Best Bands have to be looked at in genre. Country, for example would be Alabama, George Strait, Garth, Merle, and of course Hank Sr.

Rock would be the Stones, Eagles, Beatles, Led Zepplin, and AC/DC. I also like Kid Rock, who's been around alot longer than most people think.

This new stuff on the market... nothing but rehashed and sped up old shit. I'll take my classic rock and country over anything out there in the last 10 years. Yeah, I'm older than most in here, but good music is just good music.

There are so many great bands out there. I think it depends on the Genre you are listening to. It also depends on the genre that the listener prefers. Great bands are great bands no matter what you listen to. In certain genres like country the greatest artists usually are solo but there are some great duos and bands as well. See Biskelerri's post above. I agree with him except their are alot of bands within the last twenty years that are great as well Bisk. Linkin park as listed in this thread may be considered great someday and by some now. I happen to love them but still would not put them in my top twenty if asked. There is also my favorite band, The Dave Matthews Band, which will be right up there with the best in history one day and it is from the 90's. I think there are too many great bands for this thread to handle. Bands from the past will always get rated higher right now because we can retrospectively look at their bodies of work. Who's to say, we may listen to the greatest band ever come out tomorrow and be talking about that band twenty years from now. I have to say though some people aren't into bands not from their generation. I personally love all kinds of music but I think the Beatles stink because that was not my generation. Does that mean they weren't a great band, NO. They were according to millions of fans. Good thought provoking post though SkullCandy.

By far the most popular band, but they have like 20 albums and they are bad ass.  The Melvins if anyone is familar with them.  They are the self-proclaimed "Heaviest Band of All Time" even though not all their songs are heavy.  Kurt Cobain was a roadie for them and publically said they were his favorite band (for whatever that's worth).

Yes, we all love their stuff more times than not... and we agree that you can't have too many bands witha  mix of screamers and actual vocalists on your iPod playlists... but WTF?  Have you even listened to music made before 1998?  If it wasn't for that whole span of time between the 60s and the late 80s... none of the music we listen to today would exist.  Your boys in Linkin Park would be washing cars at the Pink Elephant and flipping burgers, complete with hairnets at the local Dairy Freeze.

So yeah, next time you wanna say some little baby band is the greatest fucking band of all time... please remember to think about what you're putting out there in the world.  Cuz it's ugly.  Instead let us think back on The Beetles, The Who, Queen, Led Zeppelin, ZZ Top, Pink Floyd, CCR, Lynard Skynyrd, The Sex Pistols, Soundgarden, The Jimi Hendrix Experience and everyone else you owe your music loving experiences to... because really, these are the people who've made it possible for you to listen to your beloved Linkin Park.

Soundgarden for me is just a personal favourite because I'm a Seattle girl... I don't think they're gonna go down as the greatest band in history,... but those boys have sure paved the way between some old classics and new favourites.  So I had to give them props.  I could do a whole posting on just local stuff... but I fear what I'd say if anyone should rag on them.  I don't think I could be help responsible for my action.

lol, this thread should be titled Keyword "Your" Favourite Bands. Since thats what some people are choosing. But ya Linkin park wouldn't be the all time best. You can't really say whose number 1 but if your going by who sold the most the Beatles would take it.
