This is an interesting and wide ranging argument. I did not listen to all of it. I seemed to drift in and out having heard much repeated and feel I would have heard more repeats. Hell, I do believe I may even inadvertently do so myself due to that fact. Something for which I truly apologize. But here are my thoughts. one. I believe the popularized phrase you were looking for Butt_Ox is this. "I'm not racist. I hate all you motherfuckers equally." two. I know I myself hope to have family, friends, perhaps children in this fair new country. Hell, I would wish this anywhere I were to live. For that matter I know most in our profession do. Isn't that the american dream? The three Fs. Fame, fortune, family. Of course these things will be noticed. Like deaths, marriages are posted in the papers, are seen by all. in many of the old countries it was necessary. Who is to say a Family can't in truth be that which it is called? Isn't that why they have been called that since the time of our grandfathers' grandfathers? Because....The most successful families embody the same ideals that bind the worthwhile "sanguinary" families together. Honor. Trust. Love for one's fellow. The willingness to stand beside them against all others. Otherwise our families fall apart and we all get picked off one by one. Some of your points are quite valid. However those at least I felt necessary to mention. Oh, and one last thing. About speaking like a Brit. Some o' us jus left the bloo'y boat ya bleatin wankah. So shove off eh? Jus' cause we're 'ere don' mean we was born 'n raised 'ere y'know. For some o' us 'tis jus' the way we speak....Y' ken? |

| Those traits that you mention are the reason a mafia family is referred to as a "family". My annoyance is in reference to those who will take it far beyond that. Of course, if a mafia family did not have those traits, there would be little reason to refer to them as a family, would there? However, some people get the analogy confused and begin to believe their HQs are 50-bedroom houses where the mobsters all tuck each other into bed at night (night-night kiss is optional). They see the Boss as a mother or father figure rather than a Boss. It is these sorts of beliefs and the actions that accompany them that make me wonder if they have the two different definitions of "family" confused. | |

| Some families have been run that way though. Hell, who would you trust more at your side than your own blood? Who would you want to see profit more? Your uncle or some random shmuck off the street? If a don or godfather chooses to spend his money housing his family...who am i to question? It would be better protection though. Having fifty trained guns in one mansion....plus the bodyguards? Let's not get ridiculous. No mafia family that I am aware of (and I know my mafia history) ran their family like a commune. Of course, if you want to get into unrealistic scenarios, it would be even more secure if the Boss were to house his family on the moon. And as far as having blood by your side, well then we are actually talking about family by consanguinity, not mafia families that people confuse with real family. You seemed to have missed the point. |

No. I got the point. I'm saying wouldnt it make sense to have your family by blood in your mafia family? Wouldnt there, at least to some extent, be siblings, uncles, fathers, aunts, mothers or whatever in? You know you can trust them. You want them to live the good life too. Thus it makes sense to bring them in. So maybe your Godfather is in all actuality your grandfather as well. Or maybe your Don could be your brother. You are saying people confuse the two and it is wrong. I am saying that logically the two would be quite frequently mingled. Maybe a little, maybe a lot. But the mingling would be there. To say it would not is kind of asinine and you seem to be much too intelligent to truly be so. It's kind of like the community comment. Of course there is a community in every city. We are not just businessmen. Our children go to school. We go to church. We get the groceries. We go to the movies or the opera. We interact other than in back alleys or smoke filled rooms. The fact certain members of a community choose not to join these community activities does not mean they do not or should not exist. To be basic...I do understand. I also disagree. You seem not to be seeing the difference though. Perhaps my responses have been muddled. I hope they are now clear. |

| I think you're trying to differentiat between a family and a gang. I think the mafia 'families' although sometimes had actual family members in them veer more on the side of being gangs. Gangs with a code and more loyalty etc. but still gangs; out to make a profit rather than cuddles and hugs and sports days. | |

That's part of my point, BF. Sure, the two relationships Lobo discussed are commingled, but that was not my point. I am talking about the larger picture, not isolated incidents where two mobsters in a family might be related by blood. No mafia family is going to be made up entirely of brothers, sisters, parents, grandparents, and cousins. Again, my point was that some people regard a family as being EXACTLY this sort of family - all blood relations. That is not what a mafia family is. "Family" is a metaphor, not to be taken literally. The people that annoy me take it literally. I hope I've made myself clear now. As far as the "community" term that is abused, people who use it are not referring to a group within a city. They are referring to the entire mafia and non-mafia - mobsters and civilians alike - that are spread across the country. (OOC: I fucking hate doing these side comments out of character, but apparently I must do it to make my point, as several people have questioned why "community" is so offensive. They are using the term to describe the "online community", which is an OOC concept. This is why I hate it.) |

People cross the country when someone joins the upper echelons, or when there is a high profile marriage. it has been done in the past. So in a sense there is a community. By definition a community is really at the basic anyone who deals with each other. But I weary of this conversation. I have...business...to attend to. Good day to you. |

My point was actually directed at Lobos anyway but I'll just explain why I was agreeing with you - what I said was 'although some of the families had actual family members in them yadayada something different.' meaning yeah there are family members but its not a family its a gang. Otherwise we would just be a big italian family deciding who's next to have the really big marriage in the street forum. You are right and I do agree, a bit of blood's involved but the main importance of blood is being italian or sicilian and as we're all being Made left right and center I guess we can assume thats a given | |

I have to say, in my opinion it's the Gods that decide what goes on in this world, not us. If they don't want people boasting about their leaders promotion then they will deal with it. I think its not our place to tell others how to use the resources layed before them- whatsmore I don't actually agree on half the points made here. Im keeping this short because one thing I dont like is a petty argument in the street... but my opinion is that I think picking how people refer to a gang/family (I dont really care) is by no means a reason to get angry about. |

With all due respect, I have sworn loyalty to a Crew Leader, a Godfather, but no one else. I try and help people out where I can and would never set out to go against someones wishes. Perhaps if I put it in the context it is in: I refered to what you are saying as resources, and you said it is your job to say how they are used. If someone doesn't use them this way then you will insult, or kill them. This ACTUALLY means that if I refer to this thing of ours as a community, then you have the right to kill me? Do you see where this is going? Like I said, without any disrespect I think your wrong. |

Starshine walks by a group of men goggling at a fistful of tattered pages. It seems to be a transcript from a speech made by Mr. Ox sometime back in April. Curiosity overwhelms her and she meanders over for a closer look. These men are arguing with the paper and scribbling down their comments on the yellowed sheets of parchment. She finds this so absurd that she can only shake her head and walk off towards the mental hospital down the street. |

Draven shakes her head and laughs. Regardless of age of this speech I must say I still get a giggle out of it. Butt Ox you really should come out into the streets to remind us more of how much you hate all of us. On a side note though, you speak the truth as you see it and that is something to be respected. I will say not everyone can do that but I am glad you do and can. She nods just before turning away and walking back through the crowd. |
