Country= Hank Williams Jr.

Folk= The Dubliners

Hip Hop= La Coka Nostra (under ground New York)

Metal (thrash)= Slayer

Mechanical metal/ Industrial= toss up between combichrist and Static x

Death/black metal= Toss up between Killswitch engaged and Cradle of filth

Pagan/folk metal= Amon Amath or Try or Manowar

Alternative= hangs down Pearl Jam. Every one knows if Eddy had shot himself there would be no Nirvana and Pearl Jam would have teh alternative/grunge kingship.

Punk= 4 skins or the clash or Sex pistols.

Techno= The headhunters or The Prophet

Lounge= Dean Martin

Blue= Muddy waters or Lightnin' Willey

Over all best band ever= METALICA.

My reasoning for this is Metalica godfathered the trash/old school metal sound. They have been around for ever 20 years. They are a heavy influence on just about every band.  Plus they can easily multi gener. James did a country song called momma said. Lars can drum any beat.  Plus you can hear the range of theire playing capabilities in every cd they put out.

I think it's pretty subjective. If you go by sales then we'd have instances where artists like Cyrus and Jonas brothers could be deemed great. I tend to think of great bands by their influence on their peers and subsequent generations of musicians,and longevity. Look at Eddie Van Halen. His influence on guitar players since his arrival on the scene is epic in scope. Either you tried to emulate him or you tried hard to sound nothing like him, in either case he was the yard stick you were measured by. The same could be said of the influence of Robert Johnson, Of Miles Davis, of John Coltrane, of Jimi Hendrix, or any number of artists.

I think the music we listened to as we were growing up/the music our parents listened to has a strong influence on our own tastes as well.

Now, I don't know anything about the greatest band ever, but the one that has and still continues to creep into my consciousness is Parliament-Funkadelic. You can put Public Enemy up there with them. That's just me though.

Ok Ellie, now I understand much much better. Although I always preferred Alice in Chains to Soundgarden, Badmotorfinger was great. And no please, don't go into local bands, nobody will know them, and nobody's gonna read your post until the end (I already noticed, not especially in this one, that people tend to read the beginning only, so imagine if they have no idea of what you're talking about...).

But I have to agree with many posts: it's our personal favorite band of all time, because it's obviously impossible to pick THE best band of all times, just because, and that's very fortunate, there is not only one style of music, and not an universal musical taste, even if we're massively overdosed everyday on Linkin Park, Rihanna, or Jay-Z.

And Judge_Holden, I can't say you're wrong, even if I don't share your tastes, but the music that my parents listened to (and still listen to actually) has nothing to do with what my musical tastes now, as well as what I was listening to when I was growing up.

So still, I'll keep Radiohead, for the same reasons as before, but, of course, I don't listen to them only. I also love Bjork!

Led Zeppelin, has influenced more artists than any other band. Not only they played great rock, they could also slip into any genre they wanted to play, (Blues, Reggea, Heavy Rock). Also, they are probably one the the few bands, to establish all great band members, only rivaling maybe the Beatles.

Taking into consideration, musical influence, amount of records sold, adaptation and survival through decades...I can only think of one band that would suit all of this: Pink Floyd!

I must agree with Butt_Ox here *sigh* But the rolling stones have sold more records than floyd, I prefer Floyd to the stones though. If you are going by longest lasting and records sold you would have to give U2 a shout aswell and lets be honest U2 are over rated pish.

 I say Metallica, 25 years in the business 12 albums just monumental accomplishments and they are in an unpopular genre which makes everything even harder and they manage to attract all ages and ppl from all types of music. I personally own all of they're albums
