Opening Note from the Editor

Well, Issue Five is here. And I'm writing this last. Phew, what a long one. (That's what she said). No, let's get busy. (That's what she...) No. Shut up. This is hard and I just want to get it over with. (That's what-). Okay, let's just get started.

If you support this paper, please share that sentiment in the streets. Not only does it provide motivation for our staff to write, but word of mouth also helps us attract a larger audience. 

Crewleaders Meet, News Hits the Street

So there are two things I'm going tobe  super honest and upfront about right now: 

1) This is a very important, relatively short speech from Slash about many issues essential to our world. You should really just read it yourself. I don't always say that. Because otherwise I'd have a shit paper. That being said, I encourage it for this one.

2) I already wrote this article and then my assistants Karl and Fritz got too sloshed and destroyed it. So I'm going to try something new here.

Without further adieu, I now present: interpretations of Slash's message to the community in haiku form.

New auths in the Midwest

Perhaps motivated by the recent message from the gods to help provide shelter to those who arrive in our world, within 24 hours of each other Detroit and Chicago both moved to authorize new crewleaders to set up operations.

First, MavisBeacon was authed in the district of Corktown, DT, returning the presence of our society there. Purchasing a headquarters building at 1471 Michigan Avenue, this new crew willl be known as "The 1471 Gang". MikhailKomarov exoressed his opinion to Mavis Beacon's previous boss that "this may be a dark day due to losing one of your most loyal members, but this is the best person for the expansion of Detroit". Sources can confirm that this previous boss concurs entirely with Mikhail's assessment.

The next day, Bonkers opened up the doors of a building in the South Side of Chicago that some town planners reportedly called "a purple and yellow monstrosity". Bonkers stated that "While we will be true to the traditions of La Cosa Nostra, we will also, hopefully, bring something a little different." Utopia offered the comment that "In a district full of hard workers, you have all ways been right up there at the top and I am delighted to see you get this opportunity that you deserve."

Best of luck to these two new crewleaders as they seek to make their way in the world.

Joke:

A Godfather-Chairman and his lawyer enter a room to meet with the former accountant of the family. The GFC asks "Where's the 20 million you embezzled from me?"

The accountant doesn't answer, so the Godfather angrily asks again. The Godfather's lawyer interrupts, saying "Godfather, the man is a deaf mute and can't understand you, but I know sign language and can interpret for you." The Godfather angrily yells "Ask him where my fucking money is!"

The lawyer uses sign language to ask the question and the accountant signs back "I don't know". The lawyer relays this to the Godfather, who pulls out his pistol and holds it to the accountant's head. As the Godfather holds the gun he snarls "Ask him again and tell him I'm going to blow his fucking brains out out if he doesn't tell me."

After signing the question again, the accountant frantically signs back "It's out back, buried under the shed!"

The lawyer interprets to the Godfather, saying "He says to go fuck yourself and that you don't have the balls to pull the trigger."

Kudos to a discussion by Space-pole- and an Acknowledgement

A few days ago, Space-pole came to the streets and directly addressed the current batch of crewleaders, stating "For me, there are many questions from the last regime that haven't been addressed by the new leaders of this world. I'm almost certain that talks behind closed doors must have taken place, as someone who likes to understand logistics it would be nice to have some kind of clarification on who this world will be re-shaped. I cant help but feel like we have buried our heads in the sand, hoping that someone else will step up and take charge."

Many of these issues by Space-pole were addressed in our top story: the notes of the crewleaders' meeting by Slash, so I don't feel the need to comment on the specific points raised in this discussion.

I do, however, want to comment on the larger issue raised by LuciusSweet and Space-pole: the silence of leaders in the immediate aftermath of the death of the pillars regarding important matters in our society. I can only speak for myself here, of course, and not any other leaders.

Space-pole and LuciusSweet, essentially, you are correct. In retrospect, I regret my silence to the larger community. I could offer excuses or explanations, but they'd be tuned out- and rightfully so. I believe that crewleaders have a responsibility to the greater society as well as their own family, and in that sense I failed as a leader on that occasion. Those who know me are aware that I have a great passion and esteem for our streets, and I do not intend to repeat this error.

