Where are all the Mobsters? Started by: killer6 on Dec 10, '08 22:25
Heck,

If enough people wanted to make the change bad enough, enough GANGSTERS could take down even a godfather!

Muqtada kinda nailed that one. It's just as true as why don't I just pick up a gun, walk out the front door of my house and shoot some for fun. I could do it. I might even get away with it. More likely the police will come and get me and lock me away for 25 years, or, depending on the neighborhood, his friends might hang me upside down in a bathtub and slice me so they can watch me slowly bleed to death, laughing with amusement as I beg for my miserable life...

OK let's be frank, I prefer being Jim, but for today I'll try being frank - THIS IS A PERIOD RP GAME. Precious few of you take that very seriously. I've been back in this life for two days and I've seen cars from the future, weapons from the future and listened to drivel that people's own mama would slap them for.

If the bottom line here is realism - realistically during the time period of this game the St. Valentines Day Massacre grasped the attention of the nation because of the sheer magnitude of the slaughter. Never, at that time, or before or since, have people involved in this thing of ourse sanctioned people walking down the street and shooting people for fun. Such people are stark raving mad and need to be institutionalized or shot. They are a danger to us all. End of story.

Had any good rogues lately? Back in the day CLs used to pretend rogue were the bane of their existence while secretly enjoying the excitement (and ususally someone legit was behind it anyway - plausible denyability - hey, this game is a lot deeper than some of these people realize - take it seriously for a while and you might discover that!

What about the mobsters, won't somebody please, please, think of the mobsters...

Anybody remember MrEvilman? There was a guy who could and DID change things. Was he loved for it - by some of us - you had better believe it; but he was also vilified for it by many disgruntled players who kept on waking up dead...lol

Ah the good old days...

Jim, regarding your opinion on rogue mobsters, it is much harder and fairly impossible to have a good rogue these days compared to those after the 2003 V-Day Massacre. There were significant changes made in the progression of the game:

- Authorization required on targets over Earner was removed and the three rank difference put in place

- Could no longer buy HQs at Earner; Made Man was newest requirement.

- Less inactives to train on with much more competition

- Bodyguards introduced to add defense to your potential targets

- Protection lost once fired (which has resulted in wack-refreshing being much more successful on targets)

There used to be a glitch where you could grant someone authorization on a target and drop that member who still retains the authorization, but that is also no longer available.

Are these good changes? Bad changes? I just see them as an "evolution" of the game. It has, however, removed the advantages from the rogues and placed them in the hands of the general populace.

i am pretty much with rourkey, the game used to be easier to build a big offence even just of the old start up answers for superwhack or decent whack even when i was under BA, on org shooting MM's and capos as gangster with auth. The game just became too defence based for stability which makes a game last a bit longer but need a balance between the two.

Muqtada....you are an idiot...this is the mafia...mafia has more rules then the fucking government does. The only difference from the mafia and other thugs are the rules. Without rules how is it ORGANIZED crime....
Report Post Tip
What he's trying to say is that the entire concept of rules is notional, Sebastian.

For instance, you have a rule about guys with white pants? Fuck you, I don't like that rule. To me, that rule doesn't exist, what are you going to do about it?

There are a few constants, obviously, that of erta, loyalty and so on; but generally speaking, rules like the 48 hour rule, taking in unsponsoreds and so forth only exist as long as the person who enforces them is strong enough to do so.
Report Post Tip
Fuck you! Obey the laws of white pants or suffer!

Muqtada is far from an idiot. He is one of very few left here who understands the nature of the mafia, where we came from, and how we got to where we are. The mobsters have left and have been replaced by members of various social clubs.
Report Post Tip
Or in certain cases, they have been replaced by sea captains.

Shakes his head. The difference between the mafia and the other thugs most certainly is not rules. It's that the people in charge of the mafia are strong enough to force people to behave to their preferred norms. Members of the mob could go join other thugs in their little gangs where they have plenty of rules but no one obeys them, but choose the mafia instead because it's powerful enough to guarantee their protection. The difference isn't the rules. The difference is the permanent residing upper structure that forces obedience upon its members. It's not rules. It's power.

And what I hear in this thread is that Killer6 is unhappy with the current norms in society. Well, tough beans. Don't just sit here complaining about it! Do something about it! The structure here is not dead set like the mafia. Shoot some people, shake things up, tear it down and rebuild it if you don't like what you see!
Report Post Tip
In a real mob you shoot at a made member or otherwise wrong them theres a great chance you are going to die. They are unwritten rules. But rules nonetheless. The mob is filled with rules and that is what makes it organized. Common gangs of thugs can have power. Some lesser gangs can rule neighborhoods but this thing that separates them is the rules.

Thugs runs communities, mobs rule the country. The mob has a whole commission that regulates what the bosses can and cannot do. And its just like here. The people in charge give new people 48 hours to find a family. Sure one family in theory could go against the wishes, but that would bring the combined wrath of all the other families.

(Sorry for the whole idiot thing....god damn nicotine withdrawal got the better of me :<)

About a year ago, I pushed forward some ideas. They were realistic and would of been great for this place. When I took a dirt nap, the people that were left in charge dropped the ball, with excuses to justify their laziness and we were left with a poor substitution (the captain crews.)

What separates La Cosa Nostra from the thugs and street rats is it's unspoken rules, it's structure.

It really is an enterprise.

It's rules are rather intuitive, common sense, I think.

