does have total control. All they are doing is asking for people who can vouch that you are a Mafioso worth letting into the inner circle of trust that a CL has amongst his/hers top men.

In the Mafia, if a Family head comes to you and asks if that man is to be trusted, and you vouch for them. Then one day that Mafioso goes ape shit killing others, I don't think they would be too pleased with you after vouching for someone who just ruined possible Diplomatic issues that may already be at hand, or even break Alliances or cease fires.

Overall, I think the problem is the change. People don't adapt well to change, and that's what has happened. Instead of beating it to the ground, think of ways to work with it. Using, "People will soon stop referring, then no one would get made!!" as a possible damned situation. I think amongst the coffee shops and the pure fact that your bloodline has been around for a bit, somewhere someone will help you out. If not, then maybe there is a good reason your not made.
Report Post Tip
I like the made man refrence it makes us feel a little safer with rouges and isnt much to ask for to be promoted to made man for just 3 refs.
Report Post Tip
Just because a person has three references doesn't mean they are guaranteed a promotion to made. Its still up to the crew leader. If you are ready to be made it should be of no worry for you to find three people to refer you. I don't see this system as being of any issue.
Report Post Tip
Big up the Jerkovski. He speaks the truth.

I like the "if it can be reworked" as if it's a demographic choice.
Report Post Tip
We've said all along this is only one aspect of becoming a Made Man.

You're joining a family. Why on earth should you be given that honour if you can't even prove yourself to 3 members of what you're hoping to join?

I have held people back for weeks and even months if Eyzlee hasn't recommended them highly enough, which means that whilst it is a mandatory aspect of the promotion - it is not the sole one.
Report Post Tip
To some people getting references is a tough thing, even when they are active in there family and coffee shops. Some people just won't sign their name off on anyone and other who would, their CL's don't want them signing their name on someone because they are to valuable to the organization.