The Value of a Godfather

Chthonian came to the streets to discuss the topic of godfathers, asking whether "there is a need for there to be standards besides luck to be placed here", questioning whether "we lack any care about them... What they truly do? Is this just a free run for people to do absolutely nothing?"

Space-pole contributed early. Cthonian had talked about people hitting standards before rank, and Space-pole seemingly questioned why the order mattered, stating "So knowing what the position does for you and how people respond to it surely it would make much more sense to take it and then achieve the higher standards that you want."

BobbyMunson seemed to entirely reject both the idea of higher standards for Godfathers and  the concept of discussing the matter in the streets, saying "A Godfather doesn't have to care about the greater community, nor does any leader truthfully. We are criminals. We don't hand hold the rest of the county, that's not how any of this works. We are here to help our own and make as much money as we can while keeping our own safe and becoming as powerful as we can...So you're wanting these people to come out and do something for the community, I'm asking what are you going to provide them that benefits them in doing this? "

Cthonian and BobbyMunson continued their debate, ultimately disagreeing over whether total "freedom of speech" should be a value for our society and/or how many conditions apply. 

Space-pole then re-entered the discussion, disagreeing with a few of BobbyMunson's points before adding "Im so lost on your logic on communicating with upper structures of this world. I just dont get it! We need to breed behaviors that do question the norm, behaviors that allow for crew leaders to be put to task, like i am to you now. I have conviction in what im saying to you, like my line always has. I have never been so flummoxed as to your logic here."

BobbyMunson then connected this valuing of free speech with the entitlement found in many associates, explaining that "I firmly believe that allowing anyone and everyone to question whoever the hell they want breeds disloyalty and poor members. We now see an influx of people wanting to become associates and they have the nerve to ask leaders what they can offer them? What can I offer you? A place to lay your head at night so you don't get shot."

After further responses by Space-pole and Cthonian, BobbyMunson exited the conversation, leaving the following parting words of "I'm sorry I've triggered you two, I will go do my own thing now and leave you to your safe space. Enjoy. I'll send someone by for hugs and flowers for all later."

BrotherHec gave a rather lengthy response to the question at hand, which led to Chthonian to accuse him of muddying the waters by not focusing on the issues at hand. This resulted in another speech by BrotherHec that has not yet been responded to by Cthonian.

Slash then entered the conversation and gave a response that attempted to confront the many points raised in the already long debate. Honestly, it's pretty tough for me to recap this one due to the sheer length. But a few highlights: he disagreed with Chthonian on many issues and statements; disagreed with BobbyMunson on some things, but acknowledged that Mr. Munson could run his family however he wishes- and acknowledged his right to exit the conversation; and then concluded with a couple comments toward BrotherHec. 

This discussion, it seems, is still ongoing, so I will refrain from further comment and instead encourage people to contribute to it HERE

Kate's Corner: In Which She Stands On A Metaphorical Soapbox and Complains

This issue, we're inspired by a discussion that TammyDeLuca started in the streets.

What's with all these absentee business owners? I consistently see people starting up businesses, perhaps just seeking the experience of prestige of opening one, who then never return even as customers line up to visit. Or if they do return, it's a couple days after someone was hoping to meet with them. Perhaps there are steps that the community or the gods could take to enforce this, although enforcement could certainly become an issue.

For now, I'm just content to stand on this soapbox and ask anyone creating a business to put in some effort to maintain a presence there- or at least to make sure that someone else is. But I'll be pondering changes in the process that could benefit the community.

Ask Kate

Dear Kate,

Since your last article has been released, there has improvements to provide publicly available information regarding protection orders to mafioso across the nation. I appreciate the specifics that it will be holding, such as specific protection start and end times, and can only hope that it will be utilized with high level of details if and when it's needed to.

My question is, how should a practicing hitman handle situations where not all details are in place?
Are you aware of any discussions that outline specific details? Should activity... or lack of activity effect who is or isn't protected?
Will using of this resource actually specify specific dates/times... meaning, November 17th, 17:26  versus the vague "Protected for 7 days" that we sometimes hear.

