AMD over Intel? Started by: Tetley on Oct 15, '20 09:39

Is anyone else going with AMD for the next PC build or already switched over to AMD? and why?

My current machine is running out of storage on my game drive and I pre-ordered Watch_Dogs: Legion last year. I decided I wanted to move to a gen 4 PCIe m.2 drive and currently only AMD supports these but I wasn't convinced by the 3000 series. After watching the launch I decided to risk it and prepare for a 5900x when it launches the start of next month and ordered myself practically a whole new machine (Mobo, RAM, SSD, PSU, AIO watercooler).

I switched over to AMD. The main reason was do to the task I was doing and being honestly realistic. I mean price point was about buying point for me. I'm not 100% sold on the Ryzen 3 series but I will probably pick up one just. I'm not doing anything crazy out side of playing games but even then my games are extreme on graphics.

The way I see it, and have always seen it; Intel for work, AMD for heavy work.

No way, AMD were the best from 386 up until Intel brought out Core2Duo. AMD kinda stalled after the early Athlon's which were great. The early Opteron's where a real silicone lottery, some were great over clockers some could only squeeze out 200MHz boost.

Even 5000 series doesn't break 5GHz natively, yet.

When we decided on what line we will use for our new servers, we went AMD Epyc 7371's, it stood out as the absolute best performer for the money

My main workstation is dual E5-2680v2's

My much older secondary workstation is dual X5460's

My laptops/tablets are pretty much just low end "whatever was on sale" since they are used so infrequently.

Our last 2 iterations of servers were AMD, before that an Intel, before that another AMD, before that 2 bouts of Intel.

They seem to kind of to bounce back and forth over who is the lead at any given time while focusing on price/performance, mind you, in my use cases I look at overall total power, I don't do a lot of things which are limited to only one core at a time like a lot of gamers so your mileage may vary.

(But man, I would love to get my hands on a new Zen 3, but my dual E5-2680v2's has yet to bog down in any realistic situation that I use it for, so it will be a while before I upgrade and go the route of HEDT)

myself i hate intel so i would always amd over intel.

my computer at the moment is intel but i am going to rebuild soon to a amd set up because i hate intel

I still run an fx-8350 with 8 gig of ram, and is not the best machine, but runs game without too much strain on lower graphics settings,   I bought it as at the time was about £350 to build on the cheap, and added to it from there.    I want to upgrade but pretty much won't til my machine dies a little more as changing the case on it soon as all the USB ports are starting to die have problems after so many years and a bit of rust here and there.

I will probably go mid-range of the new ryzens as the truth is most PC's are upgrading faster than any game and i play games now even though the pc is a bit ancient.   The advantage of a disabled student grant is my plan.

Look, I am not trying to be an AMD fanboy, it all depends on what do you need it for. But I heard people saying "Absolute BEST Intel vs. Absolute BEST Amd > Intel should be around 10-15% stronger. This is what I heard.

But my logic is, do you really need that 10-15 if you play games, do some work and such? This 10-15 % only comes to play if you are using 100% CPU, all the time, every day.

But from performance + money AMD wins by a landslide. Even if they are 30% weaker, they are still 50% cheaper. But this was the case few years back, right now, I can guarantee that AMD is better in quality, price and performace.

It does depend on "What do you use it for" but I would go AMD any day.

Well I havent used Intel yet but my AMD PC has a overheating problem now with 2 years of use. But I think i did buy a PC that wasnt built that fine. Its an HP desktop. Now im planning on getting an all Intel Laptop.

Report Post Tip
Chomp often a new overheating problem can be attributed to insufficient cooling, such as one of your fans dying or dust/pet hair/whatever buildup causing lack of airflow or being able to dissipate heat from the heatsinks. Worth cracking open the case and seeing if everything is clean and everything spins ok.

Squishy I do think it had this problem when i bought it because it overheated a lot when it was brand new. I checked online and It said it could been the thing(Cant remember the name) used to install the processor. It's my fault for not checking properly! Now the PC when im playing some games crashes and it sounds like a jet inside :P. Not throwing crap at AMD I think they are really good and work great.

We're an AMD family here. The three gaming systems are AMD and the one being built will be AMD. I've always attributed AMD processors to be the ones you want when you want to do anything heavy duty especially when it comes to gaming.

Personally I have always used AMD mainly because it was a lot cheaper than the Intel varients, never had a problem with performance even with the older quadcores, still running an outdated now FX8350 8 core CPU still does the job, although the newer Ryzen cpu's have come a long way and are now leading the field, but as i say mine choice was mainly a financial one.

Past few laptops, over the last 10 to 12 years have been intel. With the last one serving me well for a laptop, had since 2013 and still doing alright. However recently I have gone back to a desktop pc and did a lot of homework before buying it. I found like many have said how much cheaper the Ryzens are and seem to be doing well.

I took the plunge and have no regrets. I can not justify how much more it costs to remain with intel at all just to have a slight increase in performance that I would not really notice. AMD for me too.

Report Post Tip

Well I think the whole "AMD is cheaper" is going out of the window as AMD are comparing the Ryzen 9 5900x to the i9 10900k which is available at £550 and the MSRP announced for the 5900x was $550 and chances are they'll match $ and £ prices because they know they can get away with it.

Report Post Tip

I do like that AMD is getting expensier, nothing like good competition. It brings us consumers great things. Imagine if there werent competitions between products, We would all be doing iphones, etc etc.

I bought a new pc a couple of months ago.  Made the decision to switch from Intel to Amd....now using a Ryzen 5 3600.  Still running with Nvidia GPU, though.  The reason for the decision?  Advice from Spacepole :/

I think the reasoning for this is because they now know they have a better product than Intel with the new Ryzen, where as before they were always playing catch up to Intel now it seems to be the other way around, problem is Intel rested on their laurels for too long and got complacent thinking they were too far ahead, that was until AMD dropped the the Ryzen.

Report Post Tip

Well is always 2 years of 1 side, 2 years of the other in the catchup battle,.    Truth is game specific what people are playing that which processor helps best.   We say how amd picked certaiin games to show 9/10 they were faster on when talking about the 5900x, the question is do you really need a 5900x?  and secondly, when you look below the new launch, the products are as many have said, generally cheaper.   I was tempted to go with a 3950X personally.

Report Post Tip

Well AMD's benchmarks showed common titles used by reviewers and didn't omit results that weren't in their favour which shows good openness from AMD.

I built my daughter a Ryzen 5 2600 build in 2018 because her CPU was bottlenecking the Strix GTX 1070 OC I gave her for Christmas and she's not had any issues with it.