Mind your own business and keep your mouth shut.

To me, that's the same thing as respect.

Too often people will worry about the affairs of others, when it doesn't pertain to them.

Sure if you have interest in someone's business, it effects your own, it's good to be concerned.

My attitude has always been, smile at everyone. Be friends with everyone.

When you watch these gangster movies, you don't really see any open rivalries, right?

No, you don't. People do business, if someone falls out of line or threatens the greater whole, he disappears. No problem, no problem.

That pretty much covers respect and etiquette. Like I said, it should be common sense, how to behave, how to think and feel. Take a deep breath and relax, it might be your last, so enjoy it. ;)

As far as structure and recruitment goes.

Why are thugs being directly affiliated with crime families?

Why are gangsters or even goombas being directly affiliated with crime families?

Long ago, I proposed this system, where (Earner <) would be unofficially sponsored and vouched for by the (Earners and Wiseguy's of the family.) The Earners would promise protection in exchange for an envelope (tribute)

You see, you put a big price tag on our low ranking members. Realistically, what we consider, thugs, gangsters, goombas were getting clipped all the time. They werent made man, so they werent deemed untouchable. Now a days, a goomba get's clipped... the shit could hit the fan. Come on!

The whole point of being a made man is the status of untouchable. Unless you really fucked up and broke the other unwritten rules of our thing, you were set. It involved multiple sit downs and serious justification to touch a made man.

The unnecessary value we put on the lowly ranks, takes away from the whole experience here. It's something again to consider. This is just a glimpse of the iceberg which is Cosa Nostra.

Sal signing out.

After reading Sal's speech, Ares steps forward to say a few words.

I completely agree with you Sal. Especially with that idea of tribute. People are too laid back. Personally, I think that comes from a lack of greed. (Since this is OOC, I can say the following.) The Mafia was set up because people wanted more money. The Mafia was driven by money. The top had the most money, the bottom worked to get to the top, collecting money as they went. It was never about, "The good of the mafia" or "for more members". Now, I can understand that a family would want more members, (= more cash), but you don't need to do things for "the good of MR" anymore. If someone doesn't like it, they can grow up and change it, or just leave.

Now, I mentioned earlier about a lack of greed. Part of which, I believe, is caused by a lack of things to purchase. Training Ranges and Body Guards are all the things you can spend money on. So, why would you want money so bad if you've maxed your ranges and are EWP? You don't. Its just laying there, with nothing to do. So, you lose your want of money, and start to do things for "other reasons". The actions taken on those "other reasons", in turn, seem "un-mafia-like" to other people, BECAUSE, they are done for a motivation outside of greed and power.

Moral: Be greedy

Note to Admins, I would <33333 to see something that people can buy, which would make money worth more.

I've always agreed with that 100%. If we worry less about getting a bigger userbase and enticing members and just concentrate on playing the game, the rest will follow. I honestly believe that when a new member comes to play this role play game, they'll be more interested in seeing people RP a no holds barred, no shit taking mobster; rather than a toned down version of realism that is aimed to bring in new players and softly break them in.

I am going to take a very little thing to make a point.

As head assitant killer6 you have more power than most of us round here. A long time ago rules were introduced by players that became admin rules. Rules that affect the users of this game by no other means than stopping them playing the role of a mobster.

If a Crewleader today kills everyone and takes over could he get rid of the under 48 hour rule? Or would the admins be pissed off with that?

For me some rules have been made by users and taken over by admins. Let the players run the game and the admins run the T&C'S. Anything else is player run.

If 'you' insist that we must not kill those who are under 48 hours old then they will never learn that death is easy to come if you step out of line. They will sit back, do as they please and expect the world to give them a living.

Simply. Let the users run the game as it used to be run and you might actually find it goes back to how it was when you were playing.
Report Post Tip
I don't know how this turned into a 48 hour rule debate...

I was more talking about when a leader falls, people run and give them "protection." I am saying, they don't need protection. Their leader fell... No enemy should be protected. The reason you were taking them out was because they were bad for business... Why give an enemy a reason to hide his feelings and then bite you in the ass later?

This thread went completely off course with the 48 hour rule. There's a huge difference between just starting up and finding a crew, and when your crewleader dies...

And that's what I was talking about.

Leave the 48 hour rule out of this debate.
Report Post Tip
You accused us of not being "mobster" for protecting unsponsored. The 48 hour rule is protecting unsponsored.

I'd like to see an answer to the second part of Frijj's question.

Can we get rid of the 48 hour rule? or will the admins get pissed off about it?
Report Post Tip
Well, that's another discussion...

If you can convince me on why it should be gone... without saying, "read this thread." For example... Zoey, what would you do, if the 48 hour rule was gone? How would you roleplay it? How would you handle it? What would be the procedures? Would you recruit harder? Would you show more help?

I'm interested in hearing why you, Zoey, want it gone.

:)
Report Post Tip
Obviously you have asked Zoey but I am going to answer.

Why would they have to handle it any other way? It is not the leader problem if people do not mail them and look for protection. Back when you 'loved this game' those was no such rule and you did not mail under 48 hour Gangster offering them help just because you were bold. I know this for a fact as I used to run a little 'agency' for those new off the boat and I was the only one doing so at the time. veryone else left them to fend for themselves.

Why should we now run up to them, offer them money and advice that we earned the hard way just because they are new..?

You cannot say you hate the way we act now but then try to keep the things that are making people do the things you hate.