Dear Reluctant to Shoot,

A good question. The simple and, in my opinion best, answer is that you always err on the side of caution. Taking an errant shot can cost you- sometimes your life, depending on the target and the leaders involved. Sources tell me that this was discussed in the recent crewleader meeting without any sort of ironclad agreement. Perhaps the next meeting will provide more specific guidelines as to the questions of how activity levels, tags, and precise timing should be interpreted when they aren't specifically mentioned. But again, you need to ask yourself before you pull the trigger whether you're ready to live with the consequences of potentially breaking that protection order. When is it worth it? In my opinion, never.

Upon hearing all her friends requests for the newest issue, alessandra headed out and collected one for everyone including herself. She returned soon after, sat down with the rest of them and turned the pages to read more about the happenings these past few days. 

"We can giggle about your funny encounters another time over some coffee. Let me just read this dammit!" She turned to BunBun and hit him playfully in the shoulder. He laughs, his deep chuckle lifting the spirit of the room. 

alessandra rolled her eyes and resumed to reading the opening note. She couldn't but smile at KateLogan's wordplay. Her eyes traveled lower on the page, and started reading about the street discussions. Indeed, there had been quite a few issues and topics addressed that sparked a lot of responses. alessandra knew there was more to know. She would be reading more about it tonight - plus a little insight don't hurt nobody. alessandra thought about sending KateLogan a telegram.

Before going over to the local post office, alessandra read through what she wrote. 

KateLogan, I respect you in this thing of ours and for everything that you're doing for the community as a CL and dear friend to many. I hope that you will continue with this review because this is the realest shit ever, pardon my language madam. You got a wonderful team of writers in your hands too. Not only people are able to read what they missed out on, but be provided some form of entertainment too. Have yourself a good day signora!

She pushed the stack of papers off her desk and into the garbage can. "I get, Kate! You want me to read your damn paper!" she yelled to her boss. "hint taken!" she added before picking up the paper and starting to read. Once she was done she got up and set the copy on her bosses desk. "Nicely done, although there was a disturbing lack of me mentioned." she told her friend with a grin before skipping out of the office before she could be hit. 

Another amazing issue! 

I must say, I never expected my name to be uttered by someone of such stature.  
Furthermore, I am glad people have enjoyed my stories and I will continue to bring more for the people of these streets. 

If I can provide another form of entertainment for those who seek to escape their troubles, albeit temporarily, then I am honored to do so. 

Thank you for this brilliant issue and I look forward to your future issues with great anticipation, for I love the recognition your new segment brings to those who share their words on the streets as well as how it will encourage people to continue and do better to provide a service to those who roam searching for something to pass the time.

Kate, another great read - thank you! The time and effort you dedicate to doing this is inspirational and impressive. I know my guys read this each week and love the summary of events it provides them from a neutral point of view. I am loving the addition of a joke in this issue too!

Please never stop - this really adds value to the streets and the community as a whole!

Thomas read over the paper, catching his name. He cringed. He should try and remain -out- of the media. At least this one was written by his boss for those in the business. A kind of, Mafia Media. Mafedia? Naaah. He sat the paper down beside his breakfast and made a mental note to remind Kate that her paper was a HUGE success and a great boon to the organized crime community.

Billie snatched up the paper as she joined Thomas for breakfast... She made waffles! Reclining with her morning cigarette and a glass of orange juice, she crossed her legs and began to skim this newest edition. "He-heeey!" she perked up a bit, spine straightening as she reached the Review Rundown. "Tommy, look. I'm a 'fixture'! How do you like them apples?" She smiled and did her best impersonation of an Irish jig... sitting. Tossing the paper into a spare chair, she dug into her peanutbutter and syrup drench waffle with a childlike smile. "Wamind me da..." she mumbled through a mouth full of breakfast. Pausing she swallowed and gulped down a healthy swallow of juice, before clearing her throat and continuing, "Remind me to tell Kate what a great job she's done. This is really top notch stuff." She smirked at him across the table, "Maybe we should send her some flowers...." 

