what i fail to see is what your issue here is?

If you call that member whoring then you have a rude awakening heading your way. Your definition of "member whoring" is quite messed up if you ask me.

If you dont like a specific family then move on to others jobs or you can choose to go old school and shut your jobs off all together and approach the leader of your choice

"Member Whoring" is NOT a half-ass job board entry. Member whoring is when you don't even speak to people or say the minimum required in the recruiting process. In the past this has included sending invites out without even speaking to the potential member. It has also included exchanges similar to the following examples:

Recruiter: Hey, wanna join our crew?

New Person: Sure

Recruiter sends invite.

New Person: kin i join ur kru

Recruiter: Sure

Recruiter sends invite

Member whoring has several definitions, laziness in regards to a job board is not one of them. For all you know they could have been running a contest for the job board and it hasn't ended yet.

Below is some further reading in regards to past examples and discussions of member whoring:

I hope that helps you understand exactly what "Member Whoring" is.

Not for nothing but those aren't really great examples of member whoring.  Looks like shitting recruiting, but member whoring back when I started was unsolicited invites without any conversation whatsoever.  There were CLs that would fire off invites to new names on the list hoping to get new members, usually in hopes they would go IA so they could train their gun on them (kills werent as pitifully easy to come by back then as it is now).  So yes while that job board is definitely shit and the examples you gave aren't very impressive means of recruiting either, I think the term "Member whoring" is a commonly misued term nowadays, much like "bloodline hunting"

Let's all be honest here... It's blatantly obvious that it is not member whoring. Let's not carry on down that route, it's just a wrong choice of words for a point trying to be made and hell, it probably worked in getting peoples attention... it certainly got mine.

So no, not member whoring. But ridiculous? I think yes.

The jobs board, whether or not people like it, can be an excellent and powerful tool in recruiting fantastic new players. Only when it is used properly and to it's fullest potential. The last time I played properly I lose count of the amount of decent new players I had recruited purely through the fact of having a well written and well thought out jobs board of at least 7 or more jobs. I had a lot of people tell me about how my jobs had attracted them more than others just down to the sheer fact that there was effort put in, it was more interesting to read and it was more engaging than what others had lazily written, indeed things like "TBC" or "Coming soon...". Come on... that is pretty ridiculous when you think about it. I'm not gonna comment on specific names or people because there is no point, it isn't an isolated kinda deal.

Usually when a crewleader is being authed and setting up, unless as a war auth or rushed through due to a horrific wack back or Durden revenge (lols), they are told with in plenty of time to get their RH and LH ready and get the cash together etc. This time to me is the most important time to set yourself up to have a smooth running and easy process in to boldness. This is the time when everything should be prepared. When your funds should be collected, your hands notified and work delegated between the leader and their hands. Who is writing what HQ thread, who is hashing out templates for hitsquads and WS collecting, and indeed who will be writing out the role plays for the jobs boards.

People are so easy to forget the whole reason the job boards were brought in in the first place. To try to ease the horrific amount of member whoring that was going on at the time and I have to say, it really did work. Obviously member whoring wasn't eradicated completely but it definitely put a massive dent in the practice. People used to always moan about how wrong it was for crewleader and hands to approach new players about joining a crew, even when it was done in the most fantastic and well thought out role play possible but obviously more so with the kind of horrid messages that someone mentioned above. So yeah, it worked. We could not only no longer see new members on the 60 second list but it also gave a fantastic basis of role play to work from when members had completed new jobs and made available for our crewleaders, hands and sponsors to message and talk about committing to the crew. The role play was already done, the new member already had a taste of what to expect! The member whoring was dying out.

Let's look at it from a new perspective though with un-used and lazy job boards... Using what was said above about what was written on someones job boards (I forget names and can't be bothered to go back to page 1, hell i'm too inactive to care who people are these days anyway!) I think it was something like this...

Job 1 - "Coming soon"

Job 2 - "Coming soon part two"

Job 3 - "part two coming soon"

Or something like that. So, a new member does a job and see's the message "Coming soon" then goes about their business. Then s/he does another job and can see the message now says "Coming soon part two" and then goes about their business again. Then they come back to do their last job and can see the message "Part two coming soon" but then, they have passed the threshold. All the available sponsors online for that crew at that time get a lovely notification stating someone had completed their jobs and as they should, they message this new person about joining. Now, I had to guess but I would imagine this message is something like "Hey, I see you've done all our jobs for the crew... wanna join?". That, my friends is no better than member whoring. There has been no effort at all in the recruitment process and the first real contact that a new member has had with someone on this game is a simple sentence or two about joining the crew. To me there is no difference in that to the member whoring of old when people would act like vultures to new names on the 60 second list and send a random invite. Hell, sometimes I would be surprised if some people notice that a new player has completed their job board and an invite is sent immediately.

There has always been a fine line between what can be considered member whoring and what can not. To me, and I believe to the wider membership base, gaining members with little to no actual effort is member whoring.

There is one sure fire way to get decent, hard working new players in to this game and retain them. Keeping them coming back for more! That is by showing and making an effort from the very first instance and making great first impressions.

A new person won't stick around or make an effort for anyone if seasoned, decent players... especially those in a position of power, don't make an effort for them.

PJ is correct that it can work to great effect. In fact, I recall a time in the past when he and I were both leaders and my own wife chose to join PJ due to the recruitment work she did as she enjoyed it so much.

The efforts described above are pathetic in truth. I would be ashamed if I had been involved in such a poor show.
