Under a couple families when my bloodlines first came back to these shores I was told to put the tag on but there was no effort to explain where it came from, what it meant or anything about it. It was simply a being told to do it for my own safety / family tag level of understanding.

 The way it was explained here just now by Jono is more then I actually knew about the topic until today. Its commonly bandied about and I dont have to do more then pull locals in a given city and see the tag somewhere. Now i'm not sure where exactly the power would lay to lay a classic tag like that to rest, but the values that were discussed SHOULD still be important today.

When I reached Made Woman under Starscream something interesting happened I hadn't seen before. He sat aside a time with myself, his RHM and LHM and we actually swore me in to the family, that I would uphold the family values and name and remember I represented them. This was never recorded in any of my ancestors journals as having happened. It gave me pause to think about what was important. If you just come to this world and 'put in your time' so to speak, what are you really doing? I hear words like 'honor, loyalty, and respect tossed around like old hats and yet when a war is coming and people know it, how many will jump ship and forget they took that vow to put the family first? I'd say theres a fairly decent split on the percentages there no one wants to die but a great many, those of quality at least take that pledge seriously. The thing is, how many 'families' actually sit down and take a moment to get their members to seriously think about putting the family first no matter what? Like I said, until Starscream, i hadn't seen it. "Loyalty" was just expected, if it happened good if it didn't that person might take some grief in the streets or what have you but it generally blew over.

Personally, I can say this while not always holding my tongue I have learned that family should come first. That there are difference between a 'crew' and a 'family' and words like honor, loyalty, OMERTA, and respect shouldn't just be tossed about like they are nothing. If the words are spoken, and not stood behind they are meaningless. Maybe its time to retire the classic symbols of loyalty and honor and begin a new tradition, sit a new standard. That will take time, patience, and leadership but in the end our entire world would be a better place for it.