Thomas chuckled as he took a sip of coffee, almost spitting it out.

"Nae lass, am sure Kate's had enough o' flowers. Sing 'er a song or somethin'."

Billie cleared her throat and put on her best showgirl face... 

♫ "OH Kaaate... she is so greeeat.

    There are but feeew... who don't love her reveeeeiw.

    Those that dooo... they envy our creeeew...

    So much sooo... they spend massive dooough....

    To send her roooooses... and...." ♫

Billie trailed off for a moment, totally lost as to where to take the next verse.  

♫ "AND STROKE THEIR HOOOOSES!" ♫

She cackled aloud, nearly falling out of her chair. Her messy bed-head frizz bobbing and swaying with the heaving of her chest. She looked at Tommy across the table, trying to maintain her composure long enough to take another sip of orange juice. She failed miserably and the two collapsed into a giggling fit yet again. When she finally regained her self-control, she hoisted her glass int he air and toasted - for the third time in as many days - "To Kate fucking Logan!"

Thomas blinked, pretty much speechless. Billie had an AMAZING voi... hoses? MY GOD!

He rolled out of his chair laughing. Once the two had regained their composure and Billie toasted Kate, he reiterated.

"Ta Kate FOCKIN' Logan!"

Twink watched as PaleRider walked into the dining room at HQ, intently reading something and quietly chuckling under his breath.  Being the nosy impertinent scamp that she is, she immediately grabbed the paper from him and started reading on the spot.  While PaleRider rolled his eyes indulgently and walked over to the buffet to fix himself a plate, Twink just stood there absorbing the news that seemed to be laid out concisely and impartially. 

"Hey, I heard about that..." she muttered under her breath.  She kept scanning as more folks began to trickle in, attracted by the smell of breakfast.  "Oh, wow, I wasn't really sure about that one..."

Finally, Twink sat at the massive table, finished reading every word and gave PaleRider his paper back.  "That Ms. Logan can sure write a great paper.  It's all there in black and white and yellow! what? wait...  never mind, that's mustard... I should drop her a line."

Ms. Logan, another fine example of great journalism with a hint of humor (who doesn't love lawyer jokes, right?), a smidge of advice, and a sprinkle of competition (I loved the new section but especially loved the fact that you don't point mean dirty fingers at those who do not express themselves often on the streets!).  Keep up the fine work and I look forward to getting the next edition...  or I should say PaleRider's next edition... Well, maybe I should just buy my own next time!"  sigh

Ms. Logan, I've said it from the beginning that you have a true gift in writing. Every issue you have written so far has been fantastic, and I hope you keep these issues coming.

Still trying to catch the life style of the Mafias, Shadow stumbled upon an Article titled ' The Logan's review by KateLogan' as he was roaming around the streets corners for some quick petty bucks. He was thrilled to find the high level of organization of their daily activities. He particularly was impressed by the art of finesse displayed by Ms Logan as a paper journalist. He hadn't expected to find much around as he always wondered what truly is the driving force behind the Mafiadom. He immediately decided that the Logan's editions would be a must read for him to have first hand information around as it had answered the questions bugging his mind.

A note goes out to those that Kate had heard expressed public support.

Kerouac - I'm happy to listen to your specific ideas regarding both content and lay-out. Please feel free to either respond to me here on this street corner or send a letter to me privately.

To be perfectly honest with you, I agree with your comparison regarding the papers of yore. I do my best, but I'm not so egotistical that I think my efforts are the best ever, or even close. But this is an endeavor I wanted to try despite my lack of experience and, at least during my lifetime and the relatively recent past, I just haven't seen a consistent newspaper. So I wanted to try my hand at it.

Based on the impressions my ancestors gave in their journals, I see myself as an enthusiastic dilettante who's giving it her best effort. I have, up until now, refrained from reading previous editions of other newspapers. While this could be a great way for me to help improve, I was also hesitant: even subconsciously, I didn't want to rip anyone off and be accused of plagiarizing the ideas of others. If you think there are any specific examples that would help me in my quest to improve, though, please let me know or forward them to me.
