An Open Letter to The Leaders - The 48H Rule. Started by: KingOfOnePercent on Jan 09, '09 17:01
Dear Leaders, Right Hand Men and City Hall Officials,

Same old tired shit? Not quite. Not so long ago, before Zoey's untimely demise (GRHS), there were some real fresh and innovative ideas regarding the 48 hour rule. It seems that, as Don Zoey was the main catalyst for these changes, as soon as she passed on all progress was lost. I find it very sad, and very galling, that we seem to moving backwards as a community in such a fashion

To fast foward to the present, and my reason for penning this letter; everyone knows that I disagree with the 48 hour rule on the basis that it does not conform to what we, as mobsters, are all about. However, even if everyone agreed with me, that would not be reason enough to change the rules; after all, the odd deviation from what La Cosa Nostra embodies is essential to entice the newer breed of criminals into our organisations.

As I've said before though, show me proof that the 48 hour rule does hold newer members here. It's widely accepted as a gospel that it does, but until I am shown proof it is no more than a fallacy.

A very simple way to provide proof that the 48 hour rule is beneficial to new members, or otherwise, is to repeal it for a trial period. For the figures of authority to decide on a timeframe in which the community operates with no such rule; and at the end of it we can make a truly balanced decision on what will be best for the community instead of working on assumptions.

Thoughts, input and discussion will be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

KingOfOnePercent

P.S. I would like to point out that these views are mine, not those of Don Acute or The Cuties. Ty.

upon reading the letter that was posted on his favorite street corner, he decides to take a moment to address all those listening. He points to a few gangsters running from convenience store to convenience store, and a few others going into casinos.

Hey, listen up. There's an interesting discussion going on here. I am in agreement with the letter. I'm not sure the 48 hour rule does much to help keep new gangsters on these streets. Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't. And then maybe my position is biased because I'm not new, or at least my family is not. But I like the idea. And just wanted to come and give my support.

I also remember a time when bums would be transported to the cities in droves. Ah, interesting times.

and he notes his disclaimer as well

These are only my views. I have now no intention, nor have I ever had an intention, to break Godly rules.

*A Strange looking man walks up to read this letter*

"I strongly disagree to what you are saying here KingOfOnePercent I was not so long ago A new mobster to theese streets and without this protection for 48 hours I would not be here As i was about 19 hours old I recieved a letter from an unkown individual asking me if I was new here and he suggested a few things to me ie, joining a crew"

"I did not join the same crew as this mafioso but I found a leader that is right for me, I strongly suggest that this is kept in place for the people joining us on the streets"

"After a week I soon found my feet and now feel I know as much here as the people before me"

*The man picks holds his head up high and walks to the pub*

"Well, you didn't needed those 48 hours then Sonic. I agree with KOOP, I don't think it help the ones who are new to this kind of life as there are always people who will observe them and will advice them as they obviously did with Sonic.

My father told me that also he got approached by many people who were offering their help, their money and their advice. To help the new ones should be our responisibilty and not a rule which protects them for a while, a rule which can be abused.

I say that we do not need this rule."

lights a cigarette and joins the discussion

As a young child, I remember over hearing stories about how rough it use to be on the streets. That the mafia was cold and showed no sympathy. And as i come into this world of ours, the streets seem to be padded and soft. As a mafioso, it disgusts me. We're all criminals, respectable criminals, but we seem to have softened up.

The 48 hour rule isn't bringing in any more members than it was when we didn't have it. 48 hours is way more than enough time to find a family. Were babying the new members. We need them to fear us, were the mafia. Without this fear, respect is either not there, or fake.

I mean no disrespect, but we are the mafia, not a day care.

Marietto walks in on the discussion and makes his opinion known.

How about a compromise? Instead of the Gods bestowing upon the young extra protection, why not bestow upon them restrictions. Specifically, until they join a family, they cannot commit crimes. If they cannot commit crimes then they are no threat to the city's organized crime, and if they are no threat to the city's organized crime, then there will be no real reason for one to seek to have them killed. This will allow them to legitimately retain the protection just in case 48 hours is needed.

And, as soon as they join a family, they are an 'official' criminal, and so the Gods allow for them to steal purses and deal in drugs, and the like. It's a win-win situation.

Mirage heard about an open letter posted on a street light post and walked towards it to read it. She pondered over it for a few seconds before turning towards KingOfOnePercent.

Thank you for the GRHS about my mother. It's an honor to hear her get such a hip phrase.

Mirage smiled and glanced at the letter again as she talked.

I guess I can offer the most insight to Zoey's thoughts about this topic because I heard her talk about it a lot. It's started as the mafia's belief that family is the most important thing in our business. I think we can all agree on that point at least. The 48 hour rule and the tradition of protecting unsponsored after the death of a leader totally goes against family being important because if someone who fits in one of those two categories gets shot at the shooter is killed. I've already heard the argument that they should be punished for breaking rules. I agree people should be punished for breaking rules, but the 48 rule contradicts the mafia's traditions and principals.

One afternoon Zoey was taking a walk down OOC street and heard a man yelling at leaders about not being mobster enough because they protect unsponsored mobsters after a war. When Zoey heard man was from a bloodline that works in City Hall she thought he had a lot of nerve to come out here criticizing people for protecting unsponsored when the 48 hour rule was suggested by City Hall. They debated a bit about the topic. One thing Zoey said was she had no power to change the way how people were doing things for years. In response to this she received a mob mail from the man's divine relative stating she did have the power to change things, but he was wrong. She didn't have the power to do anything. Although she was a Don she worked under the Godfather of Detroit. She did try to change the 48 hour rule by making an official suggestion to City Hall for them to protect people under forty eight hours old from being shot at. Shortly after making the suggestion Zoey died and the last time I checked her suggestion it was ignored by City Hall.

The 48 hour rule can be debated and argued about for hours with each side making good points, but I doubt it will be changed because it's a rule wanted by City Hall and I don't think any of the current leaders will take on City Hall. This thing of ours has become more about being liked and being popular instead of being mobsters who protect their family and business. We're suppose to be bad guys, in case anyone forgot. In my opinion if City Hall doesn't want the under 48 hour old people shot at they should protect them and let us be mobsters.

Marietto turns back to the crowd.

Hmm, I may have at first suggested that the Gods should take away the protection and replace the restriction. And that contradicts my final point. So please forget I suggested taking away the protection.
Report Post Tip
Mirage pointed to the unsponsored Gangster, Marietto.

Here's another problem with the rule. Someone who clearly knows he should be in a crew, but he's not.
Report Post Tip
Marietto turns to Mirage.

Why does this bother you? Like I stated, if the Gods take away my ability to commit crimes, then I am in no way a threat/a problem/a thorn in your side. I will be like the hundreds of clueless citizens going about their everyday business.
Report Post Tip
It bothers me because you are disrespecting this thing of ours by staying unsponsored. You aren't clueless. You know you should be in a crew. It also bothers me that you hit the streets asking for help for your business, but you don't have enough respect for us to be a part of our business and I'm also bothered by your parents blatant attempt at ass kissing by naming you the male version of Marietta.
Report Post Tip
How can I be disrespecting this thing of yours when I'm not a member? I'm not in the mafia. I'm a common criminal.
Report Post Tip
You are disrespecting us by taking advantage of the 48 hour rule. Most of the rule's supporters say it's to protect people who are new or people who arrive here then suddenly go in a 24 hour coma. You are neither.
Report Post Tip
I'm sorry, but I have no obligation to join a family. I'm just doing my own thing; living my own life. And if my life of crime is disrespecting you, and you want to kill me, then kill me. But my suggestion for the Gods is that people like me are restricted from committing crimes. And then this type of discussion on the 48-hour protection is irrelevant, as there will be no reason to kill these youths. They are not doing anything against the "mafia code".
Report Post Tip
Okay I may be shooting myself in the foot here. But nevertheless, I don't believe that the 48 hr benefits anyone, it is an old rule that I assume sprung about during a time when crew leaders were dropping like flies and those who were homeless cried out for protection, from there it evolved not only to encompass the recently homeless but those who were new to our shores to save them from what some call wack happy, others would call hitters in training.

In my eyes what it has achieved is to soften this community towards those who come to our shores, be they new or old hands. It is a rule that has evolved so much that instead of being enforced by the family heads it was set in stone by the officials at city hall.

Those like me, know the life that they chose, the very reason we come here is not to be wrapped up in cotton wool. But to try and survive on our skills and our wit. There is risk in every aspect of the life that we lead here, no one who comes here is innocent we come here for power, money, noteriety. These things aren't achieved by sitting behind a protective screen, they are achieved by living the life, no not living, loving the life accepting that with each action there is a risk and still going forward and trying to take as much as we can.
Report Post Tip
I agree with you, Marietto. I do want to kill you and everyone else who takes advantage of the rule.
Report Post Tip
And secondly, how is 'taking advantage of the rule'? What possible gain is there? There's more to gain from being in a family; there is a lesser chance of being killed when in a family; you can't go any further without being in a family. What is being abused? What benefit is there? In what way are others losing out?
Report Post Tip
My grandfather spoke of a time, before the 48 hour rule, when our shores were flooded with new immigrants. There were times when over a hundred people walked on our streets at one time; not everyday of course. This all happened without the 48 hour rule.
Report Post Tip
I agree to get rid of it. Makes no sense to be there unless they people really need it. Maybe remove the special tag that they get from the gods saying they are still protected (-48) if they pick pockets, or shoot, or even mail a certain amount of times or crime a certain amount of times. I feel that 24 hours is significant time for a thug or citizen to get in a family. Ive seen so many people die for killing this type of poeple and even sit there and watch the "tag" be gone and they still show innocent in their grave sites. Or Ive even seen them die not being innocent at their graves and then it changes to them being innocent.
Report Post Tip
Marietto you forget, while they are not within a family, They are earning money on that leaders turf and not paying any tribute. That is taking advantage of it.
